Credit card needed??

Recently my hubby cancelled our only credit card after having it stolen. He is now worried about identity theft and wants to cancel our visa check card and doesnt want to take anything more than travelers checks to disney. Do you have to use a credit card for specific things at disney world like character breakfasts, specifically Ohana and Chef Mickeys, and do you need a cc for your resort? I assume ppl do disney all the time that dont use cc but I am nervous now since I have never travelled without one.

Hi!

I understand your worries. You don't need a credit card when checking in but they do give you the option to put one of your cards on your room card so you can have charging privileges. As far as Chef Mickey and Ohana to my understand you don't need a Card, but you will need one for Cindys, Pirate Cruises etc. Have a great time!

I think you can also put cash down on your room for charging as well. Never done it so I can't say for sure.

You can put cash down to charge on the room...which is very nice when you are at the pool. You do need a Charge card to rent a car...not a check card. About cancelling you card after it was stolen...if you shut that account off it will go against your credit score.

The card company said it wouldnt. We have had it for several years and always paid on time. In fact, we have never carried a balance for more than a month. They just stated on our report that we asked to have the account closed. Thank you all who have responded. You have been very helpful!

Not all car rental companies require a credit card. Check the websites.

Some of the character meals and tours require a deposit but they took my debit card info when I called from home.

I did a pre-paid Visa check card instead of travellers checks (got it at my bank) it was easier than carrying around checks and I didn't have to worry about overspending on a credit card or exposing my checking info to the world.

WDW has a card you can put cash/travelers checks down and charge from that card. It isn't the same as a credit card but might make things more convenient.

We used cash/travelers checks only on our trip. We didnt need a car, and we didnt do Cindys or the cruises so it was good for us.

We really have not used our CC much at WDW other than to secure charging rights on our room key and a couple extra purchases, but I would be hesitant to travel with out a CC just in case of an emergany. What if you needed an unexpected flight home or had major car expenses or a medical emergancy that insurance would not pay for up front? About 15 year ago we did not have a CC and needed to secure a hotel room in an emergany and found we could not do so with out a CC. I would just feel better if I had one just in case.

We got rid of our CC's too (not for the same reason - but because we didn't feel right using credit - neither a lender nor a borrower be... If we can't afford to pay cash for it, then we don't need it!)

Regarding car rentals - I called Hertz and they checked my checking/debit card number to see if it was "acceptable" and (after confirming it was) she advised me that I would have a $50 - $200 deposit hold put on my card with the rental (in addition to the hold on the rental/tax amount!) since it was a check card (at the time the car was picked up). She did not know how they decide the amount, but it wouldn't be less than 50 or more than 200.
