Curious about Asian workers at US/IOA

I was told when I was there last week that 500 Asian students had arrived recently to work. I arrived very early every morning at the parks. The turnstyle lady was very friendly and told me that she was only a temporary worker. She works every day for two weeks at the parks for Spring Break, this is her 6th year. She told me that she doesn't get paid very much, but that she does get a GREAT perk. She receives 4 Universal passes that expires in 30 years. I didn't know if anyone would be interested in the Orlando area. She also said they hire temps for Halloween and Christmas.

I am of Chinese descent and my Chinese (american born) friend informed me probably about 10 - 12 years ago that "oriental" was not PC, so I now use "asian". I don't get offended when someone uses "oriental", especially if the person is more elderly and just accustomed to using that word.

Personally, I have no problems with english or non-english speaking people IF THEY ARE PLEASANT and have a smile on their face. I will be patient with them if they are having trouble understanding me. (BTW, I have such trouble understanding other Chinese people's accent, but DH who is ofIrish/German/French descent (I kid him about being a mutt) can understand them with no problem!)

Let's be tolerant of each other, and of each other's posts. Most people don't been to offend anyone, they are just sharing their thoughts because the disboards is a warm and inviting place to do that.

I hadn't noticed this until after reading this post. Then I hit the language barrier yesterday; I was asking for something I had left w/the ride operators (too large for the lockers), and the Asian worker had no clue what I was saying. Three times she tried to load me with handicapped groups of riders and shrugged when I tried to explain! I finally managed to find someone who spoke English after several minutes/ride cycles. I'm surprised that they don't ensure that the interns have a certain level of English skill before putting them in certain positions.

In general, I enjoy meeting workers from around the world. We do a LOT of Disney cruises, and that's one of my favorite parts. After 56 sailings, we've made friends from Croatia to Australia to India to the Philippines.

Wow, even though I asked a simple question due to my curiosity I still get flamed... I did not mean to offend anyone and certainly was not aware that I could not call people oriental ... live and learn though... My question was just because I felt it was unusual that 99% of the ride attendants were ASIAN....that was not my experience on my previous visit.

As one of the posters who posted a response to the Asian/Oriental issue, I wasn't flaming you. All I was doing was pointing out the difference in the useages of the words. Since you posted as "Asian/Oriental", I felt you weren't sure on which word to use, so I was giving clarification.

Sorry if you were offended.

Thanks... I have to say that all the people at US/IOA were really nice to us... and that is why we keep going back....
