Crusin' to Alaska May 24th, 2011 (Lots of photos, menus, ship docs)

8:40 AM: The car is packed and I finally shooed everyone out into the car. Only one errand left…drop the dog off with my Mother-in-Law and we’re off. We reached the Canadian border crossing around 11:00. It took 15 – 20 minutes to get through which is probably the longest we’ve ever waited. We somehow ended up in the slowest line and all the other lanes let through two or three cars to our one. (Didn’t they know that Mickey was waiting for me?) We parked at the Canada Place cruise terminal around noon.

As we headed up to check the luggage all along our path there were Disney Cast members giving “high fours” to our kids and asking if they could direct us anywhere. We practically walked through the carry-on scanner checkpoint. There were only a handful of people in line and it was nice not to have to remove our shoes. Around the next corner the passport check-in line seemed pretty long, but it moved very quickly and in what was probably less than 10 minutes we were passing under the Disney Cruise Line banner.

i-zwWd68k-M.jpg

Our official check in time was 12:30 – 1:00 and we were right in our zone. We spotted the Castaway Club check-in desk and made our way to the queue. There was no one in line and a cast member removed a rope barrier for us so we didn’t have to wind our way around. “Yeah! Fast pass!”

It took them maybe 5 minutes to check our paperwork, take our pictures and hand us our Key-To-The-World cards. They didn’t give us a boarding card because they were boarding everyone at this point. Minnie was out taking pictures so the kids got a quick picture with her and we hurried to the boarding line. Another quick picture of the kids with the 2011 cruise background then a cast member scanned our KTTW cards and on-board we went. I love it when they announce our family name and the crew applauds.

i-hr62SQQ-M.jpg

Then you are directed to the first of many many sanitizing experiences. There is a sanitizing foam station at the entrance every time you get on and off the ship. (Sanitizing is the subject of many a joke by both cast and crew)

It was just after 1:00 and the rooms weren’t going to be ready until 2:00 so we headed to BBB for lunch. (Our 2nd hand sanitizing experience in 15 minutes) Oh, remember I said I am famous for forgetting to pack something important. It was at this point that I realized that I forgot to pack the medicated patch for sea-sick prone DH. After digging through every carry-on bag twice I remembered that it was in the outer pocket of a carry-on bag I was going to bring, but changed my mind about. Luckily we had plenty of Dramamine and he was cool about the whole thing. You’ll just have to stay tuned to see if he made it through the trip OK.

I need to explain something here so some of the photos throughout this trip report make sense. One of our vacation traditions it taking something with us that we take photos of throughout the trip. The theme of this trip…”Where’s Perry?” We brought DD’s Perry the Platypus and he will be in many of the photos I post here.

i-2CBPbpR-L.jpg

Then we wandered around to see the view of Vancouver B.C. from the deck.

i-D8Cm6LP-L.jpg

i-RXJ2SJ3-L.jpg

Our room was ready at 1:45 so we went to check it out and I took some photos before we trashed it. We’re in room 8000 at the very front port side of deck 8. It was awesome and we feel totally spoiled by the extra square footage and the wonderful view. The kids were more interested in our very first Castaway Club gift bag.

i-fTQHNMk-M.jpg

We looked around the room a bit then went down to our DIS group meet in the Promenade Lounge. It was fun to put faces to the people I’ve been chatting with for the past few months.

While we chatted we had an opportunity to try out the new Wave Phones. It’s a whole new world now that our kids are 12 and 10 and they are responsible enough to go exploring on their own. (And I mean, how far can they go right?) We relaxed and they texted their location. When we were ready to go we just called them.

We met at the Oceaneer Lab to get my son’s GPS wrist band and then down to check out the new tween club The Edge. It was not on the Wonder the last time we sailed and my DD was happy to have a new place she could go.

i-VBk3PVR-M.jpg

Back to the cabin to unpack, then it was time for the mandatory life boat drill. It was nice not to have to wear the life jackets to the drill. Then we ran up to deck 9 to get good spots at the Adventures Away party. My son and I danced while my tween looked “above it all” and DH amused himself by filming her. They gave us all gold streamers to wave and I was beyond happy when that magical horn sounded and we were underway. I heard someone say that we were actually leaving a little early.

i-9NL7qwk-M.jpg

Christiaan, the wonderful Cruise Director, and Mickey look on as the horn blows and confetti streams down
i-B3vJ5b5-L.jpg

Once the horn blew the kids lost interest in dancing so we ran off to the sports deck where DS and DH joined a soccer game while I took pictures of the Wonder sailing under the Vancouver Bridge. It was kind of chilly so once we passed the bridge my daughter and I went back to the cabin to warm up.

(Stay tuned for Day 1: part 2)

We have late dining so we went to the 6:15 All Aboard: Let the Magic Begin show featuring comedian Heath Hyche. We had not seen it before and I really liked all the details they added on the big screen behind the main action. I know I missed a dozen subtle Disney details. The cast show was good, but Heath Hyche was hilarious. My son laughed so hard he fell out of his seat into the aisle. He can’t wait for his long show later this week.

i-b4tx6vF-M.jpg

After the show we went to the Mickey Mania game show in Studio Sea. My son convinced me to be his partner and we ended up as team Purple Pluto. We did pretty well, but I found out I need to brush up on my classic Disney movies. My son, who claims to be shy, but is really the family comedian, had the audience and show hosts cracking up at his begging antics to accrue more points. Unfortunately we didn’t win, but it was a close game and we had fun.

Drew tugs my begging son back onto the stage.
i-qJPSRBk-M.jpg

I love how DH took this so it looks like I'm wearing Mouse ears.
i-5Nhm7hf-M.jpg

A little time for photos and some shuffleboard.

Where's Perry?
i-5NHMjGX-L.jpg

i-psw2JJx-M.jpg

Dinner was at Animator’s Palate. Our servers are Mihailo from Serbia and Corrina from Argentina. They are AWESOME and we adored them immediately. Of course we ate too much and by 9:00 DS was falling asleep in his chair. DD volunteered to take him back to the room if we’d bring her dessert. DEAL! So my DH and I casually shared our desserts and watched the dinner show. We have great main aisle seats so Sorcerer Mickey was right in front of us.

i-gG7Cqkv-M.jpg

We brought my daughter her dessert, and although she was ready to go out again (family karaoke), my DH crashed immediately on the bed and I barely got my teeth brushed before I joined him. We tried to watch a few minutes of Green Hornet on the TV, but gave up after 10 minutes and it was lights out by 10:30.

Perry and a few other "friends" met our 1st towel animal.

Coming soon - Day 2: At Sea

Hi!

I was on the same cruise and remember Perry the Platypus!LOL. I beleive it was at the juggler show. We were a few rows behind.

We might have also been directly across from you at the Heath Hyach show as well since I saw the boy across the aisle from me fall off his seat laughing. LOL

Hi, Dawn!!
I just came across your report, and I'm hooked already! My DH and I dream of cruising to Alaska one day on DCL, so I can't wait to read all about your adventures!! You have a beautiful family!

I'm also loving the "Where's Perry" pics! Too cute!

You're off to a fabulous start, and I can't wait to read more!!:thumbsup2

Unfortunately I woke up at 4:30 with one of my migraines. I get them pretty regularly, but it is usually manageable if I catch it early. I took some meds and lay there staring at the ceiling thinking about the day ahead. I was just thinking how smooth the ride had been and how quiet the cabin was when I felt the ship speed up. Then I heard a small creaking from somewhere in the cabin as the room rocked slowly from side to side. I had brought ear plugs in case we had a noisy cabin, but we never had to use them. This was the only time I heard any noise. I eventually fell back to sleep and woke again at 8:30 when my son was marveling to everyone that he slept until 8:30. He has an internal alarm that wakes him between 6:00 and 6:30 every day so 8:30 was surprising to us all.

i-rjMvntf-M.jpg

The morning was a little grey and foggy.

We got up at a very leisurely pace, dressed and went to BBB for breakfast. Then the kids sprinted off to the clubs and DH and I went back to the room. I still had my headache so I took some more medication and we settled in to watch a movie. DH fell asleep, but I laid there a bit then got up to write my day one report and sort through the 258 photos we took.

i-xnhzT3J-S.jpg

At 2:00 DH and I went to the Vista Spa for our spa reservation. We pre-booked the Exotic Rasul. It was our first time in the spa we found it very tranquil in there. (as it should be) After filling out paperwork they got us some hot tea, showed us to the changing rooms and gave us robes. Then they showed us to our private Rasul room and explained what all the scrubs and lotions did. The way this spa treatment works is you and your SI (significant other) get to apply the body scrubs and lotions on each other and then hang out in your private steam room together. There is also a shower in there with shampoo, conditioner and soap. It was very relaxing and we enjoyed our “couple only” time.

After our time was up we were taken to the Rainforest room where they gave us champagne and we had access to several different saunas. We could have hung out in there for a while, but we decided to just drink the champagne then get dressed to go back to our room.

The kids came back and DH went to get us sandwiches from Goofy’s Galley. They weren’t great, but they gave us a much needed boost. We still had many hours until dinner. My daughter really wanted to go to Bingo so we went to the Spa Vista Bingo in Wavebands at 4:00. DH and I are not big fans, but it was one of the things DD really wanted to do so we told her we would go at least once and if we won enough to play again we might. We didn’t win anything.

i-QVkjqRL-S.jpg

Now it was time to get ready for formal night. DD straightened her hair while DH and I got dressed and coaxed DS, who lives in shorts and tees, into his formal attire. He kept insisting that the tie was strangling him even though his collar was so large he could stick his whole hand down it. (My kids can be very dramatic) After we were all done primping I took some photos of the kids on the verandah. The sun had come out in the afternoon and it had turned into a really pleasant day. (but windy because we were moving)

i-GxCc7Gf-L.jpg

DD’s 1st pair of high heels in her favorite color.

i-cvhQPpf-M.jpg

This photo totally shows off DS’s quirky personality.

At 6:00 we left for the Golden Mickeys. DH and I saw it on our 1st cruise, but DD and DS had not. My DD loved it, but DS was not as entertained. He likes live sporting events, but not theater so much. I enjoyed it, which is all that matters. ;-) I took many photos (non-flash) and sang along with all the songs.

i-Pjx6RzK-M.jpg

i-Jkd693p-M.jpg

I wish my kids were young enough to do this. So cute.

Continued in part 2...

After the show we headed to get photos taken in the lobby. It’s not every day a mom gets her whole family to put on formal wear. We took some professional photos in the lobby and a few with my camera around the ship.

i-ppzHWhL-L.jpg

i-NkPNhQB-L.jpg

With the leftover time until dinner the kids played some “formal” shuffleboard and then we sat in the Promenade Lounge watching the little kids dance at Family Dance with Alex and Justin. My son went and stood against a wall because I was embarrassing him by singing along. (Don’t you just love embarrassing your kids?)

i-gdNxXsk-M.jpg

Dinner was at Parrot Cay tonight with the Golden Mickey menu. The broccoli blue cheese soup was good. (and I am not a broccoli fan) The kids’ sirloin steaks were perfectly done and very tender and I loved my creamy pesto gnocchi. I love the formal photo the ship photographer took of DH and I, but I hate that it’s in the dining room with a table of dishes behind us.

i-SFLSRZc-M.jpg

i-CLdd2gz-M.jpg

I should have brought a bowtie for Perry for formal night.

As you may have noticed I haven’t mentioned the food much nor included any photos. (A lot of people post photos of their meals in these reports) While I did take photos of practically every menu and every dish at every dinner I chose not to include them in these daily reports. It would make each day too long. I’m thinking about including a dining section at the end, and navigators too once I get them scanned.

After dinner we changed out of our formal wear and the kids went up for a swim while DH and I went down the Wave Bands see Heath Hyche’s adult show. Wave Bands was completely full when we arrived so they were diverting the overflow to Diversions. (Ironic) We took some big wing backed chairs near a porthole window and had our own private flat screen TV. DH ordered a beer and we settled back to watch the show. Unfortunately Heath’s jokes were hit or miss tonight and he started off stronger than he ended, but we still enjoyed a grown-up’s night out.

Back at the room the kids were ready for bed. We said good night to our towel monkey and it was lights out around 11:30.

Day 3: Skagway - coming soon

Love your report! We leave on Aug. 9th for our cruise. Your report is getting me very excited. My DD's are 11 and 9 - I'm very curious how your daughter liked the Edge? My 11 year old DD is very excited about that. Also, any problems with the wave phones?

Can't wait to read more.

DD was playing shy the first half of the trip and even though we tried to encourage her to go to The Edge she kept opting to go with DS to the pool or she hung out with DH and I. Finally there were some activities she really wanted to do (crafts & then karaoke) and she made some friends. From then on we didn't see her very much. (except required meals) I'm not sure they hung out in the actual club. I know they went to get ice cream several times. Once she made some friends she was having a blast.

The Wave phones were mostly great. It took a little time getting used to how to use them and we did have one issue. DS had sign-out priviledges at the Lab as long as he called us before he left there. We found out one day, when he couldn't reach us, that the two Wave phones have slightly different numbers (our room 8000 had 80001 & 80002) and if they called 8000 from the lab it dialed the room and 80001. Well, DD had 80001 that day so we didn't get the call. From then on we were careful to take the 80001 phone and give DD 80002.

Also, you have to keep the phones on your body because they don't ring, they vibrate. We just got used to checking them often when the kids weren't with us. Also they have a clock on them so that was useful.

Hope that answers your questions.

One packing tip I read on another trip report (unfortunately I don't remember who so I can't give credit... guess that's what happens when you read 100's of them); but they brought a plastic storage container that they put there FE gifts in and then as they got them throughout the cruise they put them in the container above the tv. Then on the last night they closed up the container and threw it in the suitcase. It's already on my packing list for our cruise!!

I wanted to thank you for the suggestion about the plastic bin. It held quite a few of my FE gifts on the way there and was a great thing carry back the gifts we received. It kept many of the items from getting wrinkled or squished.

Your reports are really really great and very entertaining. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share!

We set the clocks back 1 hour last night so when I woke it was 6:00. I played games on our I-pad until DS woke up at 8:00 and we decided to go to breakfast. While we got ready my DH woke up too so he came with us. We left a note for DD who was lightly snoring in her bunk.

We decided on BBB for omelets, fruit, Mickey waffles and a variety of pastries and drinks. Afterwards my son headed to the Lab for some fun and games and DH and I wandered the ship. The scenery has changed quite a bit in the past two days. Today we woke to grey skies and white capped mountains on both sides. The ship has slowed and the ride is nice and smooth as we glide towards Tracy Arm Fjord. Around 9:30 the sun started to peek out. It is going to be a beautiful day.

i-bXMLM3T-M.jpg

We got some more coffee & tea and went back to the cabin with hot chocolate for DD. She was still asleep. Did she want to sleep her vacation away? We roused her and she stumbled off to find breakfast. I decided to go out on the verandah to finish up my trip report from yesterday up until right now. The view is pretty distracting though.

i-N2PX3ft-M.jpg

i-gZWDP3f-L.jpg

We went to Goofy’s Galley for a light snack at noon then the kids went to the theater to see Mars Needs Moms. DH and I attended an adult animation class in Animator’s Palate where we learned to draw Pluto. While AP seems a likely location for a drawing class the table set-up and the placement of the paintbrush supports made getting a good view of the demonstration awkward. We muddled through though and I was happy with my finished Pluto.

i-9RTZcXJ-S.jpg

DH's on the left, mine on the right.

With the kids still at the movie and the ship just entering Tracy Arm we went up to BBB to hit the special Alaskan Grill. I was expecting a big long buffet of decorated tables, ice sculptures and lots of Alaskan food, (kind of like Pirate’s Night in the Caribbean) but it was just a big BBQ grill with a choice of grilled items. You could get side dishes at the buffet line in BBB. We got a few items from the buffet and a big piece of grilled steak. The weather was simply gorgeous now and it was quite warm on deck. We were moving at a snail’s pace and there were high cliffs and little waterfalls all around us.

i-gdHgrV5-M.jpg

i-kQFFZnq-M.jpg

We decided to watch the scenery from our cabin. We figured we’d catch one side coming in and the other side leaving. It was a nice leisurely trip and as the ice bergs began to come in bigger clumps we started to see seals floating on some of them. I watched a mother and her baby for quite a while through my binoculars. (Don’t forget binoculars!)

i-qgQTbbk-M.jpg

i-Kd2bLJt-M.jpg

Then we caught our first glimpse of the glacier. OMG! So pretty and blue. All together we took over 400 photos of just Tracy Arm and the glacier today. (It was hard to pick favorites to include.)

i-vmRtF9n-M.jpg

It was probably nearly an hour later that we actually came as close to the glacier as we were going to get. The naturalist came on the speakers and announced that due to the high seal population on the bergs we’d be stopping here. The captain decided it would be dangerous to spin the boat around so they announced that anyone who wanted to see the glacier had to come to the bow (front) of the boat. I grabbed my binoculars and three different cameras and headed up. Everyone on my deck was doing the same and it was a mad rush of people all going up the stairs at once. I found a spot as close as I could get and took as many photos of the glacier as I could. My photos do not due the colors justice.

i-qwmQgcJ-M.jpg

The ship was super crowded up front with everyone trying to get photos of the glacier and photos of themselves and their family members in front of the glacier. After 10 – 15 minutes someone came on the speaker and asked those in the front to kindly move back so those in the back could get a turn taking photos. Most did move, but some were camped out. DH, DD and I eventually got up front and took photos of each other in front of the glacier.

At the same time a family of mountain goats was on a hill nearby. The baby goat was getting huge Oohs and Aahs from the guests.

i-sNdjT6r-M.jpg

After a reasonable amount of time for everyone to get photos of the glacier and the goats the Wonder slowly backed out the way it came. After it was clear of the seals it spun around to head back towards our next destination…Skagway. We passed a little island on our way out, Sawyer Island I believe it was called, and we saw the bald eagle nest and its two regal residents. I don’t have a super zoom lens so I wasn’t able to get pictures.

Now I’m sitting on my verandah again enjoying the mellow evening watching the sheer rock faces with their scattered waterfalls and trying to remember all the details for this report. Before long it was time to get ready for the show. The scenery was still gorgeous and I was sad that I was going to miss some of it.

To be continued in part 2

A few more waterfalls we passed before we left for the show.

i-gJKZjcX-L.jpg

i-wjmbHCN-L.jpg

Tonight’s show is the Heath Hyche Family show. I hoped he was better than he was in the adult show and he was. We laughed ourselves silly. He has an amazing energy and it really resonates with the kids. He even used a few kids in his show and the ending was everyone’s favorite skit. (sorry, no spoilers)

We had an hour between the show and dinner so we went to “Who Wants To Be a Mouseketeer?” in Studio Sea. (Another show we’d never been to) They give each family member a number as you enter and then the contestant is randomly selected. Each contestant can bring another person up to help them, which is good, since two of the contestants were 5 year olds. It was a cute trivia game based on the Who Wants to be a Millionaire game only with 5 questions, not 14, and no million. (It was a trophy and pins) They were able to get through 5 contestants and each one won the big prize.

i-jsdGCMW-S.jpg

Dinner was a Triton’s tonight with the French Menu. Everything was yummy, especially my son’s lamb with polenta. I love polenta and I ate most of it since he doesn’t care for it. The soufflé with vanilla sauce was definitely the favorite item though.

i-t3hznDN-M.jpg

DH, DD & Perry watching the room change color.

Tonight, at the end of the meal, Mihailo made the kids a cute origami fish which Perry wore as a hat. My son was exhausted so he went back to the room and went to bed.

i-z8kDvFN-M.jpg

After dinner I raced out to the lobby to get photos with Eskimo Minnie, Deadliest Catch Mickey (Another blogger called him that and I liked it so I’m using it). DD & DH came with me. Out on deck afterwards we bumped into Koda & Kenai who were just circling deck 4 interacting with passengers. (photo op) Then Chip & Dale came by.

i-J5b2n2t-M.jpg

i-BtGwfNC-L.jpg

i-N2tx2f4-M.jpg

The sunset was gorgeous and the night mild so we hung out on deck to play some shuffleboard. During the game Chip and Dale came by and tried to steal a puck and then tried to steal Perry. Their handler made them give him back.

i-cwZ3JWJ-M.jpg

i-r5NF9bN-M.jpg

It was an amazing day and, after shooing our towel puppy off the bed, we fell asleep around 11:30. We wanted to be rested for our first port tomorrow. Skagway, here we come.

i-JB99kvb-M.jpg

Just a side note…Disney leaves these great booklets in your room the night before each port and Tracy Arm too. It is filled with puzzles and games, interesting facts about the location and a map. (Nice touch Disney!)

those pics are amazing!!! thanks for taking the time to post a review!

Your pictures are amazing. I am loving your report. :) I am jealous of the close up picture of the glacier and that you saw the mountain goats. I had to take my DDs to the Disney Friends Tea so we went inside early so we didn't get to see them.

We were also at the Adult Animation class. Great job on the Plutos. :)

ETA: We didn't get those booklets for port days. :( I only got the shopping guide. Was it a Castaway Club thing? We were first time cruisers.

I'm having a BLAST enjoying your trip report~~ :woohoo~~ Your pictures are wonderful. I wouldn't mind a few food photos. Your idea of putting them at the end sounds perfect.

The formal pics of your family turned out great! Tell you DD that her shoes ROCKED~

I must admit that the part that made me laugh out loud was the "Deadliest Catch Mickey"!! I"m going to borrow that in July when we go on our own Alaskan adventure.

Does everyone get the little books each day in port/Tracy Arm? I'm hoping we do since our family is all adults.

Anxious for more fun with you popcorn::

Does everyone get the little books each day in port/Tracy Arm? I'm hoping we do since our family is all adults.

Not the OP, but wanted to share our experience. We were two adults, and I stumbled across these on one of the port days. They were not left on our cabin, but I was able to pick them up from Guest Services. I am guessing they leave them for families with children, as they are geared towards the younger set.

There is a Navigator insert for each port that is left the night before you arrive in that port.

HTH!
