Cultural differences?

The baby's right to eat trumps any adult's discomfort. There is no reason why a woman should be expected to express breastmilk and use bottles, unless that's what she wants to do. It's a huge hassle, and mothers of infants usually have enough to worry about. If you don't like it, don't look.

And I'll readily admit that being around nursing women makes me uncomfortable, but I'm the adult, so I just deal with it.

Okay, I am loooking for posters here would deny that a woman of childbearing ages breasts do have a heck of a lot of sexual value and significance.... Anybody...... ?????

I couldn´t have said it better. Why should a mother have to take her breastmilk in a bottle instead of the original packing when in public?
That's one of the great things about breastfeeding...the food comes pre-packaged, convenient and ready to go, perfect temp and as fresh as you can get.

Is the article ABOUT breastfeeding? :confused3

Absolutely true!!!! :thumbsup2

In cultures/places, such as tribes in Africa, women go around with nothing on, letting their breasts hang down to their knees.... That is just how it is there.

I see NO reason for the OP to have even posted this thread other than to stir the pot and to pass some kind of negative judgement on our cultural values.

A good percentage of American women breastfeed...
I have NO problem with that whatsoever.
My sister is well endowed, and breastfed all three of her children. Her and her husband took to calling her the "Dairy Queen" (for those overseas who may not know, this is a big chain that serves ice-cream and milkshakes, etc...) I have NO problem with breastfeeding whatsoever.

I take offense if anyone wants to falsely accuse me of being uncomfortable with breastfeeding, when we all know it is God-intended, just because I don't think it is appropriate to have a full blown life size close-up of an engorged nipple displayed right in front of my face. :sad2:

I take offense if anyone wants falsely accuse me of passing negative judgements of their cultural values. With that being said, I can not agree on your values being "our" values, as you put it.

I think it's about a baby boom among lesbians.
That what I thought too.

BTW I don't find the photo offensive. I actually saw the cute baby and then said oh there is a breast too. No big deal. Now I am not sure why the breast needed to be there. It really did not add anything that I can see. I am fine with breastfeeding of infants in public but the older kids can wait and not latch on while eating thier burger etc.

Europeans are not as prudish as Americans when it comes to exposing the body. To them it's "just another breast". :confused3 To us it's "OH MY GAWD A BEWB!" :scared1:

I have lived here almost 3 years and I have not seen one breastfeeding woman (and I go downtown Mon-Fri where there is a park with many infants in strollers). Italian women do like showing off cleavage with low cut blouses and there are some designated locations for nude beaches, but something tells me that maybe (at least for my area), breastfeeding is considered a private thing and not to be viewed by others. I will have to ask my Italian friend why I have never seen a woman breastfeed in public.

Obviously just a guess, but I can imagine the photographer thinking it would give context to when the picture was taken. Obviously the picture was not taken to be sexual or they would have left out the baby.

Sorry Freyja, you can backtrack all you want.
But I have seen enough of the "repressed or prudish Americans" comments to see judment calls and pot stirring when I see it.

And, yes when you say 'cultural difference' it IS indeed generalizing each culture as a whole.

I am not the one who has generalized and drawn those lines... you were.

As far as I know the percentage of breastfeeding Italian women is not very high, the same actually goes for spanish women. Don´t know why, but problems with breastfeeding in public (possibly linked to catholism) migh be one of the reasons.

I think that you are very wrong in that assumption.

1. Anything to get attention and make a sale!!!

2. How is the addition of that nipple valid to that story??? It was not about breast feeding.

3. I maintain that nobody here will post that they do not see the sexual value and significance to a woman's breast/nipple. So, how could the 'sexual' aspect be completely unseen or ignored.

Really? That's interesting. I wonder if it has to do with the sexual objectification of women in those cultures?

I was not offended, but then again, I BFed my younger daughter for over 4 years. In public. With no covering. I once pulled out a breast in the airport while waiting for my sister to get her luggage and there was nowhere to sit so I just walked around with a latched on baby and exposed belly.

I couldn´t have said it better. Why should a mother have to take her breastmilk in a bottle instead of the original packing when in public? But I guess that´s the answer to the original questions. Yep, cultural differences.

This American never did. My mother never did either, she nursed all 9 of her kids, back when Americans really were really repressed about such things.

That said, I never felt the need to expose myself to the general public while nursing. When out and about in the general public I always found a quiet place to nurse my kids, usually under a blanket. Nor have I ever seen any woman do this. I've read about it on the DIS, but I think in general, we Americans tend to keep our breasts covered while nursing. Is that not the case in your country OP? Just curious. It certainly wouldn't offend me if I did witness such a thing, nor did the picture that made headlines.

Well, first of all there are more things that could be taken into consideration than just cultural differences. It could for example also be religious differences. Do I think Americans, as a nation in genera,l are prudish compared to my culture (which by the way is not Danish), yes I do. Does that mean that I think any less of them? ABSOLOUTLY not. Do I in general like Americans? Very much so. Would I like to live for a couple of years in the States? Probably.
As someone said earlier, it´s not about who´s better or who´s worse. It´s just different. I can by no means see why those differences can not be discussed and debated.

To me a photo(s) of a lesbian couple(s) with a baby and older children would be more appropriate for the article.

OP why did you feel a need to start this thread if not to mock or put down us prudish Americans. I cannot read the article. Now if we were having a discussion about lesbians having babies and told us what it said that would be different.

BTW when Janet Jackson did here SB stunt I could careless you saw that stupid star. My only grip was they said it was an "accident". I believe it was always planned.
