Crack in foundation

I live in a very old home and the kitchen was an addition at some point in it's history. The other day I noticed one of my upper cabinets looked crooked. The lower cabinet also seems to be pulling away. I went outside to investigate and noticed a crack in the foundation where the addition meets the rest of the house. We've had an incredibly cold winter with lots of snow. Wondering if this may have caused the crack. I know I need to call someone to take a look but just wondering if anyone has experience with this kind of thing? We were actually looking to sell soon but this may hold that up…..:sad1:

Old homes move a lot. Mine is a 1760's colonial so I know movement and crookedness :) But something like this, being recent and causing interior and exterior issues is a big deal. I would get someone in soon, and get more then one opinion.

I would not wait long. Need to get a structural engineer to review what is the issue. I would bring in a contractor asap to possible build a false wall in the basement (if you have one) to stop any firther damage from being done

Definitely get someone in ASAP to look at the foundation but it may not be weather related so I'd also check your yard for sogginess, sunken spots as well, make sure you don't have a sink hole or broken water/sewer/septic pipe or... that is causing the ground to shift. No sense fixing the foundation if the root cause of the shifting still exists as the foundation problems will just reappear and get worse.
