I'm "fair" at the game; I'm happy if I get ~20 ghosts each round, total 55-70 in a 3-round game.
Unlike most people, I use the keyboard to play; actually the "alternative" keyboard arrangement. With the mouse I am in NO control whatsoever.
With the keyboard + a good internet connection, I find it pretty easy to navigate, even being able to maneuver between and around "enemy" ghosts. With a slow internet connection, though, ghostification is frequent.
Regarding, getting stuck: I've noticed that (with the keyboard, anyway), I ALWAYS get stuck after "wrapping" around the screen, exiting one side of the screen and re-entering on the other side. I have to let go of the movement keys I was using, press a different movement direction, and THEN continue in the originally intended direction.
I also find it better (for my generally slow computer/internet combo) to only press the CTRL fire key ONCE when I get the near the ghosts, rather than to press it repeatedly while playing.

Anyway, if mouse control is getting frustrating, I'd suggest trying the
alternative keyboard controls (where LEFT makes you go straight left across the screen, and pressing BOTH LEFT+DOWN makes you go diagonal left + down the screen). You need to hold combinations of direction keys down throughout the game, but if with my slow connection and computer I can play fairly decently, I'm sure anyone else can too.

I feel your frustration about the game. My husband came into the office the other night because he heard me pounding my arrow keys when I had become stuck again.
Try making your mouse do a circle around the circle in the game and you will become unstuck and be able to move to where you need to go. I also have been finding that I am better able to move if I get close to a ghost, click the shift or ctrl key only once, and then move toward the ghost.
