Cruise Ship Drowning

A young boy drowned on a Carnival Cruise Ship. DH saddened by the news told me this am. Prayers for the family.

Yes, it's a very sad thing to have happened.

I don't think any cruise line (at least not the major ones like Carnival, Disney, Royal, Celebrity, etc.) have lifeguards at the pools so it's up to the parents to watch their kids. I didn't hear the whole story so don't know if the parents were "right there" or what really happened but I feel very bad for them, it's heartbreaking.

Reports on the DCL board are that they have just recently started having lifeguards on Disney ships.

Sad that the child died. A parent should be within an arms length of a young swimmer even if there is a lifeguard present.

My vision of cruise ship pools comes from videos and pics I've seen. They seem to often be very crowded, with lots of activity and noise....much more than a normal pool. It would seem very hard for a lifeguard to do as good a job there as he/she could do at a normal pool. I think ships may not have lifeguards because they recognize this and do not want to assume legal
responsibility for the safety of swimmers under these circumstances.

In any case, at 6 y.o., the parents are ultimately the ones who should be basically next to the child. I've seen kids go under in pools and it is scary how fast it happens.

THIS. On our first cruise I was shocked at the amount of activity in the pools. Adults were cannon-balling, kids were diving. And the pool wasn't very big, maybe 15' x 10'. I bet there were 50 people in it. No way would I have allowed my child to jump in there!
