Cracked I-phone glass/what are the repair options?

We did not buy the insurance on the phone. The warranty does not cover breakage. The phone still works and the glass on the outside is smooth but it is cracked underneath.

Have found a local place that will repair for $149 and 6 mos warranty on their work but we've never heard of them. I found an old thread on the Budget Board where several people recommended the Apple store but the thread was a few years old. Something is telling me not to ask at the Verison store where we bought the phone.

Anyone else been through this? TIA

Idk if this applies to an i-phone (i am not technologically gifted enough to know!) but my husband was able to repair the broken front on both his and my sister's ipod touches. He ordered a kit (maybe off amazon?) for $15 a piece and it was an easy fix. Maybe this is a possibility for the i-phone, too? Hope so, otherwise good luck!

which iphone is it a 3 or 4? I know the 3's were fairly easy to fix, youtube it, not sure about the 4. If its under a year no matter where you buy it (as long as its with a approved retailer) I believe you have a 1 yr warrenty with apple. never hurts to call and see!

I would definitely go to the Apple Store. Odds are you will walk out of there with a new phone! My son's iPhone was damp and they gave him a brand new phone. Set up an appointment and go from there.

I wouldn't pay $149 to repair.

My husband was able to repair his Iphone 3g when it cracked pretty easily. If you are under the warranty, go to Apple.

If my only option was the $149 I would upgrade my 4 to the 4S, AT&T was just offering the upgrade for $199 with contract extension and I've only had this one a year. Then I would sell my cracked one on Ebay, I can't believe the $$ people will pay for used and broken Iphones. That's just what I would do.

Last year I dropped my Iphone and smashed the glass. That is not covered by the warranty regardless, but I went to the store and they changed it out for free. They told me it was a one-time courtesy, as it usually costs $99 to do there, but I guess it was my lucky day!

Definitely go to the apple store and give them your sob story!! If I had to pay the $99 (and definitely the $149), I wouldnt bother, I would just upgrade to the newer version.

My brand new iphone's back glass cracked on its second day! We were actually on our way to get a case for it when it got dropped, lol. So we went straight to Verizon since we had insurance, they were gonna charge us $180 and if I remember right, they weren't even going to fix it, just send me a refurbished phone. So we went to the Apple Store, totally expecting to pay for the repairs but they changed out the glass for free.

If your phone is still under warranty, don't change the glass yourself, it will void it. Or so I've been told.

I just broke the glass on my Ipad2 screen this past weekend. I took it to the Apple store, was very honest, and sorry looking, and they replaced it for free. Try them first, their customer service is awesome.

You guys have been lucky. Apple charged my $199 to exchange mine. I was told it was not covered under apple care and that was my only option. I think it just depends on the associate you get.

Add me to the list of people that went into the Apple store and was totally honest and prepared to pay for the replacement and the guy took mercy on me and gave me a free replacement! It's worth it to try!

DH is a vol fireman; his phone got damp, in the otter box, rescuing people from severe local flooding. He took it out of the case to dry it out overnight. My cats knocked it off the counter and shattered the glass on the front. We called apple and the said to bring it and exchange it for 199. So we drove 1.5 hours to Syracuse and the Apple store gave him a new one free! This just confirmed, for me, why my family owns 4 ipods,3 iphones, and ipad! Go to the store be honest and see!

My battery just went out (a few days after warranty expired) on a 4 from AT&T. They offerred me a refurb replacement for $49 as a new battery would be over $100.

If you go to the Apple store, I do know that it costs $30.00 to replace the back glass cover. Not sure if the front cover is the same price. This is for an iPhone 4S.

Another vote for Ebay if you have an upgrade. I have sold 3 Iphones on Ebay. ALL of them for more than I paid for the new phone with an upgrade. One of those had the front glass broken and again, I got more money than I needed to get a new phone with the upgrade.

The Apple warranty does not cover damage. However, many people have success anyway. If you've got an Apple store nearby, you have nothing to lose.

It sounds like you have an iPhone 4s, so you may not be as lucky as others here. When I bought my 4s they really pushed their Apple Care Plus which would cover accidents. I had an iPhone for 3 years without incident so I didn't pay extra for it. I hope the Apple Store will help you but they might not. Good luck and buy a sturdier case! I'm waiting for a Otterbox Commuter case for my 4s .

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions. We will go by the Apple store this weekend and also check with verizon to see how much it would cost to upgrade if it's too expensive to repair. I'll post back what happens in case anyone is interested! To clarify a couple of posts, it is an I-phone 4 (but not 4S), you do get a 1 year warranty from Apple but it does not cover breakage like this as stated in the original post. Did not have a case on it, have never needed a case with any previous phones, this one cracked at the drop of a hat, IMO. Will be getting a case after this!

Our Apple store's Genius Bar sees people by appointment only. If you walk in, you may take the next available appt but the likelihood of seeing someone right away is small. Especially on a weekend. Make an appointment at the Apple Store right now! I think you can do it online with your Apple ID.
