CS2 picture in text

Hi,

I used CS2 a year ago and now can't remember squat. I am having problems with very simple text and putting a part of a picture in each letter. I can get the entire picture with the clipping mask but I want each letter of the name to have a different character. How can I do this?

Could someone please either PM or tell me how to do it

If you follow the instructions in this tutorial it will help you. I know in PS Elements you can put more than one picture in to the text so I'd imagine you can do it with CS2 also. In PSE you would place any subsequent layers between the first graphic "inserted" in the letters and the text. You may have to erase parts of the upper layers to get the lower ones to show through.

Thank you Dom! I use to know Photoshop but because of my brain injury each time I open it is like the first time. Not as bad as 50 first dates but bad.

I did learn the clipping mask for the 5th time and am getting very close to what I want. Unfortunately, I want to manipulate the photo into each letter. Like you do with the Star Wars.

BTW, because of your great shirts we all wore to Jedi training both my children got picked. Now DH says he will wear a shirt when we return in Sept. Thank you Dom for doing great work!

Although I do not use the way outlined in this tutorial (sorry, forgot the link last time) to make my Star Wars DISign it would work for everything but the chrome outline. Just repeat steps 4 & 5 for each graphic you want to add.

The way I do it is to make a mask by turning the letters transparent. It's like a stencil you would use to paint on a wall. Anything you placed behind it would show through the openings. Either way will work but for the Star Wars DISign my way is easier.

Dom, Thanks so much for the help! I am getting better already but have yet to try the placement of characters. I will do that later in the morning.

I am not going to even try your Star Wars shirts, you are the master and I will just have to request a shirt for DH in the name of Steve. I am going to try some girlie designs for now. This is just a good addition to my custom Disney sewing.

Dom, sorry, I have more to ask. I have learned two ways to do this.
1. Is the Alt key with the picture on the top of the layers and text under.
2. To put text on picture then use select, load selection. Turn off the text and click on background then go to the layer tab, new and copy.

The second gives me a way to add outline and bevel to letters.

Is that what you mean by clipping mask? I know both are masks but two different ways of doing the same thing.

I'm not sure what a clipping mask is.

The way I do it:

1. Create a new document with a white background.

2. Type the name out in a bold font like Impact using a dark color.

3. Once I have the type sized and placed I simplify it (rasterize in CS2?) then stroke (outline) if that is what I want.

4. Merge the type layer with the white background.

5. Using the magic eraser I "erase" the letters which leaves me with a "stencil" of the letters. I then place my images behind the "stencil" so the parts I want show through.

It is a little more complicated and does not allow the text to remain editable but I've yet to find an easier way to do the SW DISign. If it wasn't for the chrome outline either of the other ways would work. It really depends on the design.

Dom, I have never thought to use an eraser! I am off to go try this. Thank you again for help. As a newbie again, I sure do appreciate the hand holding.

Dom! I did it! I am so surprised but I love it. Here is what I made. It is a take off of AMY's design but I used each piece into each letter as we talked about.
