Cruise to Bermuda....

Has anyone done a cruise to Bermuda. A few families are thinking of going next summer for all of our daughters' 16th birthdays. We would leave right from NY or NJ so no airfare but I was looking up some prices and they seema bit steep to me. We would need 2 cabins b/c we are a family of 5. A few of the families are so we could split the cost of another cabin with them. Anyway, the rate I figured out was about $6200 Is that high for a week long cruise? Any tips?

Depends on when you are going but $6200 does seem high for a cruise to Bermuda for two cabins for five people. What type of staterooms were you looking at?

I often use cruisecompete.com to have TA's give me the best prices, or the best onboard credit. Even at the more expensive prices for this time of year (you are going at high time) this seems high if you are looking for inside rooms. The Dawn (NCL) is nice out of NY. What cruiseline are you looking for, and what type of rooms, and which week?

Thanks for the replies We are looking at the last week of June and I think a cabin with a balcony or at least an oceanview. I really don't want an inside cabin I don't think. I've only been on one other cruise and that was when I was young and single so we didn't care what the room was like, lol. I'm not picky about the cruise line.

I have cruised to Bermuda before. Pricing is high during most summer weeks. They start to trend down in August (hurricane season). Also, you will find a difference in pricing depending on the cruiseline. Royal Caribbean is much cheaper than, say, Holland America.

Are you trying to get two balconies? If you're getting two rooms, you may want to book one of them as an inside cabin (maybe the 16 year olds can have that one. They aren't too impressed with the fancy room anyway). And if you're trying to save money, the adults can do an outside room without the balcony.

In answer to your question, that price seems to be about normal for a summer cruise for two rooms.

We're booked for a 7 day cruise out of NYC next November, and it is costing us close to $5000 for the 7 of us (2 balconies). We've cruised out of NYC before, and yes, it costs more than out of Florida, especially during the summer, but it's well worth it for the convinience, and not having to pay airfare. I'm guessing ships sail full during the summer months here.

I just took a 5 night to Bermuda out of NJ on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas in late April. Awesome ship with so much for everyone to do.

I paid under $500 per person for a balcony on deck 8. Went with my parents and my sister....left dh and the kids at home.

What I did was keep my eyes open for a deal which I saw in late February. I booked it and then kept watching the prices. It dropped and instead of keeping the inside cabin, we moved to a balcony. Then they had a residence special which lowered the rate even more and we wound up getting a $50 shipboard credit.

So my advice would be to start watching the fares...daily and then book when you see a deal. The prices you've quoted seem outrageous to me.

After my Bermuda cruise, I came home and our friends asked us to do a 9 night Thanksgiving cruise on the same ship...Explorer. We are a family of 5 and are paying under $3500 for 9 nights!!! We have 2 inside cabins. So definitely keep watching the prices...I know you can find better rates....but you may have to wait a bit to book it.

We're going on one next year on Holland America. It's more expensive than RCCL because it is two more days and there aren't that many balcony cabins, so if you want a balcony it's $$$$. And cruises out of NYC seem to be much higher than those out of FL.

If you really want an ocean view or balcony, get one for yourself and an inside cabin across the hall for the kids.

I doubt they are going to find prices nearly as low as what you paid at the end of June, when all of the NJ/NY kids are on summer break.

A lot of the very new ships were ordered prior to the recession so to recoup the loss, they had to go forward with the purchase and put them on line. As a result a lot of passengers want to be on those brand new ships and not the "old ships" like the Voyager and the Explorer. Of course there is nothing old about them but the prices are usually great, particularly now.

I just sailed to Bermuda June 27 - July 4. We were on HAL Veendam out of NY and paid $4000 for 2 in a verandah cabin. There was a pretty big difference between the cost of an ocean view cabin and a verandah. Our week also had a fairly high cost... schools are out and Bermuda weather is heating up in June.

I agree with others about getting an inside cabin for the teens. We did that on our Hawaii cruise a couple of years ago. DDs had an inside and DH and I had the verandah.

I would say 6k is high for 9 nights..i just got off the explorer today (royal caribbean)...9 night cruise, 2 of us in a promenade room --899 each..plus 3/4 person in the room is cheaper than the first 2
