crimes on board?

i wasn't thinking it was safer because it was Disney - well maybe i was but only because it was more of a family ship then a party ship - i guess i was just hoping that since there aren't too many reports of anything that it meant that security delt with it properly.

as for the leaving stuff in strollers at WDW - that's just either really trusting people or their nuts. i wasn't even all that sure about leaving our stroller there - it wasn't cheap and i wondered if someone would try to walk off with it but no one did :thumbsup2

people let their gaurds down when they are on holiday - and especially at Disney i've noticed. just makes ya wonder.....

has a ship ever sunk.
Disney has only had two ships and neither has sunk. That is not to say that it won't happen. Each time you cruise before you set sail you must attend a safety drill/ This is to assure everyone on board knows what to do and where to go in an emergency.

A few years back on one of our 7 day cruises, there were illegal drugs being passed and used by a group of teens. Apparently they had been obtained at one of the ports of call.

My DD's were saavy enough to leave this group when this occurred, but many stayed.

The final morning when we were finishing breakfast, the authorities at Port Canaveral boarded the ship with the drug sniffing dogs. They were headed on the hot foot right towards the aft, where this had occurred.

Don't know the final outcome, but I imagine it was not good.

I always treat the ship like a small city. There will be crime, there will be a mix of people. Always have your guard up and keep your children educated as well. Doesn't mean you cannot enjoy your cruise, but don't kid yourself into thinking it is Utopia.

I think of several of my friends back in college who were assaulted on dates and never reported it for fear of the embarrassment it would bring. They had been drinking a little and were taken advantage of. This also happened to friends in high school. They never reported it.

No matter the cruiseline, I will never let my daughter sign herself out or walk unescorted around the ship no matter how much I may trust her. When I think of the posts about security cameras, I only can think of Carlie Brucia whose abduction was caught on camera.

People are fooling themselves if they think the camera are monitored 24/7. There are just too many cameras and too many areas to watch to be considered "security". I don't want footage to be examined after the fact with my child.

I would rather be the most unpopular mom in the world than take a chance with my most prized possession. I promise we will still manage to enjoy our cruise.

I also treat the ship like a city. There is crime every where but I chose to allow my grandkids some freedom. If parent do not teach kids how to be safe in public the kids don't know how to handle freedom when they are adults.

That being said each family must make the decision of what their children can do or not. It has been my experence that there is less crime on the Magic then in most US neighborhood. However we should not put our head in the sand and assume that because it is Disney that the staff are all safe prople and that all other cruiser are safe. Most criminal have families and what better place for a person to find a child to victimize than on a ship full of kids of all ages. On the other hand ther are also many people on board and if a kid screamed I have no doubt that several parents would come to the aid of the child.

On the two cruises my grandkids have been allowed freedom to come and go we have had no problems but we had a system where the adults knew at all times where they were. The one time the 10 year old forgot to sign out she lost her abilty to have that freedom for 24 hours. Trust me she never forgot again.

We took our first cruise a few months back. One of the nights my Dh and I went up to the cove, Dh wanted a beer and I wanted some fresh air. Our DS was in the Kids club. We sat by the Goofy pool, it was about 9:30p.m. When we noticed a little boy sitting by himself at a close by table. We saw his mom run over to get some towels. Then it happened.... a guy about 28 years old, very odd looking was lingering around the little boy and was like rehursing to himself what he was gonna say to this little boy. And it made myself and my DH very uncomfortable. He was starring at the little boy and touched himself, not realizing we were watching. My DH sat and watched the situation while I ran and told a Cast member and got the kids mother and told her. She ran back to the table and went in side to get on an elevator. The guy followed them. I did find out cast members intervened. However I saw the guy the next day and was disgusted that he was allowed to walk around the ship. We stayed far away from him. He still has no idea we even saw him. The little boy was about 7 years old.

My eyes welled up with tears while reading this post ~ I am going to be very careful with my 10-almost 11 year old this February. Thank God you were there to intervene and hopefully prevent something tragic from happening.
Thank You from one mother to another.........

Thank God you were there but that is why we need to teach our children to be safe. They will not always have the shelter of the family home. I am glad to know that there are others out there that would look out for others as well. I know as a parent and a grandparent I will not hesitate to stop a child from running at the pool or climbing on the railing and other risking behavior if I do not see a parent near by. Anytime you get a group of people together you are going to have those who do not abide by the same social code. It is a shame that it seems to be getting much worse over time because who is teach the kids. For too many kids it isn't the parents or the church. The only training they get is in school and teachers do not have the time to install a moral code into a child.

I do give my grandkids freedoms on the ship but I believe they are at the same risk in their neighborhoods and at school. I hope and pray that I and thier parents have given them the training to do the right thing and to keep themselves safe from those that want to harm them. However, this is a decision that only a parent can make for their children.

Although nothing has ever happened to me (knock on wood), on the shuttle bus after my first cruise, I heard a teenage girl crying because someone had stolen not her purse, but all the money in it. Although we all like to beleive that nothing can happen on a Disney ship because it's DISNEY, just remember that ANYONE can sail on a Disney ship.

I have to add a more positive note here. I left a 6 yr old in the Mickey Pool to get something drink just at the time he decided he needed the washroom. Having just boarded he didn't know where to go and I returned to find a half dozen 'Moms' all offering him assistance. I am sure 99% of Disney passengers are kind-hearted, family types which doesn't argue against due caution, of course.
