They put drainage tiles in to move the water around, and unfortunately for my neighbors, they were in a low spot. Their basement was dry for 5 years, then all of sudden had problems the spring after the new homes were going in, it was a heavy rain, and well we moved in the house that weekend. So, i recall there first flooding.
So, they ended up with 2 sump pump pits, and 3 lines hauling water out of the basement, with 3 pumps, and a back-up one too. This was after they dug up around their basement, and recemented to try to prevent the leaks around the foundation.
There sump pump, even when it hasn't rained for a few days, is always running. Like every 30 seconds it turns on. Its been running non stop recently with all the snow melting and rain we have had..
