These new cup cake makers that are in the store now. Has anyone ever used one? How are they better than just a muffin tin and popping it in the oven?

I've seen them along with the donut maker and the cake pop maker. I've thought about getting my DD one for Christmas but would it turn out to be just another gadget gathering dust?

Do they require special mixes or would regular cake mixes do?

Had to have that last year !! Had to have it ! finally bought for DD and myself for christmas and used it twice .. sitting in the garage...dust collector... I could see buying the one that makes dounuts or cake pops .. but not the regular cupcake one...The problem is you have to stand there and monitor til the cupcake is done.. several times because if you use a box of cake mix it makes several batches.. just esier to throw them all in the muffin tins and put in oven you only have to watch once.

Just want to throw out here that we have the Sunbeam Donut Maker (purchased at Target a year ago) & we love it. It makes terrific donuts!

* It does not require special mixes. It comes with a little recipe book & you just use basic ingredients. The recipe we use all the time just uses flour & a few other things to make basic donuts. Then we sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar. YUM!

I bought one of these for my DS as a gift just last night. I would love to hear what your favorite donut recipes have turned out to be!

I must've been editing my post to add another line, while you were typing. We have just made the basic recipe on page 7 of the manual. Uses:
flour
sugar
baking powder
melted butter
milk
egg

The manual includes 5 donut recipes & several icing recipes.

Funny I was thinking about getting one for my DD and myself but the more I look at them the more I think its not worth it...

I got both the donut and the cupcake maker last Christmas. I think we used them twice maybe. It's a waste of time, money and effort.

DD11 got one last year. She has used it to make choc chip muffins, chocolate cupcakes, mini brownies, etc. She would probably use it more but I think it's a pain. I end up standing there watching & making sure they get out on time for several batches.

We have done homemade batter and mixes, both turn out fine but I don't think they taste as good as regular cooking.

Yes, muffin tins & the oven are easier but DD loves that it's hers and she loves all things mini.

My sister got one for her birthday, and she really loves it. She's used it a few times so far, and it's worked really well. My other sister gave one to each of her best friends for their sweet 16s, and I think they really like using them, too.

I was thinking that was the case.

I may look into the donut one then. She bought herself a waffle maker, the kind that flips over, here recently.

DH bought me the Emeril Mini Pie and Cake Maker for my birthday. We love it. It sits out on the counter and I have pie filling (meat and dessert), cake mix (mixed up and ready) and homemade pie crust in my refrigerator. Anytime we feel like pie or cupcakes, we just pop it in the pie and cake maker and have instant dessert or chicken pot pies. It's great. DD brought her boyfriend over last minute for supper last night and I didn't have to worry about fixing dessert. Plus, she doesn't like pie and he doesn't like cake so they could each have what they wanted.
