Cruise Number 8 and Counting-Finally! Friday CC!

Tuesday morning was leisurely in starting for our cabin. DH, DD & DS had an excursion but not until 11. DGM & DF were off early for the Turtle Farm & Grand Cayman Island tour. So we wandered to breakfast at Topsiders and took our time there. Then they were off to their Pirate encounter! pirate: We had seen the pirate ship in port before and experienced it ‘shooting’ at the ship. DH thought it looked pretty fun and it was inexpensive too as far as excursions go. They tendered to a new docking area on Grand Cayman which was very nice. Then they were tendered out to the Pirate Ship. There were four crew members, The Captain, Wench Mary, The gunman and Bones who were fun, informative and piratey! Anyone under 20 (the runts) got sent down to swab the deck with rags and brushes. Then the Captain yelled there was something missing, pulled a bucket of water out of the ocean and dumped it on them! DD was glad to be 21! The new hands had their teeth checked, their muscles (DS was accused of bringing illegal ‘guns’ on board) and generally harassed. They sailed for awhile shooting on the neighboring ships. When they fired on the Magic one little boy got very upset yelling, “that’s my ship! Don’t sink that. We have to go back on there!” Then they anchored in the ocean , yelled pool's open, and all were allowed to swim. They could either climb down a ladder (wimpy), walk the plank, or jump off the top of the back of the ship! Our crew chose the top of the ship! They said the water was awesome and they had a great time.

DW stayed behind and read on deck 4 overlooking the ocean until DGM got back from her tour. There was a crew lifeboat training session going on near where she was sitting and it was neat to watch. (Did you know the emergency knives they are issued have no points in case they are accidentally dropped in the inflatable rafts? Glad someone thought of that!) The crew seemed to have great camaraderie and the leader of the drill was great. DGM , DF and DW then hit Lumiere’s for lunch (Yummy) and then off to the Rainforest room where they spent a couple hours just relaxing and talking. A luxury for the two of them.:chat:

The buccaneers returned and DH & DS went off to watch Bolt in 3-D in the Buena Vista Theater which has been upgraded with all sorts of new technology that DH said was really pretty cool. popcorn::

After we got ready for the show and dinner DH and DD ran out to get some character pics (Did I mention how totally into it she was this trip? It was a joy to see her having so much fun!) Then off to Twice Charmed. Twice Charmed has really grown on us and the fact that it is an almost 100% original production is even cooler. The effects in that show are quite impressive, we often have to remind ourselves that we’re not at a Broadway theatre but on a ship at sea. Once again we found the cast totally committed to these performances and giving them their all. DGM and DF were quite impressed with the show.

Tonight was dinner at PALO! So DS decided he would go to the family cabaret to see Jeff Civilico on his own AND go to dinner on his own. Having been on the ship almost every year since he was 4, he is VERY comfortable on board. He loves Jeff Civilico’s crazy juggling and physical comedy. And he had a nice time with Sompong and Richard; ordered steak yet again, and treated them to some of his napkin folding prowess! The next day we were stopped in the hallway outside Sessions by a man who sat near us in the dining room and received some very nice compliments on DS’s very good behavior. So I guess he’s not full on teen yet!

We had a 7:30 reservation at PALO and once again had Oana for our server. She has only been up there two months but she already had that PALO knack of knowing what we should try, what we would like, and just how much of it to bring. If you don’t know, they will bring out smaller portions for you to try. Each thing we tried was better than the last, from the very beginning to the very end. And she had heard us talking about it being DH’s birthday and brought him out a little surprise too.

IMG_0167-1.jpg

They are all so attentive! We didn’t leave there until nearly 10:30! But we really enjoyed the relaxing dinner. We did get called away from the table by DS at the door. He came to ask if he could go to the movie since it would be over later than his curfew. No problem! A couple of us went down and caught a little of Michele Lauziere’s adult cabaret act, then DH & DW stayed to dance to the ‘Decades” theme party. We figured we’d at least know some of the songs from the beginning of the night!
And thus ended our midway through the cruise day!

I am enjoying your TR! Thanks for sharing. The pirate adventure looks like a lot of fun. For a second thought about taking my DS and DD on that BUT I told my kids about the pirate party on our upcoming cruise last night and DS (he is 4) asked "are they real pirates?". Getting in the spirit of things, I did what any Mommy would and said "yes, they are" -- OH..NO...he started freaking out. He said "I dont' want real pirates, pirates are BAD BAD BAD". DD (she is 7) bailed me out by saying "Oh, they are Good Pirates! " I then chimed in that Pirate Mickey, and Minnie would be there and that seemed to comfort him. I think he would FREAK out on the pirate ship! Maybe next trip
Keep the details coming -- it is fun to read!

Could be a good idea to wait. One little girl on our excursion was very touchy. One of the pirates made as if he was going to throw her overboard and she freaked out. He could not make up to her and she was pretty much a mess the rest of the time. Another comfort for your DS is that the pirates at the party don't really come out among the guest and "play" they are mostly dancing.

I'm falling behind Gayle in my reading, I need to catch up!!! ;)

We have booked the Pirate excursion in Grand Cayman- it looks like alot of fun!! Also- where did you get your key lime pie on a stick- sounds soooo good!

A trip to the Blonde Giraffe will satisfy all your key lime needs! From the frozen (chocolate dipped) pie on a stick, to pies, candies, and juice to bring home. Great stop to make. They may have actually been featured on the Food Network at some point as well.

All caught up!!! ;)

You are doing a GREAT JOB Gayle!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

:sunny: Wednesday was another beautiful day weather- wise. It seems once we left Florida we were all warmed up. Today was DH, DD and DS’s turns to lounge on the ship while DW left for an excursion with DGM. But not before she had her next spa appt with DD for their pedicures bright and early at 9:45. First she met DGM in Lumiere’s for breakfast – one of her favorite things on the ship. DW would much rather be waited on that do a buffet while on vacation! Eggs Benedict done perfectly! The pedicure was every bit as nice – maybe more so than the manicure – as our feet can always use more TLC. Then a short trip to introduce DD to the Rainforest room. She fell in love with it too. Just the wonderful quiet and calm in there is almost enough to make it worth it.

DW reluctantly left the spa to grab some fruit for lunch before her San Gervasio ruins and Cozumel Island tour. She found DH in his new perch at the adult pool, which was recently renovated in dry dock. The new padded teak loungers and new hot tubs with waterfalls were really nice.
IMG_0186-1.jpg

DW met up with DGM at the Promenade lounge and they were led to their excursion by none other than Trevor. He seemed to be everywhere! A short trip down the pier and through the mall area to the buses and we were on our way. DW had been to the ruins before but it was 6 years ago and since DGM was going alone she decided to join her. It was a slightly different tour, more island and shopping then last time, and no beach stop. The ruins are not the spectacular pyramids you see on other tours, but are a very important historical site. All the Mayans were required to make a pilgrimage to this spot at least once in their lives and it was a site for fertility rituals and weddings. The bus tour around the island after the ruins tour really highlighted the beautiful coastline. And as always, we had a great tour guide, David, who seemed to know a bit about everything. We made a couple of stops and DW and DGM were able to find more than a few things to purchase! And in the mall on the way back DW picked up all the Mexican vanilla she had been requested to bring home. It really is different and delicious in all her baking! Highly recommended!

Tonight was movie night in the Walt Disney Theater and they were showing Bedtime Stories. We all scattered a bit and did different things until it was time to get ready for Pirate Dinner. Everyone participated this year and we all looked great at our table if we do say so ourselves. DD and DW commiserated that the music playing at dinner made them miss John C. again :sad1: – he always made pirate night even more fun! But we were all up dancing and singing with Richard and Joyce and we had a great time before we even went up to the real party! One of the major highlights of the week is always the Pirate Party. pirate: Man that cruise staff really gets a work out that night! The party was great. When it started the winds seemed a little high and we were a little concerned that the fire works might not be able to go off. However, the captain changed the direction of the ship, heading back toward Cozumel which changed the effect of the winds on the ship and the fire works went off beautifully. I think they’ve improved them from last year. We also noticed that the buffet seemed more extensive. We’re pretty sure that when we were on last February they didn’t have a crepe station like they did this year. We’re usually pretty full from dinner, as we have late seating, but DH always makes room for a turkey leg. DGM and DF were quite impressed with the whole deal – especially the pirates scaling down the front of the jumbo screen and Pirate Mickey flying in to the rescue! And of course – the only fireworks at sea (except for the Wonder ;) ) What a great night!

I am definately going there when we go to Key West!!

We woke to another beautiful day weather-wise. We could not have had better weather if we custom ordered it! And we had a whole day to relax and enjoy it! :cloud9: After breakfast we all went our separate ways. DH & DD off to lounge in the sun (they had a mission to accomplish you might remember – that of making everyone back home jealous of their mid-winter tans!) DS went off to Ocean Quest and his new friends. DGM and DW attended the Art of Entertaining series ‘signature entrée' followed by the napkin folding. Chef Clive showed us how to make a ratatouille stuffed chicken breast with potatoes. And we were also educated by the sommelier on how to pair wines and were given samples of all. Mmm Mmm good! We also received the recipes – so we will be trying some new dishes at home. DW always enjoys these whenever she can fit them into the schedule. The Galley Tour was missed this year due to having High Tea at Palo scheduled at the same time. But it is definitely something worth trying to do!

Today was seafood buffet and we thought we were all going to meet at Parrot Cay. But DGM & DW ended up alone and DH continued his quest for color up on deck 9. DGM really enjoyed the sushi offerings. And of course the shrimp and chowder were excellent as well. We tried to keep it light, knowing that we had tea at 3 o’clock.

AT 1:00 we did meet up with DH at Disney Innovations. A talk in the Buena Vista Theater about the top ten innovations Disney has introduced to the Theme Park industry. Once again we were hosted by Trevor who demonstrated yet again his vast knowledge of all things Disney. The concept of a single entrance to parks – Disney; The hub and spoke concept of park design – Disney; and on it went. There were a lot of things we didn’t know came first from Disney. It was a very interesting talk. Another one we would highly recommend.

After that we went and got ready to go to tea. DGM and DF had obviously never been, so it was another new thing to share. For this we had the famous Sasha as our server. He was indeed all we’d heard; Very charming, but extremely humble and sweet. I think he told us he had three (or four?) girls at home and we teased him that it was no wonder he went to sea! Everyone enjoyed the tea they chose and all the sandwiches were delicious. Luckily everyone had their own favorite so it worked out great with what he brought out. We had a lot of desserts left over and he insisted on sending them away with us. When he brought the plates back they had twice as many desserts as when he took them away! It was a beautiful bright afternoon and the view from up there was spectacular. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Right after this DH decided he would take the Art of the Theme Show ship tour since we had learned new things on the tour the other day, and the rest of us went to walk off our ‘tea’!

This was Semi formal night so we did our best to dress for the occasion. First stop Disney Dreams. If we had to pick a favorite show, Disney Dreams is the sentimental front runner. :lovestruc We have been in love with this show since our first cruise in 2000. The enhancements added over the years have only made it more impressive, and there were some cool ones even since last year.
During the week we made contact with as many of the main stage cast members as we could, they escort the characters to appearances, to let them know just how much we were enjoying the shows and their work. They were all very gracious and each one of them told us how much fun they were having, which reflected in their performances.

We got a kick out of just how much stuff got shot at us or dropped from the ceilings through out the week at the shows and other venues. There were streamers, bubbles, confetti, Mickey heads, and even snow!:cold:

This performance of ‘Dreams’ certainly was amazing, and DW was in tears as usual. DGM and DF really enjoyed this one too. We headed to Rockin’ Bar D for the family cabaret show, then out for dinner. DH and DS slipped out for a formal pic which came out very nice!
cruise2009shipfotos003-1.jpg

This was lobster night – almost everyone’s favorite. We know it is at our table. And unless we’re mistaken they seemed to be a little bigger than in the past. Which made DH happy since DS and DD couldn’t finish theirs and passed them on over!

Josh was full after dinner so when Sammy asked him what he wanted for dessert his response was “I’m fine”. You can imagine what happened next…
IMG_0242-1.jpg

We waddled off to Jeff Civilico’s adult cabaret. He is so funny! And he told us he made the cut and will appear on American Gladiators sometime this summer. So we will have to look for him (though that is not our regularly scheduled programming!) He has such amazing muscle control I can’t imagine him not doing pretty well. It will be fun to see!

Midnight Dessert Buffet! One of the only drawbacks I can think of for us to late dining is this! No room for the dessert buffet. I have only ever managed to take pictures. DH occasionally can force himself to eat something. But this year, again, I just went in for the spectacle of it. It is amazing how beautiful the things are, let alone how they taste. An enormous amount of work goes into the whole setup. I really appreciate what they accomplish.

Another night over and the saddest happiest day of all comes next; Castaway Cay. You love it because it IS truly paradise and you hate it because you know it will all soon be over. Unless you are on a back to back – Someday!

I know "EXACTLY" how you feel........:goodvibes :guilty:

Really enjoying your trip report - your enthusiasm and love for DCL comes across in every sentence! Looking forward to Castaway Cay - always bittersweet on that last day!

I was reading another trip report and saw how they were dreading finishing writing their trip report because ....then what????? It's really over then. And I realized that must be why my Castaway Cay Day is taking so long to finish. I don't want it to end! :sad1: But it is nearly finished on my home computer, I just have to resize the pics I want to add and then I should be able to post tonight. Then what? :confused3 Then I guess I will be concentrating on rebooking!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to read your CC report and see the pics Gayle and John!!! :thumbsup2

Your enjoyment of this trip is so clearly evident. You convey your thoughts & emotions beautifully. I'm definately feeling it. Keep it up, looking forward to more...

your report - thank you for taking the time. I also enjoy seeing the pictures......thank you again. Castaway Cay day is the most depressing day, isn't it?

What a beautiful Day! It was just gorgeous outside. They had been preparing us the day before that it might be a little cool and overcast, but it was all for naught! Only later in the afternoon did the weather start to turn a little.

DH had stayed up late on Thursday night to start the unpleasant job of packing. We don’t like it to interfere with ‘real’ time, so he has developed the habit over the years of doing this chore when he wouldn’t be doing anything else that it could interfere with. Nonetheless we were up early to get a good seat for breakfast at Topsiders to enjoy the view. It was spectacular as usual. What a way to start your day. The beautiful view of that gorgeous water and that pristine island, waiting just for us!
IMG_0268-1.jpg

We met up with DGM and DF and finished breakfast with them. DH and DD had the Jet Ski tour slated for 10:30 so we had to skedaddle off the ship. We wanted to try and get a picture with all of us, but that just didn’t happen. Then DS realized he had left his goggles, bought specifically for this day, on the ship.

So the four of us got a quick pic at the end of the ship and split up so DS and DW could go back and get the goggles. They then leisurely strolled toward the beaches, DW snapping pics along the way, (much to the annoyance of DS who was anxious to move along to the beach.) DS (newly minted teenager as he was) though in a hurry, then couldn’t decide what he wanted to do. Go to Groupers and play some games? Go out to the play area at the family beach? Eat? Walk? Get his hair braided? (Just kidding, but I was exasperated!) WHAT?? He just couldn’t decide. So DW suggested they sit on the beach while he pondered the whole thing. Well that was just the ticket. Lying in the sun! Mr. perpetual motion wanted to lie in the sun! We knew there was no turning back time now. He was a goner! Straight to teen land! DW was fine with the arrangement as she had brought a book to read. And after a nice relaxing hour, as luck would have, it just as DW was getting up to find some drinks; there were DH and DD back from the Jet Ski tour. Perfect timing! How we found each other was truly providence as we had not prearranged a thing! They said it was an amazing tour this year. That the guide really let them go full out on the jet skis and it was great. They were so far away they didn’t even know where they were when they stopped for the ecological talk! They really really enjoyed themselves.

IMG_0281-1.jpg

We continued in relaxing mode until it was time to meet DGM and DF for lunch at Cookies. When we got to the main area Tisa was there running a crab race! We had never seen one before this trip! Very entertaining. The funny thing to me was when I looked over the crowd’s shoulders I expected to see what I was used to – A Maryland blue crab – type crab. But this was a very Bahamian crab (a type of hermit crab as it turns out) and it was just cool to see something different. Your mind can really be limited by what you have grown up around and are used to. It’s great to get out into the world and see new stuff! Again, without any real plan we easily met up with DGM and DF for lunch. Everything was great! We never noticed before that the hamburgers were being grilled over a fire right there? How did we miss all this before? The ribs were yummy, and all the salads too. And the little banana breads were super delicious (and cute)! After we were quite stuffed, DH decided it was time to go back to the ship for him. DD and DS had Castaway Ray’s and the promise of a bike trip ahead of them. DD was determined to make the most of her time with her little bro and paid for these excursions herself! DF went to do some shopping and head back to the ship as well. In an unprecedented move, DW decided she was enjoying the island so much she would stay, voluntarily, out in the sun and sand for a while longer. She and DGM placed some chairs by the water at the end of the family beach, stuck their feet in and just relaxed and chatted. Again a luxury for them. It was just such a pleasant day, with a beautiful breeze; not too cool, just right. It was truly heavenly. They could have sat there all day drinking in the beauty of their surroundings.
IMG_0288-1.jpg

Finally we decided it was time to go and walked back to the tram (stopping for an ice cream cone along the way) and back to the ship. (Sand tip – baby powder will remove all or most of the sand from your feet so you can wear your footwear more comfortably after the beach. We always take a travel size to the beach with us. Save on lots of whining – mostly from DW!)

Back on board DH was already up at the adult pool and DW settled in on deck 4 to gaze at Castaway Cay (over a book top) for as long as possible while we waited for the kids to finish up their excursions. What a beautiful view! DD & DS arrived back full of stories of Castaway Ray’s. They had a great time learning about and feeding the Stingrays. They announced they were both going to become conservationists since they found out that those are the only people who stay on the island all year round. So THAT is the job for them! After the Stingray adventure they had gotten bikes and rode both the old trail and the new. DD had quite a workout between the jet skis and the bikes. She was a little sore as the evening wore on! It seemed like they had just a super time together. Just what she had hoped for.

90470004.jpg

Soon enough it was time to get ready for the last show. We made sure everything was packed except for sleepwear and the next day’s clothes before we went down for the show so we didn’t have any rushing around to do as far as packing was concerned.

The last show of the week completes the story of the little boy who wants to be captain who we met on the first night. Mimicking the feelings of most people on board he is depressed about leaving the ship behind. His family (and the cast and characters) are trying to cheer him up and help him take the ‘Magic’ with him. All it takes is Faith, Trust AND Pixie Dust! In between the storyline we saw the cabaret acts one last time. Jeff Civilico was so funny I thought DGM was going to split a seam she was laughing so hard. He encouraged people to take pictures so we took the hint and grabbed some (blurry) shots. He was just terrific.
IMG_0297.jpg

IMG_0300.jpg

Of course they play the Remember the Magic song to slides of the week and make us all cry. It’s a wonder the rebooking desk isn’t backed up a mile after that show! We all left happy but yet sad. Knowing what a great week we had truly had, but having to say goodbye.

Between the show and dinner we went and picked up our little Valentine gifts we had brought for everyone, and took Oana’s up to Palo. We spent a few minutes there talking and then headed to dinner.

Dinner was the ‘Til We Meet again menu. We weren’t disappointed on this last night. Everything was delicious and it’s always fun when they bring out the flaming baked Alaska. We had brought out the little gift bags and gave them to the servers with their tips. (Unfortunately we had brought some gourmet chocolate and found out Sammy didn’t like chocolate! So I had done some quick switches and hoped he would like what I had come up with. He was just touched we had done anything at all. They were all so sweet!

Between Dinner and dessert DH ran to the stateroom to just put the luggage outside the door and got back in time for the Till we meet again show in the Atrium. DH likes the intimate setting and the ability to compliment the actors for their hard work over the week. It’s great for the kids as they also get some up close time with characters that aren’t necessarily part of the ordinary rotation that they see. Again they make everyone cry as they sing the Mickey Mouse Club Goodbye Song and shoot one last round of confetti on everyone (shiny Mickey Heads this time!) What a bittersweet night. You really feel like this is the best place on earth you could possibly be. How can we even think of leaving? One of our favorite memories is once saying to John C. “Oh well, now we have to go back to the real world.” To which he replied, “Isn’t this the real world?” Explains why a lot of the crew are such long-timers!

IMG_0316.jpg

Next we were off to Pub Night in Diversions. It lifts us up out of our ‘now we have to leave’ funk and has us laughing uproariously to end the night. If you’ve never been, you should try it at least once. We never miss it now that we’ve discovered it. The cruise staff starts with a good old fashioned pub sing-along. They teach us songs and pit the ladies against the men in some funny rounds and action songs. Next they perform a skit entitled “If I Were Not Upon the Sea” which can not be described, only experienced. We just think it is hilarious. We ended with a couple dances in Rocking Bar D (with the cruise staff joining in still in their outrageous costumes. Watching Ballerina Trevor dance around was particularly entertaining!). Very reluctantly we headed to bed; ready to start all over again if we only could!

Wrap up and incidentals:

All in all it was one of the most perfect, glitch free, trips from beginning to end. It serves to renew and energize us rather than give us the feeling we need a vacation from our vacation! Each person had their own special things they loved on their own, and we had a great time together. DS really enjoyed some of the organized activities they had for his age group, mysteries and scavenger hunts, dodge ball and basketball tournaments, and just hanging out. We went to a birthday party at a new arcade the other night and they had a NASCAR game. He said it reminded him of the ship, and that that made him very happy! Having our new traveling companions was so great. What a fun fun blessing! Ready to go with them again anytime! And it was such a nice time to spend with our now adult daughter. Her first cruise was in 2000 when she was 12 – the age DS is now! Where else can you find a vacation that translates from 12 years old through to 21 without ever a bump? It still amazes us how perfect it has been for our family.

We also want to say how beautiful the ship looked to us. From the first approach to every detail inside, we still think she is the beauty of the seas. We have always found the ship to been in excellent condition and we’ve sailed a couple of times with the same period elapsing since dry dock. However, this time we think she looked especially terrific. They always replace the carpeting during dry dock, but this time the carpet looked more vibrant that before. Much of it is the same pattern, but we think the colors were far more vivid and there were some areas with new patterns altogether.

The most notable changes since this last dry dock were the flat screen TVs in the staterooms, which we found to be great! Awesome picture; and we liked the range of movement and just generally thought they were cool. The safes have been changed as well. They now use a programmable key pad rather than a key to the world card. This is a great improvement and made it possible for any of us to open the safe at any time. The adult pool area looks fantastic, the new hot tubs are great, the water falls coming out of them are very nice and the new teak loungers, which are padded during the day, are very comfy. Over all the area has a slightly more sophisticated luxurious feel.

And as always there were workers in yellow jump suits doing work all over the ship at all times; Refinishing railings, power washing the hull, painting, patching and just keeping her looking great. We are definitely proud that we are returning to the Magic after excursions. We were really amazed at the poor condition, at least aesthetically, some of the other ships we saw were in. Another Disney difference!

Thanks for taking the trip with us. We can’t wait to go again!
