Crock Pot or (slow cooker)

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in this but we spend 4 to 5 weeks a year at OKW and we eat in 90% of the time. This time when we get our groceries at WalMart, we are going to buy a crock pot. They don't have them in the rooms and they are not available from housekeeping, I'm told.
When we leave I hate to throw it out and I thought maybe we could "pass it along" like the stoller someone has.
We are there from 5/14 to 5/31. We'll be at Port Orleans Riverside the last weekend. If anyone would like to take the crock pot let me know.

I'd be willing to pass it along if no one wants it until June 2nd. Perhaps we'd even make use of it, though we'll be in a studio we will probably be doing a lot of sandwiches, etc....if I bring some browned ground beef I could make chili.

Good idea. I often thought of bringing the crockpot or buying one and leaving it behind.

Anyone else?

I'll be in for Dec. 12-17th too if it can last that long (and you don't need it then....)

We are sending my daughter's middle school band director to WDW from May 30-June 4th as an end-of-the-year gift. We have a studio reserved for him, his wife, and 2 kids at OKW. I am sure his wife would appreciate having a crock-pot for the room, and we could surprise them with a few items to put in it! They have had a few recent financial set-backs, and my goal is to make sure they have a good time without spending more than the cost of groceries for a week at home. I donated the points, we collected money for the 4-day hoppers(I have collected $500 of the $700 needed), and my daughter used her own money to purchase Disney Dollars for the kids. I also purchased 4 breakfast vouchers to use at Chef Mickey's, and 6 Q&C vouchers, and I plan to leave a little gift box with autograph books and fat pens at the front desk for them. I wish I could do more...he's a very good teacher...but I would have to cancel my family's trip if I did! I could make sure the crock pot was left at the front desk or with someone else. Please let me know! This is a very nice thing...a crock-pot swap! Maybe we could pass along a few recipes as well....

It makes sense. You can put the stuff in in the morning before leaving for the parks, and your dinner will be ready at night when you get back! Perfect!

I think we should suggest that DVC supply villas with these!!

I doubt you will ever see DVC supply crock pots, the fire problem would be the reason. Leaving things cooking while at the parks is something DVC or WDW for that matter would want to promote. Cooking in the one and two bedrooms is one thing but in the studios or a normal WDW room is something else, crock pots are another story entirely, unattended cooking is not something I would be interested in hearing too much about as a member. A number of years ago at the non-DVC rooms they took out the coffee makers because guests were using them to cook with, all they need is someone using crock pots, which would be far worse, then just straight cooking in the rooms. Regular hotel rooms are not places to cook, micro is one thing, cooking is another.

I don't know how or if this can work, but we are going to be at OKW and VB from the May8-May15. We leave on the 15 going to the Orlando Airport from VB. I am planning on buying a crock pot while there but I am taking it to VB with me. I was planning on leaving it there but maybe I can bring it back. I don't know if I will have time to take it all the way to WDW though. If someone wants to figure a way to get it I will be glad to give it to anyone who can use it. Mildor, please email me if we can work something out. I just read the previous post and I am now not so sure about the crockpot meal. I leave them on at home and have never considered it to be unsafe. We are staying in a GV and just wanted to quick meal after a long day out. Plus, it gets to be very expensive eating most meals out.

I can see your point with regular hotel rooms....but DVC studios are designed for limited cooking. They do, after all, have microwave ovens and toasters.

DVC will never supply a crock pot for the reasons mentioned....even in the larger villas. But I think the possibility of someone burning down DVC with a crockpot is slim. Personally I wouldn't use one on a day we'd be out the whole time....but on a day we're popping in and out of the room...I'd feel fine with it.

I don't need the crockpot (we just returned from our Spring Break Trip), but I wanted to tell Mic what a wonderful thing he is doing for their DD's Band Director. Good teachers/coaches/etc. are such a blessing. It's wonderful that you are doing such an awesome thing thing for them. This is another example of the wonderful generosity of our DVC family.

Kudos to you and to the parents who are chipping in for the park hoppers. I hope they have a wonderful vacation!

I'll second that Cinderelli. I think this must be a very special teacher to get such special treatment. From a daughter of two teachers we were never able to afford trips to WDW. Living in CA my parents budgeted all year to be able to afford an overnight trip to Dineyland for them and us three kids. That was a huge expense but one we looked forward to each year. I think your school must have wonderful parents to treat a teacher to WDW. Good for you!

I love the crockpot idea as well. I use them all the time at home and have never had any problems. I might just pack mine to take in July - if it will fit.

MikDor thanks for suggesting this and for possibly doing the trade offs. I love these boards as you find the nicest people who are DVC members.

Thanks to Cinderelli and Disney Hot Mama for the nice words and encouragement. I actually decided at the end of last year that we should do this for the band teacher for 2 reasons: his father took him to the Magic Kingdom on opening day(in '74?), and his father passed away 2 years ago, which was very difficult for the band director. And I know he makes nothing! As far as getting the money for the tickets, I am amazed at the varying response so far. There are @90 band students, so another parent and I sent out a mailing asking for $10 per student towards the trip. One parent gave $100(she obviously appreciates this teacher as much as I), one parent gave $50, and another 35+ kids donated. The mother of a non-donating child actually told me she did not like the band director, and her child had decided not to contribute anything! I was floored, because we are planning to present the gift as being from the entire band. While I certainly anticipated that not all kids could afford to contribute(this town has been struggling economically for some time), I was not prepared for a response such as that. One parent graciously donated the $10 without question, even though I knew he was not as fond of the teacher as some, and I suspect that this was the case for one or two other parents as well. But all things considered, the positive responses have greatly exceeded the negative, and we are looking forward to letting him know in May that he is "Going to DisneyWorld!!!"

The danger is not in the use of the pot itself, but in the fact that Disney would not have any control over it being defective. Disney has a very high safety standard it adheres to and when guests bring their own cooking devices in then they lose that control to keep everyone safe.

I am sure you can do it and get away with it since there is no daily housekeeping, but I am sure if you call the resort and ask if it's ok to bring one, they will tell you no.

I have to wonder if you do and something happens are you liable for all the damages? Not a risk I would be willing to take.

I would love to see crockpots in the villas. Its so much easier to cook something in the am. As far as danger is concerned, If I remember correctly the ovens have the auto timers ( at least in OKW they did) To me that is just as dangerous and if DVC supplied them they could handle the "maintenance, safety" issue that was mentioned.

I would think that inadvertenly leaving an open burner on the stove on would be more dangerous than a low-temperature, covered slow cooker, that has no open heating elements and is designed to cook for 8 to 10 hours.

Wouldn't that thinking also apply to the appliances that Disney already supplies in the Villas? Couldn't there be a bad coffeemaker, a toaster that shoots sparks, malfunctioning ovens and stoves?

Gotta agree with Deb in IA (go Hawkeys!)...a crock pot isn't any more dangerous than the other appliances already in the villas. Disney doesn't have any control over the safety of the other appliances either (other than choosing the brand).

Actually I believe it would be more safe if Disney did supply the crock pots...they would be new and up-to-date...and there wouldn't be folks bringing their own 25 year old version (these things last forever!) with iffy wiring, etc.

I seriously doubt a crock pot is a major fire hazzard. What about people forgetting to turn off a curling iron.. or tossing a towel a bit to close to a coffee maker that has been left on..or even someone smoking (not flaming anyone here..so don 't bite me. )
