Cruising with a toddler - Looking for advice

Oh I forgot to mention...

We're stopping in Nassau and CC and one day at sea.

One more thing to my really looooooong post a little above this - the muster/safety drill. Yes everyone must attend. Bring a little bag with some snacks, toys, and sippy cup. This took about 20 minutes and we were in the hot sun. Some people are lucky to get to stand inside. DD was fussy until we pulled out a bag of yogurt melts - always a favorite snack. This kept her entertained for the remaining time.
We also had to do this odd customs check when we arrived in Key West. I don't know if you will have to do this. We left from Miami, went to CC then Nassau then KW before going back to Miami. Well even if you weren't getting off the ship in KW, you had to check in with customs. We had to fill the large theater and get called row by row. I didn't know this would take so long. Just a heads up if you have something like this on your trip. Bring some snacks and entertainment.

our youngest was 2 when we went on our first cruise. he did well. it was a 7 day, on magic. we left him at the nursery twice, once for palo dinner & once for palo brunch. we didn't think he'd like being dropped off, since the only place he's been away from us (dropped off) was at grandma's! but he did ok. i recall while dropping him off, another child was being dropped off...and that child was starting to fuss/cry/etc. and i thought..oh no, it'll be a "chain reaction", and was hoping our ds2 wouldn't start...and he didn't. but when we went to pick him up...he totally ran up to us, and started crying & calling out "mommy! daddy!" maybe he missed us? maybe 2 hours was a bit too long?

he did enjoy the shallow splash area of the pool. i think it's no longer there now. at the time we cruised, they were allowed in there w/their swim diapers. at least, that's what i recall. we spent time there. and we had brought little water (bath?) toys (plastic cups, little squirt things, etc.) and took maybe 2/3 things w/us each time we went to the splash area. and he was content!

he was (still is!) a good eater, so dinner wasn't a problem! the crayons/papers/menu things helped him. the wait staff was really good at bringing our dss (older brother was 4 at the time) food out first. and they were good at entertaining them as well. and we were used to having to cut up our children's food into smaller pieces for them to eat/pick up...but our wait staff totally did that for us, after seeing us do it the first night! so their dinner would come already "pre-cut" into smaller pieces! that was super sweet & nice!!!

i was concerned about seasickness for our dss. we think our 2 yo may have been seasick! he wasn't eating as much as he normally was! especially the first night! so we asked our waiter for some granny smith apple (our pediatrician had recommended that when we inquired about seasickness and children, and we what alternatives were there)...and i think i was a bit seasick too. but after eating our granny smith apple slices..we were totally fine!

i know you didn't ask...but for our plane ride...we brought some fruit snacks (someone mentioned it to me...certainly not my idea!) for our dss, for the earpopping issues that may occur. it's like adults having to yawn or chew gum. fruit snacks is the same effect for children as us chewing gum, i guess. and that seems to work..

as for excursions...we didn't really do much. we did an aquarium tour thing in key west. a submarine thing in cozumel. and in grand cayman, we did a snorkeling w/sting rays thing...but i think he was free.

have a fabulous cruise! :flower:

yes..the safety drill! we put the life vests on in our rooms. and b/c he was so little it looked super uncomfortable for him! his neck was too short, the vest was way too bulky, etc. he was miserable...to say the least! but he was a trooper! and knew that he needed to leave it on. we were outside...and i remember it was so hard to carry him around trying to get to our station! once we were there, he wanted to take it off...but we reminded him that it's the rule, that we need to keep all our vests on, etc. and he was starting to fuss a bit...not really. a cm saw us/him, and told us that we can take it off of him! we were so grateful!! he was so happy after the vest was off him! then, our 4 yo wanted to take it off...but we told him "it's the rule, keep vests on, etc.".

Happy birthday to your LO! :bday: Be sure to let the cast members know! They will be sure to celebrate. You will at least get a special dessert and a visit from Mickey at dinner so don't miss it (I missed our anniversary dinner - mistake #1 from me oops).

The dream will be great! A bigger splash zone since your LO is too young for the pool like mine. This was a huge hit for my DD. She just turned 17 months. This was a hard age since she is running now. She loved the stairs and elevators lol! I would definitely bring a stroller if your LO is walking a lot and distracted by things. This was a big help! When DD was over tired or just needed to rest, we used it. Our stateroom host showed us a place to park our stroller in the hallway so this saved us the room. If not, I had planned on putting it under the bed (didn't fit) or in the tub for the night.

Sleep was our biggest issue. Bring ANYTHING that will help your LO sleep through the night. At home, DD sleeps great! 11 hour nights and 3 hour naps - never wakes. She does have an air filter in the room and I think she is used to the noise. I debated on a white noise machine, but thought the bathroom would have a fan or I could use a phone app. No bathroom fan and the apps didn't work well. DD hardly slept. She woke up and seemed confused as to where she was. I let her sleep in bed with us. We were all so exhausted by the end of the trip. I hope this doesn't happen to you. I know a few other families had a rough first night, but things got better them. Do whatever you can to get sleep.

Meal time was time consuming. The first night takes the longest. Download the cruise navigator app for your phone and open it once you board the trip. This will have all of the menu's for the week. I looked up the menus ahead of time to see what DD might want. Some nights I sent DH ahead and he would order for all of us and I would come to dinner 15-20 minutes later. Or find some way to stagger meals between the two of you. DD feeds herself and we help her too, but it takes time. She was wearing most of her macaroni in her hair and avocado on her face, but she had a great time. It was hard for me to enjoy dinner as I was worried about her. Also hard to entertain her through meals. We had two other family members who cruised with us, but neither helped me with meals. I know you can use some nursery time for meals too, so that might help. Not many suggestions, just something for you to think about before the cruise since this was a difficult time for us.

Use the nursery time if you can. DH and I have opposite work schedules so DD is almost always home with us. She isn't good with strangers so we didn't use the nursery. We did visit it and it is very nice and the people were very friendly. This would be a great help if your LO will go. Take some time to enjoy the ship :)

CC is wonderful!!! Walk or take the tram to the very end. The splash zone is great! I found the water was warmed a little - perfect for the babies, not sure if it was intentional, and there was a bit of shade. It wasn't too crowded either. Bring lots of sunscreen. My DD refused a hat :( but we managed to spray sunscreen on her head (she is still bald lol) and she didn't get sunburn! It was surprisingly hot out for this time of year.

Nassau - we got off the boat just to go to the t-shirt shop. My husband loves the bamboo made shirts.

Food on the boat - I'm not sure what your LO is eating. My LO was behind in solids at 1 yr. She loved the melons on the boat and the ice cream - her first ice cream! You can request veggies. They had turkey meatballs one night with the spaghetti. I would give DD things from the adult food like avocado and sweet potatoes. Oh and I ordered whole milk from room service every day and kept it in the room fridge for bedtime.

Toys in the room. I brought a little collapsable bucket and some toys and books. DD played with these while we got ready for the day and before bedtime. Was nice to have a place to keep her things.

The nightly shows are great, but many parents said they didn't entertain the really small kids. The 50 years of mickey (?) one did, but the others didn't. You can see the shows in your room if they are going on during bedtime.

Try to go to the sail away and goodbye parties. Meet the characters - they are great with babies! There is so much to do on the ship and we got to do very little. A toddler's day is very busy with eating, sleeping, playing etc so it's hard to fit lots of other stuff in. But enjoy everything you can!

I think I could go on forever, but I'm at work :0 Please ask ANY questions! Overall, the disney crew is amazing and I'm glad I went!

Thank you for sharing! Oh man, where do I start? With my LO, I definitely know to plan, but remain flexible and follow DS's lead. We don't use a sound machine at home (we have one though). Not sure if it will help if he has issues adjusting to sleeping on the ship. I'd hate to take up luggage space if it doesn't work. Did you try using the TV for white noise? I think someone suggested a music channel. I have to find that post.

DS eats really well. He only ate puréed food for maybe two weeks. Now, he eats what I eat. He loves brussel sprouts, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, baked turkey, spaghetti, pancakes, oatmeal...you name it! So, hopefully I can get him some of those veggies onboard. Did you have table mates not traveling with your party? Did they have kids the same age? I'm Concerned about our table mates. I Hope we don't ruin their dinner. Which dining did you have? We have second seating. Based on DS's schedule right now, I think that's best. He usually takes his 2nd (or 3rd) nap around 4-5p. In fact, he's asleep now. He's been asleep since 4:15pm. When he wakes, I could either nurse him, get him a snack from room service or grab a snack from Cabanas until our dinner in the MDR. That's usually when I feed him dinner. So, hopefully it will work on the ship. He usually stays up until 10-11p at home.

I'm Still undecided about Nassau. I'm definitely getting off to get food in the market area right in the port area. I LOVE Bahamian food, so I look fwd to Nassau just for that. Since Nassau day is DS's bday, I've tentatively planned to take him to Ardastra (sp?) Zoo to see the animals. Not much a 12 month old can do in port, but I figured the zoo would be nice for him for his bday. If we do that, we will get off the ship early, do 2.5 (or less) hours at the zoo. Mama (that's me lol) will get some Bahamian food for lunch, then we'll be back on the ship shortly thereafter for a nap. That's the "tentative" plan. :)

I think I'm going to have his diapers/wipes shipped to my friend's place, who will be taking us to the port. This will save luggage space.

What toys (collapsable bucket a

Oops, I wasn't finished...

What specific toys did you bring? I really want to bring a bucket for CC, but I'm concerned about luggage space. What's the name of your collaspable bucket)?

How did your LO do with the character meets? Scared? Okay with them touching/holding or okay as long as you held her?

Did you have Wake Up with Disney, Jr. on your cruise? Did your LO like it?

After reading your post, I Think I'm going to keep my nursery times, if for nothing else than to nap. Lol

I'm concerned about dropping DS off too, because he only gets "dropped off" at grandma's too. Maybe the open house will help.

For the plane ride for takeoff and landing, I plan to nurse him to help with his ears popping.

Hmmm, never considered bringing his squirt bath toys. Thanks for sharing that!

Also, I had no idea about the Granny Smith apples for seasickness. I appreciate that tip!

We have to wear the life vests during the drill? I had no idea. I've never had to do it on previous cruises (other cruise lines). I'm sure DS will not like that. He hated his snowsuit. He much rather just wear a diaper. Lol

You do not have to wear or even bring the life vests to the drill, although putting them on to practice in your stateroom is still a good idea. :)

It is so hard to predict kids at this age! I did try the TV to help with sleep, but my LO is so distracted by everything right now - she is such a busybody lol. And she just seemed to know it wasn’t her home.

DD is also a night owl like your DS :) Does he sleep late too? I love this about DD! She usually sleeps from 10p-9a and naps from 2/3p-5/6p. We had the early meal time so your later meal time is a great idea! I was worried the later time might be too late, but DD feel asleep every day right before dinner. We skipped two dinners because of this - like on castaway day since it was a busy day and she was so tired right before dinner. Our servers still brought dinner to our rooms thought - they were amazing! And your DS sounds like a great eater! This will make life easy on the boat.

They did give us table mates - I was surprised since we had 4 adults and DD. I had read it they had tables of 4 and 6. This might be different as we were on the wonder (a smaller ship). But I think Disney intentionally matched us with a family with a 2 year old girl. We loved them! It was great to have another kid near DD’s age.

It’s nice and easy to get off the boat in Nassau. It’s a short walk from the boat to the shops and the little outdoor shopping area. It was hot out! Don’t forget passports and always have your key to the world cards for you and DS too (we forgot DDs and had to go back). Be safe, they will warn you, but just use common sense. We felt safe and people were very nice - not pushy. I’m not sure how far the zoo is, but sounds like a fun idea and I think I read good reviews.

Shipping diapers and wipes will help since babies travel lite is gone :(

I way overpacked toys, but I was mostly worried about the plane ride - 3 hours from Texas. And DD slept the entire trip - both ways!!! LOL. Anyway, I packed books (her favorite thing right now), V tech zoo animals, 1 stuffed toy that plays music, blocks, a mini mouse that has plastic outfits she likes, an alex toy that you put the toys on a string, and an embarrassing amount of other toys she didn’t play with. I’m an over packer and like to be prepared.

This is the toy bin I brought since it was one we had. The rings come apart and it lays flat.

I didn’t have time to find or order something like this, but this would have been better for the beach then for toy storage:

We met Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Captain Hook, Jiminy Cricket… I think that’s it. DD hated meeting Santa and the Easter Bunny (tried twice!) so I had low expectations for this - wasn’t really going to try. DD was a little hesitant, but Minnie and Mickey were the best! They both got down on DD’s level and waved, Mickey played peak a boo. We never felt rushed, they were extremely patient. I don’t know how they did it, but DD smiled so big! It was the best part of the cruise :)

We did have some morning Disney Jr thing on the boat, but our night owl was going to bed at midnight so we didn’t get up in time. I heard it was good though.

I think someone else mentioned this too - but they don’t make you wear the life vests for the drill.

Please update us after your trip!!!

Yep, DS is the same way! Distracted by everything, even the faint sound of an emergency vehicle in the distance. He's a little busybody. Yes, they are very unpredictable at this age. I just plan based on recent habits, then adjust when he throws me a curve ball. :)

He normally sleeps from 10 or 11p-7a when he's with grandma. However, with me, he wakes up at least once to comfort nurse. BUT, since he's teething, the past two nights he has woken up every 2 hrs. Yikes. I feel like I have a newborn again. :)

Our TA wait listed us for early dining. After much thought, I called to be removed from the wait list and keep our 2nd seating. They had already granted our early seating request, but allowed me to switch it back to 2nd seating. That early dining would always interfere with DS's late afternoon/early evening nap, thus making him SUPER cranky! That's so great your servers brought your dinner to your room so you could still experience the meals from the dining room! Yes, DS is a really good eater. Hopefully that will remain the same on the ship.

Again, I wasn't finished. Lol

I hope we get good table mates too! I hope they match us well. Perhaps someone else traveling with a baby will select 2nd seating too.

Omg, thanks for the link to the collaspable bucket! I was only able to find a canvas one and that wouldn't be good for making sandcastles. I'm going to order it now!

I think I'm going to bring his soft blocks and his favorite book. I have more books on my iPad if needed. Neither will take up a lot of space.

Thank goodness our flight is only an hour. This will be his first flight, so I'm glad it's a short one.

How many nights was your cruise 4 or 5?

I will definitely update you after the cruise!!! I sincerely appreciate you sharing your experience and offering very helpful information. After this experience, do you think you'll do another cruise soon (perhaps next year) or do you want to wait until after DD is older?

That's great DD enjoyed the character meets! I'm hoping the same with DS. This will be his first experience with any kind of character. I bought him a 24" stuffed Mickey Mouse to get him familiar with recognizing Mickey. This morning I turned on Clubhouse Mickey. He started smiling when Mickey came on. :)

We cruised with our 10 month old...We never used the nursery. I just didn't feel comfortable. Looking back I wish we had at least once to have just a little R&R for the two of us....but I am pretty overprotective and didn't. Yes you can be in Nemos Reef. It can get pretty crowded in there (at least on the two cruises we were on) so having a parent with is really a must in my opinion. We also used Babies Travel Lightly and would HIGHLY recommend them. I did pack some diapers and had some sent to the ship. I also ordered wipes, baby food (which you shouldn't need) and formula. It was nice to be all set. The store does carry some diapers but if I remember they were only one size and either really large or really small....can't remember.

Also, don't go on the trip thinking you'll get to "do it all". You'll be disappointed if that is your expectation. We took turns going to some of the shows with the other people we cruised with and the spouse watched the show with our son in the room on the tv. Although, depending on your child, at that age he may be able to sit through some of the show at least. I would recommend a veranda if you don't have one because we spent a good deal of time in our room for naps and while I often napped with him, it was nice to sit on the veranda and just read a book if I wanted.

I lucked out on the the molars - coming in this week! One less thing to worry about on our trip ;)

Just FYI, but if you are are cosleeping, I was able to get two bedrails and put them on the bed so DD and I could sleep together. She didn't sleep well on the couch/bed. It is a tight squeeze, but they fit. DD is a roller in bed!

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the bedrails would fit on the queen bed. I only read people saying they had them for couch beds.

Oh the iPad and iPhone! Lifesavers, but DD is going through tech withdrawal right now ;) I banned everything this week since she had apple overload to get us through the difficult trip times.

An hour flight is nice! Are you in florida? I grew up in Key West which is why we did the Wonder (had the KW stop). Our cruise was 4 nights.

I think the cruise was more stressful then it needed to be (drama with extended family since I was trying to make sure they had a good time too, lack of sleep, etc), but the first thing I did when I got home was look up our next cruise lol! I think our next cruise would be when DD is 4 or older. I also think it would be great if she was more social so she would like the kids clubs and it will definitely be disney!!!! Have you been on a vacation with DS anywhere else? I would love another trip next year, but I'm not sure where a good toddler trip is.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the bedrails would fit on the queen bed. I only read people saying they had them for couch beds.

These are the bed rails they had on the wonder. You can fit 2 side by side on the couch or bed without a gap. I think I broke into a sweat getting them on the bed, but it was worth it ;)

But I did see photos of these on the ship. Not sure if it's on the newer ships. Hope these fit too. If they don't, ask if they have the ones like the photo above.

When I called about the diaper genie, the guy told me they had bed rails that I could request from my room host if I needed one. If DS won't sleep in the PNP, I will request a bed rail. Thx. :)

You're welcome! I stalked the boards here when we were planning our very first cruise...and I was/am so grateful for others answering my endless questions, and giving me tips and such!! :)

We have to wear the life vests during the drill? I had no idea. I've never had to do it on previous cruises (other cruise lines). I'm sure DS will not like that. He hated his snowsuit. He much rather just wear a diaper. Lol

I guess someone posted saying you don't need to wear the vests anymore...I'm sorry for giving you the wrong (un-updated?) info! It was over 10 yrs ago when we first cruised...
