COVID-19 travel contingency plan for Canadian

Our Premier just had a press conference. Seven new cases since Friday. All travel related. They also put NS in State of Emergency. No more than 5 people in a store at one time, not including grocery. He did say only one member per household is to go to the store at any one time. Leave your family home! (us air miles collectors already do that LOL)

Yesterday, social media was slammed with hundreds of people going to our beaches! Premier was sooo pissed. He put on his teacher attitude and chasitized them all. Our new normal:

482742

Also closed our provincial borders to all non-essential travel and anyone entering NS has to self-isolate.

I don't understand why COSTCO is still open if it can only have five people in it at a time? Somethings are so backwards.

Costco is still open as they are a grocery store and a pharmacy.

Well then they will still be slammed with people then as grocery doesn't have that rule.
I doubt it. I work for them and we haven't been busy at all. We limit the amount of people in at one time. I think most are understanding they should stay home. Its the ones that pack beaches or have house parties that are making them put these laws in place

Quebec premier just announced that restaurants must close their dining rooms (take out and deliveries still allowed) and malls must close except for grocery stores, pharmacies and SAQ (booze). But most have an outside entrance anyway. Stores with a private entrance can stay opened if respecting the 2m distance between customers. All assemblies of 10 people or more are banned. Hairdressers and estheticians must close. School is also closed until May 1st and provincial testing cancelled. Now I'm trying to convince DH to buy a second laptop for the kids since I need our family macbook for work when I stay home. I was thinking of getting a Chromebook but he's not fan of the technology and Mac is sooooo expensive! We'll see...

Oh and I just sent my name to offer my services for lab work. Never worked in a clinical lab but I have more than 15 years doing the techniques in an academic lab. We'll see if my help is needed or not.

Well... so much for next year's season of The Curse of Oak Island. Those (American) guys must be frustrated.

I'm not a lover of Chromebook, either. I have Windows machines or Apple handheld devices. But really, what is it the kids will want to do on this new computer? If it's schoolwork, then it might just be using Google Classroom anyway. But if you're thinking this will be a long term purchase with multiple uses, it's probably better to get something that's versitile, if you can afford it.

For example, my oldest (5th grade) is preparing a presentation on gardening because she wants to do a garden this summer so I told her to research what we will need and what to do and make us a proposal. She wants to do a Powerpoint and internet research but her iPad is old and not very suitable for that imo and I'm on the laptop all day. She's also working on writing a novel and would like access to Word to type it. Also, only 1 year left at the elementary school then secondary school (our school system is different than rest of Canada) where more stuff needs to be typed at home but we're not sure if we will need to buy her a computer or not since some private schools ask to buy an iPad and others a laptop. That's why I was thinking of a Chromebook since it's cheap and comes with a keyboard. All our electronic at home are Apple but their machines are NOT cheap!

My son uses a Chromebook, it's what they need for high school as well. I told him to bring it home from school on the last day before March break and am very glad he remembered it! They use the google suite of products for presentations, he did one for me on Covid Thursday, it's like powerpoint but made by google. The schools around here tend to use chromebooks. He also uses Google docs to write documents. He has written a number of stories on it.

I'd check and see what your high schools use and what she will need for that.

Not cheap, for sure, but if that's what you're family is used to, maybe stick with it.

I saw a thing about a new ipad that has a keyboard and can even pair with a mouse. Not sure if its out now or coming out. Anyway, Staples had some 'sales' on ipads. Might be worth a look anyway.

I feel like Costco should definitely have been shut down immediately. Yes, they provide groceries. So do Sobeys and Superstore and other small stores - and any city/town with a Costco, has plenty of other options. For that matter, I'm not a fan of Walmart staying open, either. I understand these stores offer pharmacies - well that's fine, keep the pharmacy open and nothing else. Easy.

I also wish ALL provinces would shut down to non-essential travel. Not sure why they haven't, especially given our national confirmed case load increased by ~40% yesterday. I know Trudeau doesn't want to invoke the WTMA, but I think it's time. Do it NOW, before we're in a bigger mess than we already are.

I know this isn't going to sound good, but people still have to get this virus. Until we either get a vaccine or get 60-70% of the population with immunity, it isn't going to go away and we can't stay in this state forever. We just don't want everyone to get it all at the same time and overload the health care system and we need to protect the vulnerable. So if 60% of our population of 38M needs to get it, we're a long way from being able to get our lives somewhat back to normal. We need the cases to go up, just not too quickly.

I am pretty sure I haven't been exposed but I will admit that every time I sneeze or cough I wonder if I've got it and am going to be in trouble. I do have seasonal allergies and it seems like the time for those is ramping up. I need to go to the store and get more allergy meds, but I don't want to go until I also need to get groceries... and hopefully even that will be later this week. Any way. March break is over so now I get to work from home for at least two weeks... and see if kiddo is still eager for homeschooling as he was last week for a day. I'm going to guess he isn't lol.

Here's a good read that addresses this, and I think gives some good insight into what it's going to look like moving forward - IF we're smart. As you say - it will be a very long time before things are back to normal. I also suspect it will be a very long time until Disney is open again at full capacity - definitely not before a vaccine is available. And, I can see several small "shut downs" unfortunately within that time frame too, as case numbers spike again, especially next winter/spring during regular flu season.

Cases will increase dramatically over the next week or two. That is expected. It’s what happen after that will be important for how long we will be stuck at home. Right now we are NOT trying to prevent all infections like they successfully did for SARS in Toronto, we are stretching when people will get infected so our health system can respond to the demand without being overwhelmed like in Italy and to buy us time to find treatment (many are currently in clinical trials).

For current issues with vaccine development for COVID-19, this article in the prestigious scientific journal Nature is interesting and not too difficult to read (all scientists dream of publishing in Nature):

Fellow allergy sufferer here. Post nasal drip and gunk in the throat are a regular thing for me, that I never thought anything of until Covid - now every flare up freaks me out. Which when you have allergies as well as MAST cell issues, happens a lot, LOL. On Saturday DH had a headache and was EXHAUSTED. Slept on the couch for 3 hours. I was ready to put us all in HAZMAT suits, LOL.

In one more week, I'll start relaxing. We have been 100% isolated since last Monday - we have had no contact with anyone outside the home except for the delivery guy who drops off our groceries, and that's been at a distance. And we wash faithfully after putting all the product away. So, in one more week, we'll have our two-week mark since we've had contact with anyone that could transmit it.

Runny nose and itchy eyes are not symptoms of covid-19. Regular colds caused by covid-19 cousins and allergies are still around!

Vaccines are far from being a given like we don’t have a vaccine against common colds, HIV and even Influenza vaccines are seasonal.
