Both of her parents are alive although she is sent away from them until her 16 th birthday.

Yeah, quite a few have both parents alive, but are separated from them (Aurora, Rapunzel, Hercules).

I've read in a couple of sources that it has something to due to the fact that Disney felt himself responsible for his own mother's death. After he started to make it big he bought a new house for his parents. Apparently there was an issue with the gas lines and his mother died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Walt felt responsible. I've heard that may be why so many characters in the early films had no mother to speak of.
