I have a cruise which contains Canadian and US ports. Canadian stops first then 2 in the US. If I make a purchase in a Canadian Port (not duty free) do I have to declare this purchase to CBSA when I return to Canada at the end of the cruise. It's a Canadian purchase while I (a Canadian) am still in my native land. I can't seem to find a straightforward answer to this. I know all duty free purchases must be declared and all purchases in US ports.

I am no customs officer.

I cannot imagine why you would declare Canadian purchased goods. Eliminate the fact that you are on a cruise in your analysis. The mode of transportation is immaterial. It could be a car, a boat or a flying monkey. It doesn’t matter. You are in Canada, bought material goods in Canada and then went to the US.

Enjoy your trip!

That's what I hoped but when I put the question out there on google the A! generated answer came back with all goods on a cruise have to be declared. Seems silly to me also. I was planning on keeping all purchases in separate little envelopes (based on where purchased, Canada, US, ship) for when I returned.

I'll call CBSA if no one knows for sure.

Honestly, don't worry about anything you buy in Canada. How could the CBSA tax or apply duty to goods you had legally purchased in Canada before you entered the U.S. ? It would be like taxing a shirt I bought in Canada a year ago on my return from a day trip to the U.S.

We’ve been on over 10 cruises and I’ve never kept track of purchases that organized. As long as you are under your exemption amount for the time you are away, they really don’t care.

I think if you keep your receipt of purchase and it clearly states Canada you shouldn't have any issues?
