Most of the coloring books my DGD and I use have lots of animals and such in them that require the color black and we use them up pretty quickly..

I thought maybe you were making those scratching pictures where you color a sheet of paper a bunch of different colors, color completely over it with black and then scratch a picture on it (so the black scratches away and you just see the color).

Just about any teacher supply store (and many craft stores) will also sell boxes of just one color if you do not want to order online.

The scratch of pictures are fun--just make sure you press hard on the underneath colors. I am amazed you have never heard of them.

Oh, I've never done that w/ black crayon. We alsoways used colored crayons and painted over w/ black tempera paint.
