Crowd levels right now?

Mousefan mom, that stinks! I'm so sorry you had such a lousy experience. We were there over July 4 last year and it was great - maybe it was just that particular time, but I would recommend considering that time period for next year. Our favorite time to go is during our March school break but it didn't work for us this year, hence going now.
We love to go in March too--but we have 2 different spring breaks to work around, they haven't been jiving the past couple of years, lol. You know the funny is, we've never tried Universal because I always complained about all the little up charges there (parking, fast pass experiences, etc.) and their limited park hours...but sadly, now that Disney seems to be going that route, we may try Universal for the first time next year. I'm thinking the express pass sounds heavenly after spending so much time this year waiting to get transported to a park, into a park, on a ride (even the FP lines were long--I swear!).

Not sure about now, but it was really slow the past few weeks. I kept seeing photos of fb of nearly empty parks. I couldn't believe it. One was Epcot in the afternoon and nobody was there. I think it has been picking up slowly though.

Looking at the app this week the crowds look brutal. Apparently people aren’t waiting for SWGE to open. It makes no sense to me why they don’t keep the parks open later on high crowd days. I can remember being in MK easily until midnight sometimes 2am on high crowd days in the past. I wonder why WDW is so adamant about the 10:00 or even 9:00 closing this year?

later opening times too--I can remember just a year or 2 ago 7 AM opening times, certainly 8am. AK had later hours the summer after Pandora, and Hollywood had later hours last summer after TSL. This summer there was just nothing to disburse the crowds.

We speculated about this too--because now they have the up charge events before park opening and after park close--but in our experience even the after hours event was terribly packed this year compared to last year. No way would I recommend anyone paying $100 plus for it any longer--and last year it was the highlight of our trip.

I went earlier this month and had gone mid-July last year -- I thought there was a marked difference in the crowds this year and found it to be much busier. We got up every day for rope drop. Last summer, we could easily ride several big-ticket rides with no line in the first couple of hours of park open, even in MK on a Saturday. This year, it wasn't like that at all. It was crowded at rope drop and just got more crowded during the day. Even had trouble finding spots to sit and eat at QS restaurants, which definitely wasn't the case last summer at all. I was a bit disappointed but it always serves as a nice reminder that crowd calendars are a bunch of BS and I shouldn't allow them to get my hopes up.

My husband and I are coming for a long weekend this weekend and I'm hoping crowds will be a little more manageable this visit. I guess Disney hope springs eternal!

We were just there from 7/20-7/21. I'm almost afraid to tell you because I don't want to spoil your trip--but this is the honest truth. We stayed at the Poly, booked all reservations well in advance, and did FP at 7AM at the 60 day window. We have gone this time of the year (give or take a week) the past 6 years consecutively. Huge Disney fans, love, love, love....best Disney vacation ever just last summer. Having said that, we had absolutely planned to go again next summer (already working with travel agent to book 2020) until we went this summer.

The crowds (which we anticipated would be lower due to SWGE opening later and it has been the past couple of July's) were insanely crowded and there was just no escape from them this year. We even booked a Disney after hours (Villain), which we had did last summer...except this summer they let so many more people into them that what was a peaceful non-crowded MK last year with walk on rides....were now 20 minute average wait times to ride this year (not okay during an after hours--and we didn't get to ride a lot of things we had wanted). It felt more like EMH'ers versus the after hours party we paid $130 per person to attend.

The Disney transportation seemed to take so much longer this year (on average over an hour to get from resort to park). I am blaming this also on just more people/higher crowds--and they fact the parks have such limited hours (I still remember when MK was kept open until midnight, the past 2 summers Hollywood and AK had later hours, etc.). We attempted to park hop from Hollywood to a dining reservation in Epcot one day, they shut down the water boats, told us it would "quicker" to take a bus--we waited over 45 minutes to get a bus out of Hollywood--had it not been pouring we would have walked. Monorails were often very hot, and almost always standing room only packed. Getting out of the MK after the Villain after hours was stressful and packed--like at park closing. It truly felt like park closing because there were SO many people there. We were also planning to do the Hollywood after hours party, and ended up not doing it because the MK one was so disappointing. I am not sure if it was the free dining, just more AP this year due to all the new stuff opening--but the crowds were intense. Normally we do our 3 fast passes, and then immediately book others--this year there was nothing left that you would even need a FP for. Lines were long for all rides. Epcot had slightly less wait times, but when it rains they close test track and then that swamps the other lines. We had a FP to test track and it was down due to wetness, and they would not allow us to use it for FEE (which I felt we should have since both are tier 1).

We think Disney could have done a better job at extending park hours to disburse the crowds, and we are also blaming the new FP systems (people were talking about being able to buy 6 of them now if you stay club level, and I believe good neighbor hotels also get to book them early now)...but even at our 60 day mark, we were unable to get SDD until the last day in our trip, etc. Sorry--I know I sound so negative. We still love Disney--but we plan to take a break this year and hope to find our magic by 2021...

We went 07/08-07/15 and our experience mirrored yours almost to the T. It was the worst Disney trip we've had since we started coming in 2011. It just seemed like Disney was surprised by the crowds or something but we encountered a lot of obstacles we don't normally encounter -- even when we've been at holidays where the parks are legit packed. Buses took forever to come to pick you up, lines for everything were very long, the After Hours even was packed and not worth the money. Pretty disappointing all around, especially when you've got big sites like Touring Plans saying this is going to be the "slowest summer we've seen in year." That it was not.

Wow! We were at MK July 5...we went in expecting the worst due to July 4 and were pleasantly surprised by the crowds and ability to get additional FP. We are going Aug 28-Sept 2 as a last minute trip since family will be there....I’m sure it will be bananas. Not ,even going to set foot in HS though

I had been looking at wait times 4th of July week since it was the week before we went. MK wait times were better 4th of July week than they were the week after that -- when free dining started.

I went over the 4th and I didn't think the crowds were too bad. I was glad to have gotten in before free dining started. That said, it seems like people were finding good/cheap priceline express deals for late July and August indicating Disney had significant room inventory to sell.

Ah yes, I forgot about free dining

They looked awesome. I wished that I was there! LOL

I am in the camp that open park hours, early openings, and late nights, are truly needed to spread people around. I am 'really' hoping come SWGE-time we get back to a period of some 'better' park hours at at least 1-2 parks during the summer months.

We were there last week and I was surprised by the crowds too. This was our 3rd time going in the summer, 2nd year in a row going during that time of July and this was much worse than what we’ve experienced in the past. It even seemed more crowded than the trip we took over spring break. As others have said, Epcot was fine, but everywhere else was a mess, particularly MK. My entire family declared MK their least favorite park by the end of this trip and I’m pretty sure it was just because of the crowds. We still had an amazing trip and are planning another July visit next year, but I’m hoping we won’t have a repeat of what we experienced this year.

We are here now. MK is crazy busy and the evening storms are making things worse. Last night at about 730pm, it took almost 1 hour to ride SM with a FP (took close to 30 minutes just to get inside the ride). We entered the FP line near the end of our window so we missed our next FP at BTMR. For the past two nights, the storms have caused closures of all outside rides for a few hours. This, together with the early closing time for MK, is creating crowds like we have never seen. Luckily, we are staying CL at AKL so we are spending most of our time at the resort. HS has also been hectic - 2 to 3 hour waits for the headliners. Took us 45 minutes to ride RRC with a FP this past Saturday. We go multiple times each summer and I have never seen such crowds. We wait until the evening to enter the parks (to avoid the heat) and I am really disappointed by the limited evening hours.

It’s a shame how they are closing MK so early in the summer now. Actually all parks. We were at HS Saturday night and closing at 9 just seems ridiculous. 10 pm for MK?! If they kept it open leaving at close wouldn’t be such a cluster. That’s my least favorite “experience” of all.

Several of the crowd websites (Kenny The Pirate) still indicate that by the middle of August, crowds will be moderate to low. I've seen no indication at least as yet that that will be proven accurate.

I agree with this now that I experienced rain closing everything down for hours while we were there. We bailed one day and just went back to the resort. If the park was open late we could have gone back.

So, we will be at MK this Sunday and have a PPO BOG breakfast at 8am. Hoping that's the edge we need to bypass some crowds. I looked at waits last sunday AM around 9amand they were very low around Frontierland and Adventure Land (we have a FP+ for 7DMT) so we will not be with the pack at RD. Part of me hopes there's a drop off in crowds on Aug 1 as kids go back to school and the other part of me is like, BRACE YOURSELF!

We are conditioned to always expect crowds but I feel like when we go to WDW in the summer, we should at least get lower crowd levels to compensate with the heat and rain :laughing:
