I have a 4 night cruise on the Disney Magic booked for August and then to AKL and the theme parks for 5 nights. I hurt myself at work and surgery for my back is a possibility in January. It looks like it could be like a 6 month recovery. I'm nervous if this happens to go right into all the walking at the theme parks. Should I ditch the theme parks and 4 night magic cruise and do a 7 night treasure instead? I just can't cancel the trip. I have to do something lol. Anyone have any opinions on back surgery, Disney magic, Disney treasure or anything to suggest involving this situation ? Thank you all

What kind of surgery? I had a laminectomy with fusion on L4 & L5 and it didn't take 6 months for recovery. You could always rent an ECV from an outside vendor for the Resort and parks, the bus drivers are all very accommodating.

Depends on what kind of surgery. I went to WDW 8 weeks after a laminectomy and discectomy. Walking is good for recovery. I didn't go on any jerky rides until 6 months post op but there were still many rides I could do. I don't do roller coasters other than BTMRR anyway so I didn't really miss much.

I don't have any opinion on back surgery. However, I find cruises to be more flexible in a 'choose your own adventure' type of way. You can go and have a very active cruise, do lots of activities, excursions, spend time in ports, etc., or you can just go and have a super relaxing vacation (lots of down time, sitting on decks reading, etc.). In the theme parks, you have less of that flexibility as it's very go go go. So, doing just a cruise may give you more flexibility to do what you're comfortable with at that point in your recovery. Plus, doing just a cruise takes out the extra logistics of getting off the ship, getting to WDW, etc. That's not terrible to deal with, but it is extra logistics and could also be a bit 'taxing' depending on how you're feeling.

I don't have any specific knowledge about back surgery, but it's not so much the walking that could be an issue, it is all of the standing on hard surfaces that could be an issue if you are in the parks (in line, waiting for transportation, etc.). If you are supposed to walk after this surgery, you might find it easier to do that on board a ship where you only have a short distance to find somewhere to sit down for a while or to go back to your stateroom if it becomes too much for you. You can walk around all of the decks inside on carpeting and outside on the (partial) promenade. Go back inside, up the elevator, walk the deck, repeat.

No clue about the back surgery but I would advise speaking with your surgeon and getting advice from a medical standpoint. If it was me and the kids were cool with it, I would do the 7-day cruise. If the kids have their hearts set on WDW then I would rent a scooter and minimize the amount of time I am standing and walking to prevent a release in my recovery. Whatever you do it will be fun and magical

I got an epidural and it was a serious procedure but worth it. Maybe you can too. Check with your doctor.
DCL is the only line we'll cruise on.
