Crazy car rental rates

We are coming down to FL in April. We are arriving at West Palm Beach and leaving from Ft Lauderdale. We are staying for a week. Our rate for picking up a car at WPBeach and dropping off at FtLauderdale is around $400 (no city specials for dollar even!). When I put in the same dates for p/u and drop off at WPB it's still around $400 for the week. When I put in p/u and drop off at FtLauderdale it's around $150 for the week. Is this is because WPB is an affluent area? The airports are not that far away. Why so high in one area and not the other? Something doesn't seem right? Any suggestions?

Have you tried Costco or BJ's? Sometimes their rates are better. Are you an AARP member? I read a thread that someone did very well with an AARP discount. There is also Mousesavers.com. A website all about Disney and if you click onto transportation and then rental cars, it eventually leads you to coupon codes and contract id numbers for Avis, National, Alamo, etc. However, I did not find any listed on Mousesavers to work on National. I called National customer service and they said those coupons had reached their limit/max. And their expiration dates were in June and July 2014! There are many threads here about car rentals. Search everyday and often. Don't give up.

Thanks Sandy for the info. We don't belong to BJ's or Costco but will try mousesavers. Hope we don't have to pay $400 for a car we are not really going to even use that much.

Hey Kanbdb....just read a thread that someone got a 7 week rental @ Dollar for month of May for $110. A Dodge Avenger. Thread is new. Someone asked about coupon/codes but no response about that yet.

Not 7 week rental. 7 day rental in May. Sorry about that. I can't type and listen to my daughter at the same time.
