I was at a local grocery store today. I had a Visa rebate card for $60 that I was going to use to pay part of the bill. I slid the card and was told her it was for $60. I got the signature prompt and it said the amount charged was $0. On the cash register it said it charged the full part. I told her to redo the transaction, but she said she couldn't:confused3.

I asked to see a manager who told me once it got to the signature prompt that there was nothing they could do anymore and I would have to pay it. I didn't want to sign something that I wasn't sure of and asked her what if I couldn't pay it? She told me that the charge would go through without my signature...so what point is me signing it:confused3

The kicker when the receipt was printed. They made me sign that...

Anything like that happen to you??

Sounds strange, but did you only pay the difference OOP??

You can always call the number on the back of the card to see if there's anything remaining. Maybe it was showing the balance after the amount charged??

Your post is a bit confusing.

You had a rebate card that is not your credit card or it is your credit card and you had a $60 rebate credit on it??

Why didn't you just return all of the groceries if the rebate credit wasn't applied to the transaction? That's what I'd have done. It's just like buying a shirt in a store. You can return it for a refund if It takes about a week for the refund to post to your cc account, but you WOULD HAVE gotten the refund.

Often times rebate cards come from other companies for signing up with their product. I got one once through Rent.com on the last apartment. The apartments were listed within their site, so I "claimed my reward". It took about 8 weeks to fully process, but one day in the mail I received a $100 VISA gift card. It's accepted like a credit card, but you can only use up to the amount on the card.

Because it's through VISA and not a particular store, they don't know how much is remaining on the card, and if the purchase price is too high the card would decline. It's important you pay attention to your remaining balance so you use it all up.

She probably told the cashier to do $60 on the card, and the rest in another form of payment. Target card machines now ask "would you like the full amount on this payment type", which allows you to use multiple forms of payments more easily. Such a 1/2 credit and 1/2 cash, or 1/2 store gift card and 1/2 credit.
I've done it a hundred times before, not enough in my pocket and not enough in the bank account to cover the full amount, but will if I use both forms of payments.

Usually when it reaches the signature screen, it means that the card has been pre-approved for the amount. Once you sign, then the transaction is completed and a receipt printed. And yeah, signing is a bit pointless. I think the CC companies can pull it up if asked for, like during a fraud case. But it's really a moot point.

Yes it looked like a regular Visa credit card and the instructions to use the card were to use it as a credit card. I did tell the cashier to put $60 on it.

I was just surprised that I couldn't cancel the transaction up until the point I had signed it. What if I had only wanted to put $30 on the card? According to the store I couldn't change the amount. What if this had been a regular credit card?

Also my keypad was showing $0 charged while the cash register was showing the full amount charged...

If you wanted her to only take $30 out then you should have said $30. She took $60 because that is what you said.

Ok I think I know what you're asking..you had a rebate card that was run like a credit card, it only had $60 on it but they put the full amount of your groceries on it instead, so instead of $60 they put $75 (just making up a number). I've had this happen to me before...what happens is the issuer will send you a bill for the difference that you will be required to pay via check or maybe credit card. So here's my scenario....we had a rebate card for $25, we spent it at a restaurant and our bill was $35, we left the $25 card (that clearly stated it was worth $25 on the card itself) and an additional $20 to cover the other $10 and the tip, well the restaurant ran the rebate card for the full amount, the server apparently pocketed the $20 as her tip!!!! We got a letter in the mail from AmEx (rebate card issuer) that we owed an additional $10 for the difference, we did call them and tell them what happened and they did not collect the difference from us in the end but man, it was a PITA to get cleared up! So OP, expect to get a letter from the issuer saying you owe the difference.

I deal with this at my job and I also have gotten quite a few Visa rebate cards from At&t. I always use mine to either pay my At&t bill or pay for groceries. These particular cards must be used as a credit trans (which you did) and where I shop, the system recognizes the balance on the card, automatically deducts that amount from the total of the bill, and lets me pay the balance in another form. I'm not sure all stores electronic payment systems are set up this way, however.
If the cashier cancels the transaction, it wouldn't matter because there is a hold put on the funds and you would not be able to access the $60 on the card anyway until the hold is dropped (in other words, when the card issuer realizes the merchant does not want to be paid for this transaction). Merchants require a signature in the case of a dispute of charges; if the pin pad did not accept your signature, they would have you sign the receipt that came out of the register (which is what my employer does).
Did you call the customer service number on the back of the card to check the balance? I'm curious as to what the end result is for your situation.
