Is there a way to get your credit score for free without having to give them credit or debit card information? Is there a site that is particularly more safe about this?

I did this about 3.5 months ago when I decided to buy a home. I searched and googled and never did find one. I ended up with FreeCreditReport -- if you cancel within 10 days there's no charge.

More scary than your credit card number is giving up your SSN. :scared1: But... no nefarious activity to report. All is well. I didn't cancel so I COULD see what kind of activity would be reported. I actually applied at two places (the builder's lender and my own bank) to see which would be a better deal and those two "hard inquiries" have been the only reports thus far.

What I did find interesting was the website reported my credit a good 20 points below the report I received from the banks.

There are credit score estimators available for free, many call these scores Faco Scores. Unless you purchase your Fico score from Equifax, Transunion or My FICO you aren't receiving your true credit score. Experian the third of the three major credit agencies no longer sells or provides Fico scores.

What I have done in the pass is purchased my score from Equifax and Transunion when I have gone in to pull my free annual credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com. I have also purchased my credit report and credit score from My Fico.com. I did use my debit/credit card to pay.

As for being safe any of the agencies web sites would be safe as they already every detail of your credit history.

I did hear on CNN the Clark Howard Show that the government is going/trying to pass a Bill that will allow one free credit score from the three mojor credit agencies a year, similar to the free annual credit reports.

I went through creditkarma.com a while ago to get my score. They don't give you a full report, just the score. And it was free.

The score that creditkarma gives isn't a true fico credit score, it's more of a estimated score and not what any banks or financial institution use.

You can't even get your FICO score based on Experian data from Myfico.com any more. Experian and Fair Isaac no longer have an agreement. Lenders still can but you can't. Experian only provides a score called the Vantage score through their website or by phone or you can get a Plus score from freecreditreport.com (also Experian) and this is the one you have to cancel within a certain amount of time to keep from being charged.

I suppose that if they pass getting a free annual score then it still won't be a FICO score. You can however get scores based on the FICO formula from the other two credit bureaus.

Quizzle.com, from Quicken. Free score, free report, no strings. Limited to once every 180 days, but still free.
