Crowds for 4th of July? When to visit?

We've never been to Disneyland, and starting to think about visiting next year. Is the week of the 4th of July too crowded? Our options would be:
1. Mid June
2. Week before the 4th (would go to a beach for the actual 4th)
3. Mid July

Which do you think would be best to visit? Thanks!

Traditionally the July 4th weekend is the 2nd busiest time of the year after the Christmas/New Years holidays. However, we just came back from visiting over July 4th weekend and the parks were very light crowds. Disneyland was only crowded a bit at night on July 4th. California Adventure was empty all weekend and Disneyland was light crowds as well. I've been told not to expect that every year.

We've also been to Disneyland over New Years Eve years ago and it was the lightest crowds I had ever seen.

Just seems almost impossible to predict when crowds will show up.

I was in DL on the 4th & DCA on the 5th and I was suprised that the parks were not super crowded. It felt like a typical weekend with some crowds. The longest wait times for lines was 60 min @ Indy & Roger Rabbit.
