I need to make pulled pork for Saturday dinner. I was thinking about starting it tonight (late), in the crock-pot, and letting it cook over night. In the morning, I can take it out, let it cool, and pull it in time for dinner.

Anyone ever done this?

I usually let my crock pot run during the day, but not for any real reason. I'd think you would be fine letting it run at night, if that's your concern.

yep, I do it all the time. I put something in the crockpot before I go to bed and let it cook all night- usually around 8 hours. I then send it into work with DH for his lunch and I take some for my lunch and put some in DD's lunch. If there is any leftover, I put it in the fridge for the next day. easy peasy.

Waking up to the glorius smell of bbq, roast beef or anything else yummy is a wonderful thing.

Why can't you just put it in the morning so it wil be done at dinner time?

Yeah...I guess what's the difference if I'm gone all day, or if I'm sleeping at night. I don't know...I've just never done it that way before. It feels weird! LOL:lmao:

I've got a huge pork butt to cook, and when you pull it, it is VERY hot. Trying to avoid burned fingers and still eat on time. The last time I cooked it during the day, it took longer than I expected and wasn't done in time.

Thank you!:thumbsup2

I always pull pork when it's still warm. Should I let it cool first?

I've let the crockpot run at night before so that I could take a dish to a potluck or dinner the next day.

To help me sleep better, I just make sure that there's nothing near it and that it's in a safe place with the cord not hanging down. I used to keep it on my stovetop center since the wall behind it was fireproof. (Original owner had a coal stove there in the 1920's. They "insulated" with concrete inside that wall.)

It does smell nice, but the smell wakes you up in the morning with hunger, lol.

I think it's fine to pull it when it's warm...I just always end up having to pull it when it's completely hot. My fingers get burned, and it's extremely messy! I thought if I could let it cool some ahead of time, it might be easier. Never done it this way before, so it may, or may not, work!

Oh, I see. I make pulled pork often and I have never thought of doing it overnight. I just cook it all day, shred/pull and then let sit for a little longer in the crockpot and then serve. I've never burned my fingers :)

I wouldn't run it overnight but thats because I'm paranoid. If I'm home during the day and something happens, I'm awake. If I'm not home then at least we would be safely somewhere else.

I've made chili during the night and brought it to a pot-luck lunch at work the next day. No problems!

I cook it like the OP suggested all the time without any trouble at all. Once the pork is slow cooked it can be reheated and eaten whenever without any loss of yumminess, just add some more BBQ. I don't like having food on all day without being home either, it just makes me nervous.

I'd appreciate if someone could share their pulled pork crockpot recipe!

To me, the difference is if you're gone all day and the crock pot cord shorts out and causes a fire in your home you don't get hurt or die. If you have it on while you're sleeping and it starts a fire you may get hurt or die.

I know to some that seems paranoid, I don't care.

Personally, I rarely use a crock pot anymore. Mine is over 30 years old, still works great but I wouldn't trust it overnight. I wouldn't sleep well.

I make bbq beef in my crock pot-it's awesome-and I shred it with two forks.

I use a 4 or 5 pound boneless pork roast--either butt or shoulder. Season it, then put it in your crock. Mix 3/4 cup of barbecue sauce with a can of coke and pour on top. Make sure the roast is covered with that mixture, then cook all day. Shred with two forks and return the meat to the crock with the rest of the bottle of barbecue sauce. Heat the sauce through and serve on rolls. Yum yum!

That's how I shred pork, too. I do cut it into manageable sized chunks after cooking, but I don't usually use my hands.

We're dieting, so I made a delicious low-fat version of this just yesterday. I didn't use the crockpot because there wasn't enough time, but the kids loved this version and it was fast!

Season a pork loin roast ($2/lb) with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic and onion powders, and olive oil.
Convection Roast for 20 mins at 400 degrees, then lower the heat to 325 and cook for 1 hour.
(I use a meat thermometer.)

When it's done, let it rest five minutes, then cut into chunks and shred.
Toss with 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 cup prepared BBQ sauce.
Serve on Martin's Potato dinner rolls with fresh cole slaw on top. (Go easy on the mayo in the slaw.)

We had a garden salad on the side to round out the meal. Delicious and pretty nutritious with the salad.

I like the crockpot version too:
Season as above and cook with a 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 cups of BBQ sauce and 1 cup apple juice or cider. It takes at least 8 hours to cook in the crockpot.

I try the two forks method, but I just can't do it right! I end up ripping it apart with my hands, or holding it with a hand and tearing it with a fork. I don't know what is wrong with me! :guilty::rotfl:

Well if something is wrong with you then something is wrong with me too. LOL I can't tear it apart with 2 forks either, I have to do it with my hands or by cutting it....LOL :)

Add me to the can't pull pork properly club... But I always make my oatmeal overnight in the crockpot and I have never had a problem. I have also made homemade tomato paste overnight. If you are worried about it being on that long, it's okay. And if your timing is off, I would feel more at ease doing it overnight and reheating before serving. Enjoy your meal!!!
