I see lots of people mentioning a 3-day or 4-day cruise when posting here on the DIS. Perhaps I'm being a bit picky here, but these are really 3-night (or 4-night) cruises. The way I see it, a 3-night cruise really only gives you 2 or 2.5 days on a cruise.

Right. It's the old advertising gimmick to make you feel like you are getting more (7 nights, 6 days for example).

Actually, I have been looking at NCL lately for a solo cruise since I like the look of the solo studios. They actually us the term 4 day for a 4 night cruise. It took me a bit to adjust when I was looking at their site.

I think they do 3 day because you do get on the boat mid day and still have several hours your first day then 2 whole days. When I think of a night stay count like a hotel I imagine the fact you can't even get in usually until 4pm. If I start my vacation when they first let us board and check in at the earliest PAT then it is a long full day. That's just me personally.

Would you like us to change how we refer to our cruises?

You really do get services for almost 4 days on a 4-night cruise. If you board as soon as possible, you'll get on the cruise just before lunch. You are asked to debark just after breakfast. So you get 12 full meals, and miss out on 3 hours or so of a full 4 days, or even less if you push things to the extreme and get on the earliest possible and get off the latest possible times.

I've seen plenty of advertisements for things like a "5-day" land vacation that only included 4 nights, and would probably be more like 3.5 days of actual food and fun for most people, given travel time and realistic check-in/check-out times. Cruise advertising seems relatively accurate by comparison.

I also refer to cruises by the number of nights. However, a 3-night cruise is actually 4 days. You board the ship on day 1 and disembark 3 nights later - on day 4. The first and last days aren't full 24-hour days, but they are parts of a day.

Agreed, 3 night is pretty much 4 days. A 3 night cruise leaving December 5th will return on December 8th. (5th, 6th ,7th, 8th) while you don't get a full day when you disembark you still get another meal and will be on the ship for a good part of the morning as well.
