I just looked up airfare to visit my sister and nephew that live in orlando i live in new jersey i go out of newark i looked up united coach class i looked up for july my nephew's birthday united ewr-mco round trip coach is $867!!!!! what in the world is wrong with these airlines???!!!!!OMG!!!!

That is crazy! I used to live near Newark and now live in Orlando. I usually travelled between those two places for around $200. Check Allegiant that flys from Allentown into Sanford airport (almost the same distance from Disney to MCO). I also think either Allegient or Frontier flys from Trenton.

Well, it is on the early side to book a July trip so the price is probably at it's peak right now (and it will go back to that shortly before the trip), but there's no mystery as to what's going on. Nothing "wrong" with the airlines. It's fuel prices and lots of demand for flight and airlines aren't back to 100%, so supply and demand.

I’m not sure airlines are going to increase capacity with fuel prices continuing to rise. The predictions for oil prices in 2023 are frightening. Demand will eventually fall because the middle class simply can’t afford it. There will continue to be less flights and prices will continue to rise.
Travel while you still can people.

By that point, we'll be in a recession. The last time gas prices soared like these we had entered one.

We booked flights to Cabo for early summer back in early January...before the war started. We got two round trip business seats for less than 2 grand...round trip. Bit of a splurge, but haven't traveled since 2019...and the travel fund is pretty flush these days. Same flights now...business, $5200. It's insane. We booked our Costa Rica trip for December right around that same period and got similar priced seats on United...haven't checked those recently, but I'm betting they're also way up there. Glad we booked when we did and got the splurges out of our system for now....because there's no way I'd pay $5,200 for the two of us RT to Cabo.

Yes...these prices are going to get out of reach for a lot of people very soon. Some people haven't done much in the last two years, so they have the funds. Covid relief has dried up for the most part, but keep in mind that there are millions of Americans who have not had to pay their student loan payments in two years...so I'm thinking that is playing a part in keeping the party going. That's supposed to end in September...but likely won't until well after the mid-terms are over...probably early next year. Then...it'll be back to reality for a lot of people. I think recession is likely next year....the Fed seems to be taking us in that direction.

Fares aren't going down and flights are being sold out. This has been our experience this year.

Don't limit yourself to one airline. That's the biggest mistake people make when booking that leads them to overpay. Look at what the competition is offering, and be flexible with your dates/days of the week.

The Fed has to raise interest to match inflation in order to get inflation under control. The problem is were a debt-based economy and everyone(people, government, businesses, corporations) are up to their eyeballs in debt. I see lots of pain ahead, but hopefully, we'll come out on the other side in a better place. It's been obvious for years this was not sustainable.

With record demand, airlines can charge more -- and do.

There are many airports within a 3-hour drive of Orlando. Sometimes it is worth the time and drive if you can save hundreds.

Jacksonville, Tampa and Sanford could be considered.

Breeze Airways, Frontier and Allegient may have flights for less.

Good luck!

It makes people unable to move too. Who wants to sell their home, pay the real estate fees and moving fees, and then get debt that costs twice as much?

Well, not sure I agree with people being up to their eyeballs in debt. According to the Federal Reserve personal savings soared during the pandemic. People stuck at home with nowhere to spend their money, and the government gave each of us thousands of dollars in stimulus money. I was furloughed and made more in unemployment benefits with all the pandemic add ons that I would have made working.
Best example. There is a shortage of new cars. Buyers are willing to pay way over sticker price if they can find out. $10,000 over sticker is the going rate here. Pend up demand and money in the bank is the current situation. But it won't continue forever for sure, and things will crash. But I bet it is late 2023 or 2024 before that happens.

I looked up July 6-12, United, O'Hare to MCO round trip, $356 coach, $674 first class.

Using google flights I see $377 on Spirit and $388 on Jet Blue...Newark to MCO non-stop...round trip....for those same dates. OP didn't say what dates they wanted, but I'd suggest using google flights...which also shows the entire month and what days are cheapest to fly.

If you're looking at Jacksonville, might as well add Daytona and Melbourne.

Do you have anything to back up the bolded? We are cruising in July. I started stalking airfare last August. Ended up booking Delta in February for $292. $18 more than the lowest. Current prices are over $300 for Allegiant/Frontier and over $400 for the legacy airlines.
