Hi!

Anybody read a good book lately? My favorite thing to do on the cruise is to relax in the sun while reading a great book so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! :)

I am looking for something fun, not too serious. I like Patricia Cornwell, Carl Hiaasen, LOVED the Divinci Code and Angels and Demons, but am not much of a fan of Nora Roberts type books nor the Oprah picks.

Thanks in advance for your help! :teeth:

Here are some authors that I enjoy...

Janet Evanovich - several series, but the Stephanie Plum series is my favorite
Linda Fairstein - series that's a bit similar to Patricia Cornwell
Clive Cussler - has several series
Joanne Fluke - series of mysteries
James Patterson
Diane Mott Davidson - mystery series that are funny (she a caterer who keeps finding dead bodies)
Iris Johansen - another series that has the same type of investigation/suspense of a Cornwell or Patterson

for a very funny book, The Broke Diaries by Angela Nissel (who's now a staff writer for "Scrubs") ... some bad language

Nora Roberts also writes as JD Robb...murder series (not fluffy love stories)

to be scared -- anything by John Saul

I just finished Kiss Me While I Sleep by Linda Howard -- which was also pretty good.

Have fun!!

I too can whole-heartedly recommend JD Robb. She rights the "Death in..." series of futuristic crime stories. She can build a world better than anybody. I typically don't go for crime stories, but I won't miss these.

My last book club book was Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman
It was a big hit in our book club, some said the best book we've read.

I am reading one now that I started on our 3 day Wonder cruise....it is called "A Trip to the Beach" by Robert and Melinda Blanchard.

It is a true story of a couple who gave up their Vermont residence and started a restaurant on the island of Anguilla....very interesting and humorous!!! It chronicles all their trials and tribulations and ultimate joy in working and living on this small, beautiful island!!

Why not start reading the Chronicles of Narnia?

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe...

Also, Frank Peretti has a couple of cool books called Hangman's Curse and Nightmare Academy... their a little scary but a good book where the characters are looking for the Truth...

Could also always read some Tom Clancy.

Thanks,
Paul

I just got the Rule of Four. It is supposed to be along the lines of the DaVinci Code. Haven't started reading, but will do so beginning Saturday.

Especially since this book will be coming out as a move at the end of 2005. WETA workshop is doing a lot of the special effects and characters. These are the folks that did that type of work on the Lord of the Rings movies for Peter Jackson.

There is a book that is a "pre history" of Peter Pan called Peter and the Starcatchers. Sure it's billed as a childrens book (like the Harry Potter series is) but it is a fun, imaginitive book. Kinda big (good for a 7 nighter) but it's also a pretty quick read. Oh the book is written by Dave Barry and "some other guy" (I forgot his name). It is nothing like Dave's weekly columns or most of his other books. This really is a novel.

Couple easy readers - no time at all to finish.

Tuesdays with Morrie or the other one - 5 people You Meet in Heaven.

Also I read The devil wears Prada - funny.

Deception Point was very good. It is written by the same author who wrote the Davinci Code and Angels & Demons. I enjoyed it just as much as the Davinci Code.

If you like historical fiction, The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory is a good read.

If you like mysteries, the Elizabeth George Inspector Lynley series is excellent.

Have a great trip!

I agree with Deception Point being good, Digital Fortress was also pretty good and different from the A&D and Code.

You mentioned that you like Patricia Cornwell so you might enjoy anything by Kathy Reichs. She, like her book's character, Temperance Brennan, is a forensic anthropologist. For me, I have to start reading her books on a Saturday morning because I never want to put it down until I'm finished. I'm cruising on the 14 Day Panama Cruise in May and I am saving her latest novel, Monday Mourning, for our cruise.

Hope you have a great cruise!!

To add to Mickey&JoshNut-- Kathy Reichs is from Charlotte! She actually teaches at UNC-Charlotte. I have heard nothing but good things about her books and plan to take one with me when we cruise next week.

I just wanted to add my choice!

The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde. One of the funniest books I've read in a really long time. It's kind of surreal - main character is a literary detective and goes into Jane Eyre to stop a criminal.

I'm finishing up the second book - Lost in a Good Book. I'll read some fluff next week so I can bring his third book - Well of Lost Plots along with me when I leave Tuesday the 1st!!!!! :Pinkbounc

I've been dying to see my trip countdown. :D

Just had to second the motion for my favorite bounty hunter Stephanie Plum and her hamster!!!

Janet Evanovich - several series, but the Stephanie Plum series is my favorite
