Cruise ship innovations

I always thought DCL had it going on with the slides but seems like that is much more common place on other cruise ships.................along with rock climbing, surfing, water parks, etc.

Disney's ships are not innovated by any measure, but they definitely excel at customer service and family entertainment.

I have to say, for my kids ages, we may need to start venturing out to other cruise lines to keep them entertained. I love DCL but the smaller classic ships don't offer enough for my kids/teens and the Dream class ships...one only does shorter cruises to the Bahamas (yuck) and the other does the same itineraries, over and over! I can't wait until the new ships come out to see what they offer (fingers crossed we can afford them).

As an aside, I was watching the show, Mighty Ships, on how they built NCL Breakaway...geesh! Why is it they can build that massive ship in so little time and it's taking DCL how long to build it's next 2 ships (we don't even have a name yet on the ship that's supposedly to be released in 2019)?? :confused3Theoretical question only, not trying to incite a huge riot on the thread

From my understanding, there are only a couple ship builders in the world that are capable of such a huge project and "reservations" are made years in advance. It's not that Disney ships take longer to build, it's that other cruise lines are ahead of them for the ship builders.

New ships are scheduled for 2021 and 2023

It's not the actual building that's taking so long - they haven't even been started yet. Disney's favorite shipyard, Meyer Werft, is booked solid, so DCL is just waiting for its turn.

This was a neat article, though I dislike slideshow presentations of the data. Disney's fleet is a bit older than some of the new innovations on recent builds, so that is tough to compare. Disney pioneered virtual portholes, magic paintings, magic bands (though not at sea), water coaster, and fireworks at sea.

Some of the other activities are a product of large ship designs (bumper cars, carousel, multiple story water slides). Other amenities are just really well thought out, like some of the lounges and atrium's, robot bar tenders, locations of things. Also various room decor based on location, like the spa suites, havana suites, etc. Not sure I need real grass at sea, but a novel concept. Basketball courts and pingpong aren't exactly top deck activities, especially with the wind.

I really hope to see some real imaginative innovation with the new Disney ships because I think they are falling behind in what is offered. I assume Disney may have looked at some of the items seen on other ships and decided that either maintenance or guest through-put are not good enough for them.

I think 'Innovation' takes on many different flavors. While many see the outward, visible, entertaining innovations, we have to remember that DCL is innovative in other ways that other cruise lines are not - such as building ships that are better for the environment when in operation (waste/sewage treatment, fuel efficiency, lower air polluting emissions.) Disney consistently outscores other cruise lines in this category by a mile.

Is it sexy? No. Is it still innovative? Yeah, I say so. But I'm a scientist so I guess my views are a bit slanted.

Great point. Even then, 13 of 73 upcoming cruise ships are Liquified natural gas.
