Hi

As the distance between them doesn’t seem as long (as for example Port Canaveral to Nassau)… does the ship stays still during some hours in the night so that it can dock in daylight?

Thanks

73 miles for Nassau to Castaway Cay. So they can go slow. Never made that trip, so don't know if they stop.

The ship never comes to a complete stop. She needs to be on the move for a number of the ship's facilities to operate correctly. However she is capable of moving very slowly and sometimes they just make a big circles. This is true not just at night but with days at sea where the ship isn’t traveling very far. The captain will do his best to look for good weather and calm seas

They even take you out of port on back to back CC visits. In February with the Fantasy we moved the whole night between visits.

It’s a gentle movement. I imagine guests in verandah cabins, where you can try to peer into the darkness, might be more aware due to seeing the ripples created in the water.

The ship will never stay still in open water unless for an emergency. They need to move for the water collection system and other systems to work. They do not want the grey water they discharge to be collected by the ship’s water treatment plant. Movement also limits the impact of the ship’s fumes on the guests and the ship.

This might be true for older ships, but the newer ships have pretty good greywater treatment on board. They can stand still pretty much all day in ports and did so for a big part of the two lockdown years.

But like all large means of transportation, stopping and starting can take a big toll on the mechanical systems and fuel consumption. It's also easier to navigate a moving ship in open waters - and on a shorter notice.

Staying still in port is different since their are also dockside systems. If you payed attention to ships during the lockdown, most ships went out 1/week to dump grey water and collect fresh water for osmosis.

Yep, They not only dump grey water, but everything that goes through the macerator. Very different than my Navy days years ago, when we emptied the garbage cans right over the fantail. To quote the Boatswain Mate, "The fantail is now open"... They do fill the fresh water tanks when they are in port at many locations. That's the blue hose snaking around on the pier.

Yes, they do have to move out of the territorial waters to discharge. Very few states would allow without a whole barrage of compliance rules to be followed.

I was surprised when we left CC on a double dip cruise. We skipped Nassau due to COVID and went to CC on back-to-back days. For a variety of reasons involving on-board shops and on-island bugs, we left port in the evening, sailed wide, slow, circles over night, and returned in the morning.

I’ve heard the bugs are crazy at night at CC????

You brought back some memories there with the trash over the fantail. I also remember being in Naples harbor and the the amount of garbage floating on the surface. The evaporators were definitely not running there. I digress. Smoking lamp is lit throughout the ship.

On a sea day in the Mediterranean Captain announced the day was so perfect he was shutting down all but 1 generator and we would just drift for the day, it was one of the best sea days ever !
