Crowds on mlk day

For those that have been on MLK day in years past, I know it’s busier since it’s a holiday, but how bad are we talking? According to past touring plan crowds it hasn’t been too bad, but everyone on forums say to avoid it? So I’m just trying to gauge how bad is it haha. Is it Like cannot move or just be smart with fastpasses and a plan and you should be ok. I’m debating changing the dates of our trip to that week but we’d have to have one park day be mlk day which I’m a bit unsure about. We’d save quite a bit with our hotel. But rotr will have just opened plus the holiday I don’t know if I am setting us up for a really busy week. We are booked for the week before right now but namm is that week and hotels are super booked out which is making me a tad nervous the crowds may be bad even though I think most are just there for the convention hopefully 😬 Thanks in advance for any insight :)

We will be there that week too. When I booked the hotel, I completely forgot about the mlk holiday. It was just the last week my son has off in college before going back, so I thought it would be less crowded. When I realized my mistake, 5 months had already passed since I booked, and the rates blew up. Hoping for the best....

Are you going the week before or after the holiday!? It’s the best time for us to go too but I just am having the toughest time deciding which week! And I need to cancel one if the hotels haha.

We'll be in the parks T-Th, 21-23. I was planning on being there Su and Mo as well, but with the holiday, I'm just cutting it down to 3 days. I'll do MP and no PH. T: DCA, W: DL, and Th: DL with MM and Star Wars for first time (hope to get on both rides in there). I'm wondering if we should try W for SW in case it's harder to get in.
Are you guys doing the week before or after?

I’m not positive yet. I’m leaning towards the week before, the last three times we’ve gone ive missed splash mountain. So I’m hoping to make it before it’s possible refurb. But the hotels are such a better deal the week after and everything is so booked hotel wise the week we are going its making me nervous, so I just don’t know which to do!

I went on MLK this year, 2019, and it was not crowded at all for a holiday Monday. Most rides had under a 45 min wait with really good fp availability. The park closed at 9pm this past year and I was surprised by that when I first saw the calendar but after being there that day it made sense crowd wise. Fireworks were suppose to happen that day but it was extremely windy by the end of the day so they played mmm without the fireworks.

Oh that’s not too bad!! I wonder what the schedule will be like I’m guessing similar to last year.

I can't believe I did this, but somehow I thought my son doesn't start the spring semester until Jan 27th when it's actually the 21st, day after MLK. So I went on to look for a room for the prior week. Yikes! You weren't kidding. 60K points/night to stay at Homewood! So I booked the Embassy south a few miles down Harbor for Jan 6-9 and will still plan to do parks 7th to 9th, Tu to Th. OP, did you make your final decision?

Oh no! Yes that week was nuts for the hotels, I was trying to snag something on points too and I think we are going to go the week of MLK day and just hope for the best. I was able to get a really good rate with homewood suites and use some of my points. We've never stayed there so hopefully its a good one.

I also went on MLK day this year. Park hours were 9am-9pm which shocked me for a holiday. It was a little crazy getting in, but once everyone dispersed, it really wasn't crowded at all. My friends and I figured it wasn't crowded because it's only a few weeks after Christmas and everyone is still recovering from spending money lol. I feel like President's day weekend was more crowded.

The Homewood is our absolute favorite. We love the design of the rooms and breakfast. We also like to be able to walk over to the toy story lot and grab the shuttle to the parks early. You will have a great time.

I've gone on the day a couple times and it wasn't bad. I think the combination of it being the travel day (meaning people will be heading home to go back to work/school next day) and it being in the middle of winter without any special themeing keeps it not too busy. It can be very cold as soon as the sun goes down.

I typically head down for a birthday celebration during this period, and in the past the crowds have been completely reasonable. With ROTR premiering on the 17th that could change this year, but crowds have been unpredictable.

I will say that the on-site hotel rates don't indicate a massive influx of people yet. Compared to this month, rates for the MLK weekend are pretty reasonable.

I’m going to guess not. Rise of the resistance opens on Friday of MLK weekend.

That might be great for crowds. Especially if Disney blocks all of the lower passes like they did for Smugglers Run. The place will be dead again.

These are the blockout calendars for January. I’m planning for that weekend being nuts with the ride opening.

We went on MLK this year just DH and I. We got there Sat am and left Monday PM. I thought it was pretty manageable. We are probably going again this coming year. We got on all rides we wanted and took it very relaxed. I am used to the Christmas season and crowds never scare or push me away so not sure if my perspective of manageable is the same as others.

We'll be there MLK weekend! It's the only weekend we can go while we're in CA. We're staying at the GC so hopefully we can take breaks as needed. Really hoping they have fireworks and minimal refurbishments since ROTR will be open.
