Creme Caramel Custard..for SCHOOL!?

She was given a week, it isn't the teachers fault. She didn't look at it until last night.

IMO when you volunteer for something you should make what is asked for or don't volunteer. I can't imagine trying to run something that everyone just takes it on their own to substitute whatever they feel like!

In fact there was a thread where a teacher was complaining about parents doing this very thing and for some reason everybody on that thread was agreeing with the teacher, that parents should send in what was asked. Now I see all these do what you want, send what you want. so which is it :confused3

She did not volunteer.

Consider yourself lucky--while in high school in French 3, we had an authentic French meal. I had to bring a dish that involved cooking rabbit. Have you ever tried to locate rabbit in the store? LOL We lived in the city, but in an agricultural county. My Mom had a co-worker whose husband hunted and stored frozen rabbits.

I cooked it, served it, and didn't take one bite of it.

I realize that this assignment is more for mom than your son but unfortunately that is how it is.

As others have said, you were given a weeks notice by the teacher and for some reason you didn't look at it until Sunday night. Sorry, but that is not the teacher's fault. AND....please don't use the excuse that you work full time. So do other mothers whether they get paid for it or not. This just hit a sore spot with me. I can't even begin to tell you how often I have heard this excuse. Yes, I realize you can't do something during the day because you are at a job but this is asking you to do something after work and you have had plenty of time to accomplish this.

However, it is hard to make things that require special dishes and it is a fund raiser and it isn't possible for you to borrow the cups because how would you get them back. I hope you can find something disposable to serve them in.

I remember my daughter volunteered me to make hummus. OMG! I could have killed her. I looked up the recipe and saw that it was way out of my comfort range. I ended up calling the teacher and asking if I could just buy it. She said yes and she was sorry about it. But my daughter was so set on me making it. Yes, she thought I could do everything.

I hope it all works out and you and your son can work on this together. It wasn't clear if not looking at it until Sunday was your decision or your son's but either way there is a lesson to be learned here.

Good luck

we have ramekins and a torch because we love creme brulee...
like a previous posted said go out and buy cheap disposable ramekins at either walmart or party city. In the grocery store, Dr. Oetker has a cheap custard/creme brulee mix in a box including a caramel sugar topping. Your big expense is gonna be whipping cream.

:confused3 okay, so he didn't just bring it home? A weeks notice - I would make it. My requirement is that I should always know prior to my weekly shopping trip.

I think you could use something other than ramekins or get them at the Dollar store possibly. Good luck. I'd do it. I can always use another cool recipe that I know how to make. Sounds good anyway.

OK--so during my lunch break I ran to the grocery store and bought the creme brulee package (thanks to whoever suggested that!) along with the whipping cream.

Got home early from work (6:30pm--yeah!!), made dinner (sauteed chicken breast with white wine reduction sauce and mushooms and asparagus--see, I can cook!), threw in a load of laundry and then made the creme brulee.

Poured them into disposable muffin tins,(sorry, no ramekins to be found), melted the camelized sugar and topped it with that.

Now off to pack for my conference!

Thanks for those with the helpful suggestions!

I am so glad there was a happy ending :) You got it all done and made a great dinner besides!

French deserts are expensive! Yep sounds like a few of the things we have had to make in the past for French. What is the fundraiser for? will your son benefit? and who picked what to make? did your son volunteer you? My friends son volunteered her to make something similar one time. Are they selling french deserts at an international food fair?

If you truly aren't going to participate I would hope you would send a note in Tomorrow so they teacher is aware and isn't stuck on Wednesday when they don't have your contribution.

If they are selling or serving legitimate French desert then they do not want jello cups! It would not be appropriate.

There are no "deserts" in France.:thumbsup2
