I used to do 95% of my grocery shopping at Stop and Shop. They took American Express, which is essential. I collect the double miles. Then Big Y started taking Amex so I went there for the loss leaders and picked up other things. In the last few months, Stop and Shop has RENOVATED! Boar's Head is the predominent deli meat. They don't have capicola, genoa or hard salami on the quick order screen, I don't even know if they have it in the deli and roast beef is about $2 more per pound than it is a Big Y. I don't like the way they have organized the produce dept. It's like little produce stations that try to make you feel like you are at a farm market. The problem with that? I am at a supermarket. I want to find things quickly and conveniently. The fish department is okay. They still have the same sushi but the sales are NOT what they were and Big Y seems to do better. Today I went to a Price Chopper. It is new so I know those prices can't continue. 49 cents for iceberg lettuce, $4.99 for angus porterhouse steak, 99 cents for green beans, $1.88 for Tropicana Ruby Red Gratefruit juice. Any opinions or vents?

I'm just over the MA/CT border. Price Chopper is consistently lower in price than any store....except SuperWalmart.

DH likes Shaw's meat better though. It also costs more.

Big Y & Stop&Shop are too far & cost more anyway.

Stop and Shop has better meat and much lower prices--at least around here! I like the buy one/get one, or two, sometimes three "free" at Big Y. Besides, Stop and Shop now delivers around here, which I love since I hate grocery shopping with a passion!

Our town has a single grocery store at the moment - a Super Stop and Shop. We are big enough for another grocery store. A story has gone around that S&S bought the lease of a department store space when that store closed so they could prevent another grocery store coming into town (another store had wanted to come here). Our S&S has prices higher than a S&S two towns away that has competition. However, I admit that I do shop at this store because it is so close, though I don't like myself for it. I hear we may finally have competition within the next year or so.

I usually have DH drop by price chopper on his way home from work - the prices are usually pretty low

You must live near me. We have S&S and an IGA thats it. I shop @ S&S because it's close but the prices kill me.

Used to be at Super Stop & Shop every week, but last year I switched to Market Basket. MB is nothing fancy to look at, believe me, but you can't beat the prices. Market Basket white American cheese at the deli is never over $2.99 and on sale it is $1.99. I can't bring myself to get the Boar's Head at $5.99 anymore.

Wow, we must all live relatively close - also three miles from the CT border here- love Big Y, but there is a new Super Stop and Shop being built in Springfield, where else but across from a Big Y. Now we should see competition heighten when it opens. Love the buy1 get 2 free sales at Big Y.

I stopped shopping at Stop & Shop 1 1/2 years ago. I shop at Shop Rite much lower prices.

i usually do my shopping at big y. i find it to be cleaner than the stop and shop here (in our big university town). i will go into the stop and shop to see if there are any good sales though, because big y tends to hike up the prices and they don't really reduce them often, other than the occasional buy 1 get 2 free sale (which is awesome!).

I lived in NY mid-Hudson Valley and shopped at Price Chopper and Shop Rite. Moved to CT and there was Stop & Shop closest to me but also a Big Y. I usually went to Stop and Shop because AMEX was accepted, but I shopped the sales at Big Y. My grocery bill went up about $50 a week for the same stuff in CT! That was about 10 years ago. Now that Big Y accepts AMEX I will buy more than just sale stuff there. Really, I don't like either store. Big Y is small, its hard for 2 carts to pass in the aisles, and no Boar's Head! Stop & Shop is huge, but its hard to get out of there quickly, and for being so big there is an amazing lack of variety in many areas (bread, frozen foods, etc), but I have to say, I love Boar's Head, can't stand to eat other cold cuts!

Can't stand Big Y, like Stop & Shop, LOVE Price Chopper.

Our Price Chopper carries the same pre-made sushi that our Stop & Shop carries, but the Price Chopper in Vernon, CT makes it to order and it is terrific. I only wish they would do that at ours.

depends on sales...I used to only go to Stop & Shop, but the store i go to is one of the biggest stores, and is always CROWDED!
Big Y (in my area) is newer, therefore cleaner...and always has awesome buy 1 get 2 deals.
honestly I think I'm starting to like Big Y more. However I like s&s's deli counter better.

Price Chopper is usually always the cheapest. However, their quality stinks, at least the one by my school's campus. The amount of flies I've seen near the meat there is DISGUSTING. The one over by Showcase North isn't too bad though and if I'm in the area I'll shop there.

I shop at Shaw's. Its a bit more expensive for meat, but I haven't had any problems there and it seems clean enough for me.

The prices at Stop & Shop are really high, it seems that I get very little for my money.
I do like Big Y's buy 1 get 2 free sales, and that is really the only time I get there. For products like Boar's Head, I go to a local deli.
I go to Shop Rite 90% of the time and sometimes go to Xpect Discounts for certain items - not familar with Price Chopper or Market Pantry.
There is a store called Price Rite? that has really good prices, but it is in Bridgeport, and although the prices are good and the store immaculate - neighborhood isn't so great.
