Here's a story for you...
On Tuesday, August 29th, we started our day at the Magic Kingdom with breakfast at the Crystal Palace at 8:05am. Wonderful breakfast with fantastic service!
We exited the restaurant shortly before 9am and my husband decided he was going to ride Haunted Mansion. While he was gone, I took the kids on Winnie the Pooh (walked right on) and the Tea Cups (again, walked right on...twice in a row). As we were leaving and heading for the Motor Cars (yup, walked on), my husband caught up with us and relayed this experience:
He walked into the Haunted Mansion and was greeted with, "Not only are you the first person this morning, you are the ONLY person this morning." He responded with, "I guess we'll all know who the 1000th ghost will be", which actually made the cast member crack a smile. He rode the entire ride ALL BY HIMSELF with no one else riding the attraction. When he exited, there still was no one in line waiting! Personally, I would have been a little freaked out. For him, it was one of the highlights of his trip!
Overall, we really had no issue with the crowds (or buses) ever. We sometimes did the EMH, but used the Touring Plan guide as to which parks to avoid and also went to whatever park had the EMH the morning/night before. It worked like a charm and the longest wait we had for any ride was about 10 minutes for Dumbo. We walked right onto Soarin' and that was at 10am in the morning.
