DH was gone to Kentucky last week, and while eating in a rest. at an airport was a victim of credit card scam. Here's the scenario, and then what American Express said to DH after.

DH, brother and father ate, had a few drinks. Waiter comes over with triplicate bill. DH has received these in the past, all "stuck" together as they came out the machine, and signed the first, with the other 2 stuck, and then taken the 2nd two. DH signed through, and handed the slip/card back to the waiter so he could "check the id" which he didnt do, but DH always likes to see if ANYONE would......HA!..anyways, the waiter gives DH back 2 copies, still sort of stuck together. DH folds them up and puts them in his wallet.

Thursday, I'm going over the bills from the trip, and happen to pull the receipt apart, as I only need 1 when the bill comes in to compare. I look down, and 1 is $93.82 the other says $74.29...I look again, one was at 8:51pm the other 8:52 pm. same day, same rest...I'm a bit confuseed, and show DH...he says- hmmm the 93.82 seems right...he thinks back to what they all ordered, and says yup its the 93.82..

He calls American Express, and explains what happened, etc.. American Express rep says that this has been happening a lot lately. What the Waiter did- was have 2 tables, DH's table was 93.82, the other table was 74.29. The other table paid cash. Waiter ran through DH's bill- then IMMEDIATLY ran through the other one. Put them on top of each other, so DH's signature is on BOTH....remember- the credit card company does not receive the receipt from the rest in all places. The waiter pockets the 74.29, and DH gets hit with both bills. A lot of people just pay their bill everymonth, and don't keep track. In this airport, a MAJOR hub for a MAJOR airline, the amount of business travelers, who do not check bills, due to company paying etc... this is most common.

American Express also told DH that a lot of times, they will double run a card. Telling you that "oops that didn't go through, can I swipe that again please".....what are you going to do , say NO? DH was livid... but American Express took the 74.29 off his total due, and DH has faxed the recipets to them, and has sent off copies.

BE CAREFUL!!! I'd hate for this to happen to anyone else.

I raised my voice more than once in a restaurant tonight. With the manager also. My waiter took my debit card. I got tired of waiting and complained up front. In two seconds, he was back at my table and said that their credit card machine wasn't working and they took my card in the back to call it in. I sat there longer and went back up front, again raising my voice to the hostesses. One ran to get the guy who didn't show up and I sat at table again! In a very short time I was back up there and insisted on seeing a manager. He confirmed they're having trouble and have to call them in. Said there were about 10 back there being done. Hmmm...why was I the only one apparently complaining? I even told the manager...how do I know someone isn't back there imprinting my card...or whatever they do! May be a visit to the bank tomorrow morning. And I'm never going back to that restaurant!!

Washington DC 2002

We were eating at a Perkins and dumb me used my Debit Card. I told the waiter Credit. He came back and said the machine wasn't working so punched in my numbers.

Well, every sunday for a month, he or someone used my card for a dollar soda and paid themselves $40 in cash.

I called my bank and I had to file a police report. I called the resturant and got a hold of the owner. He took all my information. In one week he called me back and told me found out an employee was doing it. The owner reimbursed me. He said this never happened before, he was very apologetic. I actually felt bad for him. What an outstanding person though, to believe me and look into it for me.

The bank told me I was really lucky I balance my check book each month. Some people wait to long and you only have 3 months to file a complaint with a debit card.

The bank told me not to use your debit card on vacation, your bank account could be wiped out fast and it is not as protected as a credit card.

Don't ever think it can't happen.

Thanks for warning us. I've never heard of this scam before - it would be so easy for it to happen and you wouldn't even notice it until it was too late!

my credit card company -

SOMEONE HAD CHARGED A SAUSAGE PIZZA (WITH EXTRA SAUCE) ON MY CARD AT 5:55pm this evening -

boy, if i ever catch that booger. i'll make him pay!

d

:hyper:

gypsy ~ I think I know who charged a sausage pizza on your CC!! I think it was Pop Daddy!! I bet there will also be a dry cleaning charge for a shirt on there too by tomorrow!! :teeth: (Please see Pop Daddy's thread about his pizza dinner, entitled "in front of me I have....") ::yes::

somebody would make the connection!:hyper:

i do know, though, what it's like to have something billed to your account that you didn't charge - it's happened to me on two different accounts. but both were internet-related companies. and both card companies took off the charges...
now i check each bill carefully!

Happy Holidays!

d

and i hope pop daddy saved me some 'leftovers'...

Oh Man I planned on using my debt card on vacation !!!

Now maybe I will take travel checks because I dont have a credit card, well I do but not enought for Disney, It only has a $600.00 limit for my hubby for gas ect ect.

I'm glad you figured it out so soon! A few years ago my mom had professional theives get ahold of her AmEx number which was also her business calling card number. In less than 24 hours, they had charged over $3000 in phone calls. There were multihour calls to all over Asia and Africa. AmEx picked up on it and cancelled her number. She, of course, didn't have to pay any of it. But what a hassle! They thought someone photographed or wrote down her number when she had her card out to use a payphone at the airport.

I had the exact thing happen once. At the time we thought it was an honest mistake, but reading this thread makes me realize it may not have been. The credit card company sent it back to the restaurant and it was eventually removed from our bill. I always check my statement against my receipts.

At the time dh didn't notice any extra receipts so I don't think he ever signed anything though.
