Credit Card Stolen after Booking

We recently booked a Wishes Desert Party for August 1st. The next day our credit card company called to inform us that over $500 had been charged to several different stores. I called to let Disney know what had happened and they did not seem to care. I only called them so they would be aware that someone had stolen the numbers and used them to make purchases.

Credit card numbers can be stolen anywhere, there isn't any way for Disney to be certain it was done by a Disney employee, or by which employee. While they may have "seemed not to care" there isn't much they can do. The fraud department of your credit card company knows where the card was used.

Wanted all Disers to be aware. Check your Credit Card bills online after a purchase!

We are 100% sure that it happened at Disney. The card stolen is rarely used and it had been over 2 months since it was used last before I booked. I think it might be on file for our DVC .

As Nala said, it is up to your credit card company/bank fraud department to investigate. My hubby is a bank supervisor, and believe me when I say that credit card fraud departments (here in Canada anyway), are amazing to work with. They will investigate and contact Disney, and they will have more clout in dealing with it than you. I would definitely keep up with your credit card company, and make sure they investigate properly, so that they can get this info to Disney.

If someone at Disney has stolen the card (it has been happening), they can investigate it through authorized channels.

So sorry this happened to you - hubby still says credit cards are the safest as they are constantly monitored.

This is terrible :sad2: I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you. I hope your CC bank can get it all cleared up soon for you & you have a great trip inspite of this violation

At least they only charged 500 bucks worth of crap. My credit card company called me a while back to inquire if I was in Poland trying to buy a new BMW? No, I am in Germany, you called me and I am a Mercedes Benz girl:) Visa took care of it rather quickly and I do monitor my stuff to ensure that my identity hasn't been completely stolen.

Just got off the phone with Discover and they are taking off all the charges. They did say if it had been Visa/Mastercard we would not got everything taken off. They said other cards have a deductable? Is that true? Thanks so much for the info Tiger! All the charges were being made in Cali. It was probably Hook using the card. My DD7 was Wendy at the Halloween party at DLR last Oct. and he was not nice to her. Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Cards that have never been used can be stolen, as someone said it is not definite that it was Disney related.

Checking your accounts often is good advice though. Our Visa does not have a deductible, so that info is not correct.

That is CRAZY! You know why? When I booked my vacation a couple of months ago, the exact same thing happened to me, I book ASM instead of POP by mistake(which I didnt realize until a week after I booked, I swear I was on the POP page, NOT ASM), so I called to switch hotels, and the gentleman asked for my credit card number on the phone to do the switch. This was around 11am. At 4/5pm that night I get a call from walmart.com asking if I just purchased a TV online with my credit card I said H*LL NO! The last time I had used the card before I called Disney was about 2 months before that, and had never had a problem! I would really hate to think someone would do that but it was a strange coincidence. I never called Disney World to report it, b/c for all I know it was just a coincidence, and The disney rewards card fraud department was super helpful, sent me a new card right away. WEIRD!

That's great! I will disagree about VISA though - I think they are just speaking ill about their competition. :thumbsup2 Hubby's bank uses VISA and they are beyond vigilant. I'm also positive that no cards here in Canada have deductibles either - we've had lots of different cards (Gold, Platinum, etc.) and never a deductible. VISA usually covers it all - my hubby will tell you that the amount of write-offs that VISA does is astronomical!

Glad it worked out, Tiger :)

I'm sooo sorry that this happened to you. I can't speak for Mastercard but I know that there isn't a deductable for Visa. A few months ago I had 4 round trip plane tickets to the United Kingdom and China charged to my credit card. I got a full refund for the amount but stuff like this is extremely frustrating.

First off, this kind of thing stinks (to put it midly) and I do feel for you that it happened.

Secondly, most stolen numbers are not used immediately (with most being either skimmed a la the OKW/SSR person or through web-based virii that send keylogging info to another network). Even though you haven't used the card in months, does not mean the last time you used it is the root. It very well could be, but it's actually not the most likely. (The reasons for this are numerous, from throwing victims and investigators off the track to simple logistics). Any time you use any sort of card, online, over the phone, even in person, there's that chance. It's best to keep vigilant no matter if you're using the card actively or not.

And yes, there have been many cases where entire shipments of cards were already compromised before they got to the intended receiver.

Now, I'm not saying what the OP is saying is wrong (the only way I'd do that is if I had the proof, which, I obviously don't), just enlightening on other possibilities and informing others of possible dangers :).

Actually the same thing happened to me in April 09. We weren't staying onsite, so when I called to make reservations I called 4 different days. I am 99% positive it was used after one of these transactions. It was actually a small amount that just showed up as an Ebay transaction in CA, I'm in NY. I have heard that people will charge small amounts first to see if you notice. Anyway, I canceled the card and my bank didn't pay the charge.

Nope. My experience with Discover back in the old days is that they lie lie lie, and this comment they made don't help me to think that anything has changed!

Cafeen has it very very right...

And I know that I would far prefer to send my CC info through a trusted website rather than give it out to any CS rep anywhere. CS reps are generally just putting that CC info into a cgi form that's being sent over the internet anyway, AND they have the opportunity to jot down the number while typing...

Yup, this is also true (and for more reasons). Scammers will use the small amounts not only to see if you (or your bank) notices, but also as a means to verify that the account is active and it "works".

Similar thing happened to me, someone tried to spend about $2.34 in TX (I was living in NH at the time). My bank saw it and shut it down. Of course, I was on a business trip to Mobile at the time, so that made things difficult (but I got through).

Yup. Just make sure that you lock down your side of things (Firewall, Script Blocking on untrusted sites, safe browsing, anti-spy/adware, antivirus scans and real-time protection (not Norton or McAfee*)) to make sure nothing nasty is living inside the system and 99% of the time you'll be fine (it's never 100% :p).

Also, on the CS rep side of things, I can personally vouch for my own system security. I know what I have going on and I know how to avoid potential threats. I can't say the same thing for some random CS rep that I don't know. I'd rather take the risk on myself then have to rely on someone else.

*While Norton/Symantec and McAfee are the two most well known and popular brands of AntiVirus, they are consistently the lowest ranking in detection and clean up. Also, have you ever tried to uninstall Norton? Yeah, it may as well be a virus itself.

Oh and...
Cafeen has it very very right...
I never tire of hearing that ;)

I actually just applied for a new credit card and when it came in the mail, the envelope was inconspiciously opened on one end. I was torn on whether I should request a new card or not. Maybe my card number was stolen. Maybe it was just torn in the mail. I ended up requesting a new card.

Credit Card Federal Law stipulate the $50 deductible as the maximum consumer loss. Every major card that I'm aware of will waive that deductible ... Visa/Mastercard/American Express and Discover. They also ALL have very stringent fraud protection controls now that catch most out of character charging pretty quickly. If Discover is telling you otherwise they are blowing smoke up your butt.

I'm sorry your card was stolen but thankfully it was caught very quickly and Discover will handle it.

Sorry for the hassle - we went through this a year ago with our chase disney card :( (try getting a refund on a canceled cruise on a card that doesn't exist anymore :sad2:)

Moving tot he Community Board since not restaurant related

Hope it gets worked out!
