Curious about Why MS has to check on availability

A few times when making reservations with MS to stay at one of the DVC properties...when checking availability...sometimes MS can tell me right away...and sometimes they say....their might be availability, but they have to check....they put you on hold...and a couple of minutes later they come back to say yea or nay (actually...each time this has happened to me they came up with a room).

So...if the inventory is real time...how come they have to do this hold and call?.....

I'm not complaining or anything..just curious if anyone has ever asked...

This seems to happen at times when the resort is close to being full and/or when a reservation is made within 30 days.

I was just able to add NYE to our previous HH reservation that was supposed to begin on New Year's Day -- just called for it last week. I'm thinking this might have been a "cash" room, but within such a short amount of time, they can sometimes switch it to points? Not sure -- just glad that I was able to get it!

Must be that the resort was close to being full as my reservation was for July 2003...but still...if a room is available..howcome it's not in the computer inventory....oh well...I'm glad I got it for sure...

Here is my speculation, based on my experience with the same situation and some of the comments MS has made to me during the process. There are different "inventories" - points and cash. While a certain % of rooms (3%?) may be dedicated to cash reservations, it may be possible that the cash inventory has more rooms than that at times. MS may have the ability to move inventory under certain circumstances. To do so they may have to get approval - hence the "wait".

I think in some cases they break up the non-dedicated 2 BR into studios and 1-BR. I also wonder if they move rooms from a cash inventory when it appears the room will just sit empty.

Could it be that MS is checking the waitlist to see if someone is already waitlisted for those days? If MS checks availability and the resort is only showing a few rooms on a certain day maybe they have to check the waitlist first to make sure they don't give you a room that someone has been waiting for.
