Favreau is the man, going all the way back to his Swingers days. As already mentioned, Spielberg has very little part in the flick other than to add his name. This is Favreau's baby.
I look at Favreau as another Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson in the making ... well without the blood/guts background. He knows how to walk the fine line between camp and cheesy, and can still bring the laughs and drama. Also, he has no problem adapting other forms of literature. Zathura, Iron Man, and Cowboy/Aliens are all adaptations. And C'mon, ELF has to be one of the best X-mas films around!
Seeing him in interviews at ComicCon, it also pretty obvious that he's a giant fanboy at heart. All of this makes makes me think Cowboys and Aliens is definately going to be one to keep tabs on!
