Cruises to Alaska

in response to questions:

we were on the "volendam" and cruised august 4th last year.

regarding our specific dislikes with the cruise, they were largly due to poor or lacking service overall. we have cruised with ncl (who i was'nt all that impressed with) and disney (twice) before. we were used to friendly staff who took care of everything, and if a problem arose were on top of it immediatly. on hal the room stewards seemed to be stretched too thin-if you had a question, request or problem with your room you could not get assistance from anyone other than the steward assigned to you (and if they were on their break, be it 15 minutes or a 2 hour break, you would not recieve assistance from anyone else). the staff at the bars were horrible, most did not know the first thing about very basic bartending (many bar guests would have to return drinks to the bartender and have to explain to them how to make them-scewdrivers and white russians :confused3). alot of things on board just seemed odd-the coffee, espresso area never had anything other than cream available (no milk of any type-said it was'nt their policy to have it there), but the bars had no cream available (used 1% milk for any cocktails that called for cream, again saying it was their policy)???

the kid's club was a major disappointment for us. we knew ahead of time that there was no way it would compare to disney's-but we had heard alot of positive things about "club hal". club hal on our ship was "club nothing". the kids were given navigators at the begining of the cruise that listed the activites for each age group, but with the exception of the teenagers-all of the other groups were in the same room doing the same things all together. the area for the kids was about half the size of a stateroom, had a tv/vcr and 2 computers (neither of which were available for the kids to use more than 4 hours during the entire 7 days). the kids club ran from 9-12, 2-5 and 7-10 (not open during time in ports). if your child did not have sign out privledges and was inclined to want to leave (or got bored and "antsy") you would be instructed to call the kid's club every half hour from whereever you were on board to check in (no pager system).

because we had such positive experiences on disney we thought we might have been "spoiled", and were being overcritical of our experience with hal-until we used their spa services. the staff in the spa was similar to the disney staff-friendly, helpful, genuinly nice. we were so taken aback by the difference between the spa staff and the crew that i finaly questioned some of the spa staff about the big difference in attitude. they all gave me the same response: hal's change in tipping policy. we cruised 2 months following the change in hal's policy to automatic tipping, and we were experiencing what many passengers had remarked to the spa staff regarding-lack of service, lack of pride in customer service...the spa staff were contracted by steiner and not employees of the cruise line, they shared with us that when hal instituted the auto tipping for employees many of the employees had taken the attitude of just doing what you needed to do "to get by" :guilty: .
we also spoke with the director of the kid's program, we had learned that he had previously been a cm on disney. we asked him what the deal was with hal. he told us that hal was pushing publicly to being more "family friendly" and had hired several prior disney cm's with the promise of developing their kid's programs-but had not backed it with any support (he basicly got staff with no training, that did'nt "sign on to work with kids"). he remarked that most of the prior disney c.m.'s left as soon as their contracts with hal expired to go back to disney.

so-as far as hal goes for us: we were not impressed. i don't think that even if we had gone without our kids we would have been impressed. i would never hesitate to cruise alaska again, it is the greatest cruising experience visualy that i could ever imagine (ice flows, glacier bay, whales, the northern lights...), i would just look at the other cruiselines available.

We are probably doing RCCL next year to Alaska if all works out right....but out of Seattle so we can DRIVE to port (like some of you lucky dogs who can already do that in FL for DCL)....after much comparison, it seemed the best choice for my kids and my family as a whole. We were going to do NCL, but their Seattle ship has been having major mechanical problems lately (came in to port on one of 4 engines last week...two have been down for over a month) which makes me leary of going w/them.

GOOD LUCK!

i would love to be able to take a cruise that did not involve air travel! unfortunatly very few cruises depart from san francisco. we hope this will change in the future.

No, there are quite a few cruises out of San Francisco. We are in Sacramento, and not having to fly is why my mom takes so many cruises our of San Francisco, also, the agency she books thru throws in round trip bus transfers from Sacramento to the ship. Celebrities Mercury is her favorite ship out of San Francisco.

Also, thanks for clarifying on HAL. I was afraid the change in tipping policy to automatic tips would degrade things. I'd also be leary of NCL now, even after 2 great cruises with them, because combining FREESTYLE with automatic tips doesn't appeal to me either.

My SIL (who cruises alot) just returned from an Alaskan cruise. When I was asking her for tips - she said be sure to try to get one of the biggest ships..they went on a smaller one and she said they won't do that again.

They went on Norweigen...and wasn't really negative about it - but said they probably wouldn't use them again.

TVGUY - is it possible for the Magic to do mediterranean cruises? We are hoping and waiting anxiously for some new itineraries for Summer 07 - don't know if we can swing airfare for 5 but mediterranean sounds great.

I would suspect it depends on the time of year, if it's warm, I guess they could.

Since the Magic was built in Italy and sailed over to Port Canaveral from there I would think they could cruise the Mediterranean without any trouble. I could be wrong though.

There are 10 day Alaska cruises out of SanFran...I believe on NCL. My parents live there (SF) but will come up here to cruise w/us.

We've been working with Clint for years.

We sailed from Seward, Alaska to Vancouver, BC about 10 years ago - when Holland America and Princess were about the only two mainstream cruiselines that were in Alaska. We enjoyed Princess, and have sailed with them in recent years. Our next non-Disney cruise will probably be Royal Caribbean.

Hey Chris!

Great minds are thinking alike. We are also looking into Alaska for next year. Let me know what you guys decide and maybe we could get together again.

It is so hard to believe that the Magic is on its way back to FL; seems like only yesterday we were getting on the ship.

Hope you all had a great summer (it sure went by fast for us). Boys started back to school on the 15th.

I'm looking into doing an Alaskan cruise in 2007! I'd love to go next summer, but my DH and I went on a Baltic cruise this summer with Royal Caribbean, and we have 2 kids in college this fall, so no vacation next year. :(

I bought Frommer's Alaska 2005, and I've been reading everything I can about Alaska here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55

Many people (at least at CruiseCritic.com!) say that the itinerary is more important than the ship for an Alaskan cruise. You need to decide if you want to do a roundtrip cruise (Inside Passage) from Seattle or Vancouver (or even San Francisco), or a one-way northbound or southbound. I want to do a northbound out of Vancouver because I'd like to spend a few days traveling in Alaska on my own after the cruise ends. I am leaning towards Royal Caribbean or Celebrity because I like their 2006 itineraries - which could certainly change in 2007. Others prefer Princess, HAL and Norwegian because some of their ships sail to Glacier Bay.

My very first cruise was on HAL, and while their kids' program may be very good, they tend to sail with a lot of older people. I much preferred my two Royal Caribbean cruises.

Thanks to everyone for your info. I wish Disney would do Alaska because I'm afraid I've been spoiled and I don't want to be disappointed. After DCL Western Carribean last year and going on DCL Eastern this year, I've had to promise my husband that Alaska can be next year. It is so much harder to plan Alaska because there are so many different ships & itineraries.

.

I've got 2 kids, 4 years apart, one just started college. No fancy vacation last year or this year, or for the next 8 years at least..........and lots of mac and cheese, rice, hot dogs and ground beef on the dinner table.
Oh, well, I've warned them that mom and I expect them to return the favor when we are old and gray (okay, older and grayer).

OMG! How fun would that be for our boys to do Alaska together next year! I am still trying to convince my DH that he wants to be locked onto a boat w/his in-laws for a week, but definitely have him leaning toward Alaska.

I have searched out a number of cruise lines and definitely think our best bet at this point is with RCCL since they have more "stuff" and go from where I want them to go from (Seattle...I can DRIVE to port!). We are still up in the air as to when to go over the summer, though since we know both DH and I will have some major job changes over this coming year.

When were you thinking of going? I was debating that third week of June (summer solstice) as I had a girlfriend go on NCL last year at that time and said it was incredible...or early Aug (most likely time DH can get off). GGG and Grammie would come w/us again.

Gail-Do you notice that one cute boy in my sig line....he's not mine! Give ALL your boys big hugs from us!
Chris
