My dd (9.5yr) is driving me crazy about shorts. Every morning is the same question about wearing shorts. I keep telling her not till the temp is 80.

My question is what temp to you make your dc wait to wear shorts?

Probably was around 70. It's been a while since I've had control of their clothes. I do see kids going into the middle school in shorts now...and it's cold out! But those are usually the boys with the long baggy shorts on.

If it's sunny and the high temp is going to be 70 or above.:sunny: I prefer 80, but that's because all it takes is a slight breeze to make me breakout in goosebumps.:rotfl:

I wear them all year round (except to work) no matter what the temperature is...I don't like long pants.

Question: Does your DD wear skirts/dresses? What would be the difference then from shorts?

My cut off has always been 70 degrees.

Edited to add - I let DD wear skirts and dresses during the winter, as long as she wears thick tights. When they go outside to play in the winter, they usually wear their snow pants, so she is plenty warm.

My son used to want to wear shorts year round when he was 9. So, unless the temps got below 60 or so, I let him. He would literally wear shorts with a hoodie. :rotfl:

Now, I can't get him to wear shorts, no matter how hot it is. :sad2: We were at Disney last August, and the kid wore jeans. :confused3

The girls don't have a choice... they're still small, and I don't put shorts on them unless the temps are in the 70's or above.

Sunny, 65 or 70. The guys are all warm-blooded. If it is cloudy, it needs to be warmer.

I don't really have a set temp, but I guess I would say around 70. My son likes to wear shorts. He wears them at home all the time.

I thought this was about Washington D.C.? :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :lmao:

So did I. I totally thought it was going to be about if you could wear shorts to the Capital Building or other monuments and attractions.

I don't have a set temp. *I'M* not wearing them until 90 or so and even then I'll usually stick with capris but DS wears them around 75.

When I was younger, I had "winter" shorts that were wool/heavier materials. I wore them with high socks or tights. I even had a pair of red, green, and cream plaid wool shorts that were part of my dressy Christmas outfit for church. :confused3

I love the school uniforms for boys sometimes have shorts for the young ones. I don't know why, but I love that look!

Do you believe in natural consequences ? If you give the control to your daughter and let her decide what to wear she will suffer the consequences. If it is cold and she wears shorts then she will be cold. The next time you tell her it is cold and she may want to change she might believe you.

My DD wore shorts to school today. She only wears long shorts (Bermuda type). It is probably high 60's and sunny today.
My 15yo wears shorts year round.

In fact, my DH only wore blue jeans about 4 times all winter long. So he's kinda nutty also! :)

I tend to agree with this approach. My friend uses it with her son who insitsts on wearing shorts all winter. The school actually called the parents and asked them to make him wear pants. She refused, saying if he was cold, he would either wear pants or be cold. If she isn't concerned about it, the school shouldn't be, either.

My parents were also champions of natural consequences. When I was 6 I decided that if boys could walk around with no shirts on, girls could too. My parents tried to dissuade me, but I would not hear of it. So I trotted off down the street to my friend's house. Her parents would not let me stay and play with her because I didn't have a shirt on. I was humiliated and angry, but I still remember it to this day.

DS is 9, and has always 'run hot'. We had to sign a form at daycare saying we were OK with him taking his coat off outside if he said he was too hot. We always stashed a fleece and sweatshirt in his cubby instead of his big winter coat.

He has been picking out his clothes for several years now, and can wear shorts whenever he feels like it. Mom does have veto power when things completely clash, but otherwise it's all him.

He was wearing shorts and hoodies up until after Thanksgiving this year and we're in New England. And, when he has soccer or basketball practice he has not been wearing track pants over his shorts either for the run from the car to the gym.

DS12 wore shorts yesterday. It was around 50 degrees. I long ago decided it wasn't a battle I was willing to fight and let him wear shorts when he wants to wear them.

I am always on hot, so I tend to wear shorts year round. DD who is 10 also likes to wear shorts year round, so I let her also. She doesn't wear them to school because she is afraid the other kids will tease her, but she will wear them around the house, while DS is always cold and has on heavy sweats!
