Got back from the cruise and am now back at work...such is life...

Instead of a traditional trip report, I have offered some observations and memories of the trip. By far the best recreational activity on the ship is people-watching, so my comments and memories are triggered my by the people that I experienced while on-board.

Arrived in Orlando early in the morning on Friday, had breakfast at the airport and headed off to the WDW. Parked at Epcot and monorailed over to The Magic Kingdom to see if Stitch's Great Escape was previewing. As luck would have it, we were able to get in to see Stitch. Absolutely great. It was so much friendlier than Alien Encounter and really captured the essence of the movie and the character of Stitch. I did notice an Imagineer or two monitoring the audience reaction. Kudos...great attraction.

After The Magic Kingdom, we monorailed back over to Epcot for a little Food and Wine festivities. I noticed a stark difference in the type of guest that visits Epcot and The Magic Kingdom. MK - Mullets Galore.....Epcot - 30-somethings after dark. We ate dinner in China and then headed back to the airport.

The pre-boarding process at the hotel on Saturday was great. The older cast members dealt with the guests very well. Bob, I think his name was, gave the best advice to a family that was freaking out about every thing they were doing (asking questions twice, not paying attention, etc). Bob said, "You're on vacation, let us worry for you." Bus to the port and then we boarded the ship earlier than expected and made Palo and spa reservations without a hassle. Days and times we wanted were available. For the adult travellers, definitely visit Quiet Cove bar while waiting for your stateroom. Very few guests find this secluded bar. While we downed our first fruity drinks of the cruise, other couples wandered in and out. It was a nice chance to briefly visit with some of the people on board and get to know the bar staff (which can be crucial!).

The first days of travelling were rough seas...even the crew were feeling the impact of the ocean. No sickness, just some minor woozies.

A few days into the cruise was formal night which is a spectacle to behold. Almost everyone is in tuxes, suits and/or their finest gowns with little girls in Princess dresses which are just way too precious. The highlight of the evening was watching parents freak out about their children ruining their dresses or suits. There is something about watching an over-weight woman in an evening gown yelling at her children about how much she paid to have her hair done on board the ship and exclaiming something like, "You need to act like a lady when you are wearing a dress!" that is hysterically funny...The irony is amazing. I did notice a few too many parents not having fun on the cruise...which was sad. On the first evening, as I was dressing for dinner, I could hear father next door screaming about how much he had paid for the cruise and how much his children didn't appreciate it. He finally excalimed that his vacation was ruined because of something his children had done and that they had no idea how much he had to sacrifice to get them on board. He left the room after that...we heard very little from our neighbords after that night.

People-watching...Rene of the Cruise Activities cast was amazing. This girl has way too much energy all the time and the best smile. I don't know where she gets it from. Whether she was dancing on Pirate Night or during 70s and 80s night she was at the top of her game. Good for her!

People-watching...The little kids in the Promenade Lounge dancing to High Society's funky music was one of the cruise highlights. These kids danced like there was no-one watching and they had no cares in the world. When do we start to become so self-aware that we stop dancing?

More to come...

I observed under-weight women yelling as well ...

That is a good point to remember: We are on vacation, if the kids don't want to do as planned 27/7, then we need to remember this is vacation. DO NOTHING, and it will still be great, we are with Disney, remember !!!!! I cannot wait to be sitting in a lounge chair doing nothing, people watching !!!!! But, now I want to hear about the food. Palo's.................. Do tell!

yep...we are people watchers too! Please tell more..can't wait til we go next June!

The food at Palo is, of course amazing, as is the food on the ship in general. Our dining mates were not able to get a reservation at Palo, however, we were fortunate enough to be able to increase our reservation so that they could come with us.

We ate at Palo on Pirate night, so missed some of the festivities from the dining rooms. Our server did bring everyone the Pirate headbands though...but didn't insist that we put them on.

The Filet Mignon was superb: juicey, flavorful and had that melt-in-your-mouth quality that everyone loves. The chocolate souffle is a must...even if you don't think you'll like it order one and decide when it arrives (you have to order it before the main course...don't worry the waiter will ask you). Any of the flatbread pizza appetizers are wonderful as well. Also, don't be shy...it's just like the main dining rooms....if you want two appetizers or desserts...just ask! Our waiter was Kristof from Croatia and he was great. He had the same philosophy as Bob in my earlier post: "Let me do the worrying for you." Which is what his comment was when we were trying to decide on a wine. He brought and excellent bottle.

People-watching...As is no surprise, people have very different ideas about what dining attire is on a cruise ship (which has been the subject of many posts). For the most part everyone in Palo was dressed appropriately....for the most part. There was the one woman who believed that dressing up was wearing the nice jeans and the puffy paint, splattered t-shirt. And that may have very well been dressed up.

People-watching...About half way through our meal, I noticed this mass of feathers walking behind the bar in the restaurant (fyi you don't need reservations to sit at the bar and have a drink, although I don't think they will serve you food, but it never hurts to ask). To our surprise it was our head server/maitre dei from our dining rotation. She was dressed in a great pirate costume complete with enormous feather adorned captains head. She gave us a huge smile and a wave when she saw us.

Absolutely! Another observation:

Fairly early in the cruise there was a line of people waiting to see the entourage of characters that they bring out for an autograph session (I think it was the fab 5 they were bringing out in their sailor suits). Sitting in the lounge area in front of guest services, we had prime people-watching spots.

At one point, a young, under-weight woman with a daughter of about 7ish asked her husband to get a shirt from their cabin for their daughter who was wearing her bathing suit. He returned a few minutes later with a cover-up type robe for her. The mother then began to rip into her husband about how it was the wrong shirt and how incompetent he was. The argument went on for a few moments before the little girl finally walked away from them. She came and sat down on the couch near us. The look on her face was priceless - somewhere between "get over it", "here we go again" and "god, this is so embarassing". It was a few minutes before they realized she had walked away.

I saw this woman several times throughout the week, probably more than I cared for. Every time I saw her she had a scowl and something was wrong. I personally think that something wrong was a bad dye-job and poor make-up...but that's another post entirely!

After something like that happens, I always notice that person or persons everywhere. I hate that. Its like you stop noticing the good people and notice all those people that make you wonder about humanity from then on.

I think you missed GrayFal's point, stitch.

I'm enjoying reading about your experience of the same cruise, Stitch, but am a bit uncomfortable with your people-watching "observations". seem more like character judgments.

I know what you mean about the woman ripping into her husband, but I also feel some empathy for that threesome.{That shirt bickering incident sounds extreme enough to indicate a deeper conflict there. :( } My family truly had a wonderful vacation/cruise. But we did come across some stressful moments, and I'm still trying to figure out why certain "little things" seemed to come to a head on vacation!

There's nothing quite so exhilarating as pointing out the shortcomings of others....

Oh my: People watching.... can be so fun .....

To each his own.

But I hate the "seeing something" that you don't to..and it will make you feel uncomfortable the rest of the time on the cruise and you can't help BUT feel bad, like knowing that this person is a DISer and then seeing them fight right in front of me. It was just a "stressfull" situation at the moment, but I "hearted" the DH right then because I had gotten to know him on line and I felt so sorry for him because like all of us, we had waited so long and you to see a hurt face, it was all like "awwwww". And I never went up to him to introduce myself. I was too embarrassed for him. It was that obvious. Like the above poster said, you then always "notice" them. I HATE that. We all think things will go smoothly, but we are not perfect.

But it is hard to miss the obvious.....what is it with watching other couples arguing.,....... I guess to me it's like "look honey.......see.....it's just not me...and I DO NOT yell as loud as her" ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Well, I know I felt bad because that had been my DH and I one time in Vegas....... I deserve all the "butt of all fighting jokes" that come my way because of that. Maybe that is why I felt so bad.

Oh well, to each his own, if we were perfect, we wouldn't have anything to look at while standing in all those long lines at Disneyland. ;)

;) :hyper:

We spent 10 glorious days in WDW last June with our two DDs; 5 & 7 at the time. Long before our trip, I kept telling them that Vacation was a "no Fight Zone". And that went for daddy and I too... You know it worked! Not once did my girls get into a spat and not once did either of the so called adults (me and dh) yell at them or each other. If things started to get a little tense, we just reminded everyone about the no fight zone and a compromise was reached. I HATE hearing other people fight or yell at kids. embarasses me and reminds me how much I hate myself (later)when I do yell.

Your observations are wonderful! We go on our first Disney cruise (first cruise ever) Dec 10, 2005. I want to hear about what people where wearing, the best food, what didn't you bring that you wished you had? Any Do Not Miss activities?

Thanks so much for sharing.

Ouch! Are you sure you're a guy? There's something about these types of comments in your posts that makes me want to say, "meow!"

A little compassion for others can go a long way. As the mother of two young ones under 4, there are times I'm certainly not at my best. I can only hope you're not one of my witnesses at those times....

I love people watching!

I personally liked your MK = Mullet!!!

I liked the one posters idea of the No Fighting Zone - my family needs to use that on our next vacation!
