Cruisers with stomach problems

I'm going to try and keep this message short and to the point. In a prior thread, there was some discussion about cruisers who had prior medical conditions that could make them suspect for the Norwalk virus. My daughter is one of them, having been on chemotherapy for the past 16 months.

I contacted DCL before our cruise, and was reassured that with our medical information in hand, there should be no problem if Dani was to have some stomach trouble.

This did not turn out to be the case. She threw up twice on Sunday, and we were quarantined for 48 hours. There is no room for flexibility at all at this point - if you throw up, you're isolated. I honestly don't think this would've happened in a few months, and while I do understand why it happened to us, it was very very disappointing.

My point is - if you think you may have symptoms of the virus, you may want to postpone your cruise until the issue of the virus has died down.

I remember reading about your concerns regarding your daughter and the possibility of them mistaking her condition for the virus and quarantining. I hope the rest of your trip went well, although I'm sure it couldn't make up for the lost days.

I would definetly write a letter to DCL explaining about your inquiries before the cruise, and then how you were treated on the ship. Maybe this instance can help someone else in the future.

I hope your daughter is feeling better and everything will go smoothly for her from now on!

Laura and family,

I feel your pain and I am so very sorry that another innocent person has had to suffer Disney's over zealous reaction. My heart goes out for your daughter and family's disappointment.

I know all too well how it feels to have a damper put on a wonderful vacation,
thru no fault of your own, that you've dreamed of for so long.
My best to you all ~ God Bless and {hugs} to Dani ^i^

DANIES MOM-Wow, i am so sorry that happened to you, as i do remember you posting about it before your cruise. I would certainly write a letter, as you did make the proper inquiries before your trip.

4NANA-GREAT family pic from your cruise!!

Dani's mom....I did hear that you were quarantined from another DIS'er onboard but I did not know the circumstances. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. May I ask a question....did someone from DCL see her throw up and report her??? just wanted to know how zealous DCL really is. Thanks.

I also just wanted to say that my son Brian and his friend Kyle hung out with Dani quite a bit on the cruise and enjoyed her company very much. They said she was a very nice girl. I hope the rest of the cruise proved to be better for you all.

MJ,

I didn't realize Brian was your son - I should've put two and two together I guess! Dani had so much fun with them and the other teens and she really did have a great time. I'm going to try and get the picture of Brian, Kyle, Shaylee and Dani scanned and posted on her website - I'll let you know if that happens. It is a gorgeous picture with them all decked out!

I took her down to the infirmary in the afternoon. She was feeling nauseous still and I had to make sure it wasn't something serious. In my opinion, the crew (except for the infirmary) is not all that interested, since Dani didn't make it to the infirmary but threw up outside the elevators, and two employees that I saw walked right past without offering any assistance or anything.

I intend to write a letter - can someone give me the information on where to send a letter so it will get read? Thanks.

Laura

Dani's Mom - I'm so sorry to hear that you were quarantined. I spoke to you very briefly just before the ship left port, but didn't see you again for the rest of the cruise. (I thought that people with bubbles were possible Dissers, and when I saw the nametags, I knew for sure.) It's hard to believe that you still had problems even after contacting DCL prior to the cruise. I'm glad to hear that Dani still had a great time, though.

The info I was given for correspondence:

I would also like you know that I read Dani's story on her
website. You have a beautiful daughter and I am glad thru MAW she could enjoy at least a few days of Magic! I have witnessed the faith and courage it takes one to battle the daily struggles of this terrible illness. I wish her continued good heath in the future
and will you keep your family in my thoughts and prayers ^i^.

Laura.....I would love to see the pic of the 4 of them if you get it posted to the website!!!! Seeing Brian all dressed up is such a treat for us since he lives in jeans and t-shirts every day!!!! We bought a few of the formal pics of him and Kyle.

We did not see much of Brian and Kyle the whole cruise....only at dinner but I know they really had a good time with the girls.

I'm glad Dani still had a terrific and memorable trip!:D

I hope you thought enough to send a letter to DCL explaining the situation and how it was handled inappropriately PLUS also notifying MAW of the incident. I would imagine that most of the kids they send on the cruise could have the same issues that your daughter had.

Dani's mom--I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I hope and pray that your dd does well.

How do they (DCL) find out that people have thrown up? Was it in a public spot?

Dani's mom, I was on that cruise, too--and I threw up (all over my tray) at breakfast on "Grand Cayman" day! A CM asked if I needed anything, I mentioned that I was pregnant and also prone to motion sickness, and no one said another thing to me about it! So, I'm wondering what set off your quarantine. I did end up spending most of that day sleeping--I just felt awful. How horrible for Dani that they stuck her in her room on her special cruise!

Laura, how awful for you on your trip! I was thinking about you and your family hoping that you were having a wonderful time.

Keep us updated on Dani's situation, and again if you ever are in Iowa City at the University, and you would need something, don't hesitate to let me know!

take care. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers!

Thanks everyone for your support - I was a little hesitant in posting for fear of someone taking it wrong - we still had a wonderful time - someone said it perfectly - a bad day cruising is still better than a good day at home!

I have posted a couple of pictures from the cruise on Dani's website - including one of Dani with Shaylee, Brian and Kyle. If anyone is interested, the addy is http://www.caringbridge.com/ia/danisdiary

Still have so much catching up to do!

Laura

Laura...the pics look great!!!! Brian is on his way from school for lunch and I can't wait to show him!!!!

Hopefully I will have my pics added to my trip report over the weekend.

Hi Laura,

I'm glad you all made it home okay. It was great meeting you all on the cruise. I have been in touch with dcl regarding another matter but the two ways I know of to contact them are:

dcl.guest.communications@disneycruise.com
or
Disney Cruise Vacations
Guest Communications
PO Box 10238
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-0328

They said the email they receive will be delivered to the proper department.

The picture of the kids looks great. It's wonderful that they all got along so great. Shaylee will be calling Dani sometime this weekend.
