Creme Caramel Custard..for SCHOOL!?

Hmmm....well, if the notice was sent on Thursday of last week, I think you had plenty of time to notify the teacher that you wanted to make something else. It's not her fault that you or your son waited until the last minute to check the recipe. I think that deciding now you're not comfortable/prepared to make the creme caramel is unfair to the teacher.

Personally, I'd suck it up, buy some disposable ramekins, and make the creme caramel. I've made it lots of times, and it's really not that hard or time-consuming.

I must be missing something, I don't see why it is at all important to the teacher that the exact dessert that she requested be sent in. Any dessert considered French should be just fine, requiring a parent bake an exact recipe is ridiculous.

Could I use muffin tins? Honestly, it's the ramekins that is making it challenging for me.

I would send it back with a nice note saying Fat Chance.

I am a teacher and I agree.

I have never made creme caramel, but here's my take:

If it doesn't need to be baked, I would use plastic cups. If it does need to go in the oven, I would get disposable aluminum pans- even a muffin pan and just cut them apart!

Or just make crepes with Nutella. Who could turn that down? IMO that is as French as French gets lol. They sell them on every Parisian street corner.

Can you find a bakery that makes these?

I think that would be easiest.

I guess I am on the fence with this one, but just for reference if you choose to make them, you can get foil ramekins at the grocery store. They are not cheap, but they don't quality as expensive either. Just like if you were making cupcakes and had to buy cupcake holders...

Why are people jumping down your back for volunteering when it seems like you were voluntold...oh dis wolves are hungry.
OP contact the teacher and see if they have any ramekins for you if the teacher wants it made then ask if they have some materials, also ask why you must get apple juice and creme caramel custard for a bakesale that doesn't benefit your children ei yi yi.
In my schools it was always your kids fundraised for themselves or something that benefited the whole school not for other kids. It's like buying happy meals for everyone in grade 8 but none for the 5th graders!

My thoughts:

Son shouldn't be volunteering you for fundraisers after school hours that require YOU to do something.

Depending on his age, if this was for something in class--HE should be making it, not you.

It sounds too time consuming a dish (and perhaps, pricey, especially since you don't own ramekins), to have been assigned.

And I do own ramekins--little glass dishes perfect for mise en place cooking.:thumbsup2 (aka setting out all of your ingredients all measured out ahead of time and then when you actually make the dish--you just dump the ramekin as you go...)

There are other french desserts that are easier--at least to buy.

Eclairs anyone?

I've seen little disposable foil cups at the grocery store - very inexpensive but I don't know if they would work or not. I would be ticked that they were telling me to make something I had never made before. I don't mind if they give me a category but let me make something I'm comfortable making.

Thanks for the help.

I didn't sign up for this. Each class was assigned to bring something.

Unfortunately for me, I live in a rural town so no bakery for me. Also, the closest Walmart is 35 min away so it's not like I can just quickly go pick up the ramekins.

Hopefully I'll have time during the day today to go figure something out. I'm thinking a modified version with the packaged flan and then drizzling caramel on top.

Thanks again.

You cannot use muffin tins. You need disposible aluminum cups thats sides are straight up and down. Our dollar store sells them, 12/$1 so they are not terribly pricey.

You can make them at home using aluminum foil and a cup or container of approx. the right size and shape. Just make sure the side are perfectly vertical.

This website tells you how.

What about a buche du Noel?? It's really good, relatively easy to make, and I don't recall the ingredients being excessive.

If you're not feeling it, ITA with the PP who recommended you declined the request and ask for better notice next time around.

She was given a week, it isn't the teachers fault. She didn't look at it until last night.

IMO when you volunteer for something you should make what is asked for or don't volunteer. I can't imagine trying to run something that everyone just takes it on their own to substitute whatever they feel like!

In fact there was a thread where a teacher was complaining about parents doing this very thing and for some reason everybody on that thread was agreeing with the teacher, that parents should send in what was asked. Now I see all these do what you want, send what you want. so which is it :confused3

I remember having to bake baguettes for my high school French class. It was fun, but A LOT of work. If your son is in high school or even middle school, then he should be the one cooking the dessert.

If this will be a graded assignment, then it should be home baked and not store bought.
