Cub Scout question...

I have a cub scout question that's not related to gifts if it's OK. What age can boys start. I have a 1st grader - is it 1st or 2nd grade?

Yes, first grade is the first year they can join, and they would be a Tiger Scout.

So second pp Tiger cubs is 1st grade. You can start any time during the year, just contact the local pack and tell them you want to sign up. If you are not sure who to contact just check with your local churches, the pack will be chartered thru one of them. If you don't want to go that route you can also go online and find them thru the national council website.

But to correct pp Tigers is no longer the first year you can start - at least not everywhere. There is actually a pilot program that they just started in some parts of the country for kindergarteners. They are called "Lions". It's the rebirth of a program from the 50s believe it or not (My father was one). You'd have to ask at council level if the program is available in your area.

You are volunteering, they should give you a card at the very least.

I have been a gs leader for 5 years and think I have received a card two times. I think some parents forget we are volunteers and put in so much of our own time and money.

I usually do cards and a small gift or candy

It is new. They just started in 2008 and only in limited areas. I found out about it thru meritbadge.com and only by accident.

Around here boys start at age 8 ~ I'm the Bear Leader (9 year olds) Scouting takes a lot of my time at patience - 9 year old boys in a group are wild. We are all women leaders ~ I truely think the boys need a male influence in Scouts. We will have a Pizza Party & the boys will make ornaments next month.

I wanted to add that not all packs are chartered thru churches. Ours is thru the local lions club.

I am a den leader and I am the only one in the pack that has done Christmas gifts. I only have a den of 4 boys though.

Last year when the boys were Bears I got them pocket knives (on sale for 1.00) from Harbor Freight since we had whittling chip classes set up for January and February and I wanted all the boys to have their own knife.

This year the boys are getting Klutz knot tying board books (with strings for practicing) from a Scholastic Book sale that I worked at last spring.
