Crowd Outlook

The point i was attempting to make is that they do not have to fill those rooms, but if the demand all of a sudden comes back they are taking money out of their own pocket.

Most rooms in Disney are set to run back when motion isn't detected for an extended period of time, you can't simply turn off the AC, things break when it gets too hot. Typically you run AC on a setback to conserve energy.

Again in terms of housekeeping, they simply do not have to put guests in that section of hotel, and poof that problem is solved. It's like not putting people in a certain area of a restaurant.

I'm not saying they haven't done it, i suppose it is possible. I am saying i don't agree with the reasons laid out
they'll simply just reopen them, they arent going to turn people away. they'll have advanced notice to get the open.

Why would you not offer them online then? I'm sorry if this is circular thinking but it doesn't make much sense to me. Disney is taking hotel room availability off the website, but are willing to book the rooms if there is enough demand? that just doesn't add up.

i mean they probably wont open them up for a handful of guests, but if there is enough demand they would.

it wouldnt surprise me if they were doing this, lots of resorts do it.

They are taking them offline cause there isn't enough demand. At this point they have a pretty good idea how many rooms are going to be filled. Remember most people book their Disney vacations months in advance. Also by taking rooms offline it pushes people to other resorts possibly more expensive ones.

I know this doesn’t break down Disney World vs Disneyland but this is for April 2-July 1

Disney Company 10-Q

Domestic Hotel Occupancy 84% Q3 FY23 vs 90% Q3 FY22 (2.122M occupied nights vs 2.250M occupied nights)

Domestic Parks attendance up 1% overall Q3 23 v Q3 22

Most operators would kill for this. For Disney, it's well below expectations. (And you can assume it's mostly WDW because that's where the lion's share of the rooms are.)
Went backed and checked it from what I could find. Same quarter pre-Covid 2018 and 2019.

2018: 86% occupancy at domestic resorts, 2.164M occupied vs 2.517M available nights

2019: 88% occupancy, 2.202M occupied vs 2.503M available nights

2022: 90%, 2.250M occupied bs 2.507M available nights

2023: 84%, 2.122M occupied vs 2.527M available nights

Some interesting tidbits from the earnings call:

Domestic parks attendance grew slightly year over year, reflecting comparisons against last year's strong trends coming out of the 50th anniversary at Walt Disney World. Per cap spending was comparable to the prior year with contributions from pricing, Genie+, and higher food and beverage spend offset by attendance composition changes and lower merchandise spend.
I'm surprised that attendance is up, but in light of the later comments it makes sense. "...offset by attendance composition changes" means "a higher fraction of passholders/keyholders," who contribute less per-visit to admission revenue.

We continue to expect some moderation in demand at our domestic parks as we compare against our highly successful 50th anniversary celebration at Walt Disney World and the burn-off of pent-up demand persists, while elevated travel costs are impacting international visitation.
"Expect some continued softening in attendance and/or reductions in per-capita spending."

Looking to Disney entertainment studios. We're focused on improving the quality of our films and on better economics, not just reducing the number of titles we release but also the cost per title. [...] we're very focused on improving the quality and the performance of the films that we've got coming up. It's something that I'm working closely with the studio on. I'm personally committed to spending more time and attention on that as well.
"Those b*st*rds should know I'm looking over their shoulders. The blank check days are over, and I Have Notes."

Interestingly, there were no questions about the Parks and Experiences segment. Or, if there were any, they were so uninteresting that I don't remember them.

Disney Investor Relations should have the transcript up shortly, but you can read it here:

The major shareholders who move the needle on the stock will only ask on the Parks and Experiences segment when they have concerns on it.

Right now the media segment and streaming rule the day.

That's exactly my point, but stated much better.

There is all kinds of hand-wringing here about the Parks dying. The people with money on the line are not worried about that. At all.

Maybe it's because they keep making money hand over fist haha. IMO the stock price has all to do with DInsey+ and the streaming bubble bursting. Companies and investors are still trying to figure out what streaming is going to look like down the road, and it is dragging down the market.

Our family actively supported Disney through Park visits, cruises, the old DisneyStore. We stopped supporting anything Disney after our daughter completed the Disney college program. Her experiences and an obvious shift in cast member experiences- our animator friends who worked with Disney expressed the same change in their departments- this was 2018. Those shifts are playing out with horrific programming decisions- a cartoon that centers around a spawn of Satan? Just today, a partnership with a transgender to promote dresses for girls? The discussions on drops in attendance should look at the drops of Disboard memberships. When I was active here for 15 years- I knew many fellow Dis-ER’s, cruised with them- travelled with them- they are no longer here- sold their DVC investments, not just a few- many-many. I only popped in today to see if those left are influenced at all by the sickening trends Disney is pushing. Doesn’t seem so. Our family will never support Disney again- it’s too far gone- I used to know 20-30 families planning something to Disney each year- The past five years, that number has dropped to 1- and they say they won’t go back unless it changes back to family friendly- not agenda driven. So, 100+ visits in five years to one. Many of you don’t see that trend because you aren’t in the group offended by Disney politics. Just know you’re not likely to hear this perspective- because these dollars have fled these sites. I doubt Disney will grow shunning this chunk of its fan base. You’ll find us at the National Parks and abroad. Never Disney.

Yeah any of the Media companies that have their hands in the pot of both Linear and Streaming Wall Street hasn’t seemed to figure out what they’re looking for out of it and are just playing the float along game until the picture is actually clear.

Similarly, none of the major Tech companies with capital to spare will want to touch anything of those Media Companies for the same reason.

Very well said. And you are right those people aren't around anymore in these groups. My family is somewhere in the middle, not ready to drop it but also not happy with the way things have gone but have chosen to not see many recent movies/shows. I hear it around me all the time that Disney isn't the same, some have stopped it all some are like us and not sure where to go, but many of them use to go alot (we live 2.5 hours away) to now just going a couple days a year at most. It is a much larger crowd then some want to believe.

based on the numbers being reported, if people are jumping off, others are jumping on. The demand of annual passes illuminates that IMO.
