It seems like it would be fun for a family with young children to drive around the All Stars resorts to look at the theming, giant Buzz & Woody, etc. Maybe get out of the car for a short time and check things out.

Is this sort of activity encouraged, tolerated, or verboten? What sort of conversation would we expect with the gate attendant? (Assuming there is a gate.)

I would say to the attendant that you are considering booking this hotel the next time you come and wanted to check it out.
I'm sure they're used to it.

There is a gate. Stay in the left lane. Buses use the right lane. I'm sure that you can show your parking pass and/or room key from your resort and get in with no problem. Haven't tried it, but it makes sense to me.

If the kids are into sports, make sureyou check out the football field and the baseball field-shaped pook at the Sports. Go to the top floor of the walkways (stairs are in the Coca-Cola cup) by the baseball pool for awesome views.

We cruised the resorts one day when we were returning from a cruise (flew in and out of Orlando). We weren't staying anywhere on-site, and we just told the attendants we wanted to see the resorts. They let us through no problem. Disney knows that's great free advertising.

We did this once when we were staying at Carribean Beach. The gate guard just waved us thru the gate. Make sure you have the parking pass in your windshield of course.
