Cruise Meet Threads - Still Active?

My last cruise the meet thread was pretty hopping at this point prior to the cruise. This one is pretty dead. There were a lot of joiners in the beginning, but after some post removals everybody seems to have gone. Are other threads as active as they used to be, or is it a dying thing now?

It's much less active. Fewer "old hands" who've done them. But, some are fairly active. Others haven't taken off since the "no other social websites" enactment. It's more like it was when it first started - smaller groups.

Also, IrishCowboy, the person who has been setting up the links to the meet threads (for those threads that have been attempted), hasn't been doing so since mid-September. Don't know if he's quit doing it, or has other things going on right now.

Many people have moved on to other pastures when it comes to cruise groups.

Some cruise meet threads are quite active, others not so much. I guess it just depends on the people on that particular cruise and their preference for social media sites.

" Here" there pretty dead. Elsewhere still active. The main forum here is also way down on activity.

Yes, that is the sad side effect.

What's happened is people do meet up, they do find each other, but then stay there and do not come back to the main forum. Overnight the main forum could be two/ three pages of threads to catch up on, often it's half a page now.

Our last cruise had a very active group. Organized meet and greets (both before and on the ship), weekly trivia contests with door magnets as prizes leading up to the cruise, three different mixology classes set up, cabin crawl, not to mention at least 11 FE groups of about 10 people in each (some people were in two or more groups). Infant the group was so big that ego’s got in the way and part of the group split off to form another very active group (we were members of both groups, like a lot of people on the fringe were) However none of this was organized on this website, try looking on other social media websites to see what is out there.

If that was during the initial implementation of the "no other social media directs may be place on DISboards" (this past March) that's probably what it was. The purging of those posts that directed (or had links) to other social media sites caused a lot of people to gather up their toys and leave.

Well instead of letting them coexist together and still have healthy threads, social media was cut out and I think a lot of us predicted that would be the end of active meet threads instead of driving more traffic to the meet threads. It's too bad there wasn't room for everybody.

Very sad. I don't do social media but always liked getting to know my fellow cruisers on the DISboards. Unfortunately my next cruise has a dead meet. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 2016 Member Cruise out of NYC. I'm soooooo excited to have been able to book at 9am today. Already checked for a Meet but 9/28 not listed yet. Sigh.

Pretty sure they were doing it for your internet safety. Instead of info being sent by PM, or email addresses being shared amongst the group, people were blasting their info on social media, those running the groups were sometimes TAs who then spammed those people or used the info somehow, etc. Since Disboard has an active life on social media, they aren't against it.

Disagree. Not for anyone's Internet safety, in fact " other places " are far safer, anyone can read anything here and you do not even need to log in. This was about " advertising " clicks, trying to stop people moving elsewhere by blocking it, and it totally backfired , as when people go, they do not come back. In small groups on other social media, you get to know very quickly if someone is not telling the truth, or a TA. Here , there are some, who do not tell the truth, and hide behind moderation.

My cruise meet thread is very inactive compared to past cruises. I thought it was because it is only a 5 day cruise. But apparently everyone is on FB, so for the first time ever we aren't doing FEs on this cruise because I don't have a FB account (nor do I want one -- if I could find an emoticon of someone sticking their finger down their throat and gagging I would put it here as that is how I feel about FB!)

I just think it's funny that you can't post facebook links on disboards, but they give you the option to log into your disboards account with your facebook account and have facebook "likes" and "recommend" embedded on the forums.
