You know the quote "It all began with a mouse"???

This trip, for 2012, all began when my husband very innocently said one night at dinner, "We're still thinking Disney for 2012, right??"

That was all it took. He should have known better. I planned obsessively for our last 2 trips; I was battling some health issues and needed another focus. Why on earth he didn't assume this trip would be like those is beyond me.

First focus, of course, was the resort.

In the past, we've stayed at the Poly and just adore it!!! The location, the lush plants, the whole atmosphere-- it really does transport you to another place, far from the frentic craziness of the parks. And that waterfall in the volcano pool hits your shoulders right THERE like a massage. Yep, we love the Poly.

But it's hugely expensive. As a family of 5, I know we're going to pay big bucks for a Disney vacation. But the Poly is really expensive.

So I wanted to consider other options.

Fort Wilderness is out. I hate having a kitchen, with the expectation that I'll cook (even a little) while the rest of the family is on vacation. I went camping once and hated it. So cross Fort Wilderness off the list.

Family Suites (either at ASM or the new Art of Animation)??? They sound spacious and lovely. But I HATE the idea of having to take a bus to all the parks, and the pool is just a pool-- I have 3 real water rats who have always raved about the Poly's volcano pool.

POR would be great, except that my son, who will be 14 at the time, is far too big (even now, a year and a half before our trip) for a trundle bed. Any other arrangement would have him sharing a bed with one of his sisters. If you know any teenage boys, you know that simply isn't happening.

The Dolphin's teacher discount would be lovely. Except: no DME, no meal plan, and the biggie: my son would be on a rollaway for a week. We ALL vacation much better when he's well rested. So that was out.

Then I fnally settled on a room in the Garden Wing of the Contemporary. I had last stayed there in 1976, as a new high school graduate. (I went down with 2 friends and we had a wonderful time!) 3 decades later, I remember nothing at all about the resort, but the reports are all good. We can make it work, right???

Except that I kept looking at that pool. It's surrounded by concrete and just looks so incredibly unappealing. Somehow I couldn't get past the idea that we were spending thousands of dollars and still settling.

Until one night about a week and a half ago. My daughter's 11 year old friend was over for dinner, and we were all talking Disney (My husband leaves this week on the Senior Trip.) Kelly started talking about her stay last year at the Beach Club-- how it was "right across the street from Epcot" and about how it "had the most amazing pool (she) had ever seen!!!"

When Disney, or any other company, uses those words, I can't help but wonder. But my daugther's 11 year old friend?? Hmmm, might be worth a look.

And I'm hooked. Better yet, I showed my kids the MAP of Storm Along Bay, and my daughter kept saying "Mom, I can't believe the pool has a MAP!!!" The idea that we can walk home after Illuminations, and take a boat to DHS has every one of my kids doing the happy dance. And it's still about $300 less than the Poly for a week.

I've spent over an entire week excited about our (that means "my") resort choice-- a record for that particular decision.

I've enlisted 2 sets of friends who have been talking about going "one of these days." We're all planning together for Summer 2012, though we don't plan a group vacation. But I'll have someone to obsess to, and someone else on the lookout for codes and bargains.

We'll book in August, when the new prices come out. I always use a travel agent. At this point, I could definitely do it myself. But in this economy-- or any economy-- I can't see denying someone the chance to earn a commission when doing so also makes it a bit easier for me. And an extra pair of eyes looking for discounts can't hurt!

COngrats on your planning and decision for BEach Club!!!! Everyone I know that's ever been there LOVES it! Doin't hte happy dance for you!

We went to FW Cabins last April and now I too have the planning bug...I've been looking for ideas and "obsessing" This is a great place to obsess for the Disney addicted - no one else understands. I would like to go back in January 2012 or 2013.

I still cannot understand how to do the trip under $4500 with a family of 5 and airfare. Yes I know there are Value resorts-but that's just not me. And Cabins weren't mine thing either. I've looked into off-site and renting DVC points too. It all comes to around $4000 (all inclusive). If you have any tips, please pass them on. As I will pass on any new I have to you.

BEst of luck planning!

Well, for starters, I'll go with the AAA discount-- that will take off 10-20% (I forget which for summer) from the price of the resort.

You could do POR-- it's supposed to be gorgeous! And your kids are small enough that the trundle bed would be perfect.

Oh, and you could always skip the meal plan (though that's not a sacrifice I'm willing to make; I'll do extra freelance work on the side between now and then, but I want the meal plan!) Ordering from www.gardengrocer.com will help save money on breakfasts and snacks in the park.

And every single occasion (birthday, anniversary, Easter, Christmas...) from now till August 2012 will include gift cards from the Disney Store.

$4500 might be pushing it; my last two trips were closer to $5000. (And that was thanks to a 40% pin one year, and the 4/3 deal the next.) So I'm afraid that this trip may be closer to $6000 with airfare; we'll see how the number look next winter.

So.....

For the past few trips we've always worked with the AAA travel agent. I'm not dummy; I'm not paying rack rate for a room if there's a discount within easy reach.

And it was fine. Really.

Of course, I did have to explain to him what my PIN code meant (it was 40% that first year!!!) but once he cut through my hysteria at saving that kind of money he took care of it. And when I faxed him a message about the soon-to-arrive Tropical Storm Faye, he got back to me on how the insurance worked and what to do.

But I always felt like I knew more than the travel agents I had. (And we had mutliple ones--they must have just had a rough couple of years and our account bounced a few times to someone new.)

So this trip I decided to use a Disney Certified Travel agent.

I sent emails to 15 places last week, and got 10 responses. I narrowed it down to my top 3. Then I asked my 11 year old daughter, and my sister, which one they would pick. Both agreed with the one I was thinking of. So I emailed her and we have a travel agent.

As to the AAA discount: she very wisely pointed out that Disney is ALWAYS running (at least during the time period we tend to go) a special which beats the AAA discount anyway. And I checked on mousesavers; sure enough, she was right.

I wont' book until the rates come out in August, but I'm happy with my choice.

Joining in, how exciting, I would love to stay at at Epcot area resort and SAB someday, in a few years when the kids are a bit older. I would be too nervous with them at that pool right now. Perfect for your kids though.

I love that you are using a travel agent even though you probably don't really need one. I worked in the travel biz and it bothers me when people think they will pay more going through an agent. They don't realize the commission is paid by the destination not the customer. Yes they charge fees for booking airfare a lot of time now, but that's because the airlines stopped paying commissions to them and it's a lot of work dealing with flights.

Even if I didn't think it would benefit me personally, I would use a travel agent.

We're fortunate to both have jobs in this economy. We can find the money to go to Disney World. The very least I can do is pay it forward and give someone else the chance to earn a commission off my trip.

I'll be watching your thread...We're considering going next year but I have no idea where to start...

Jaylensmom, you can be my new best friend!

I get a real kick out of all the Disney planning. A few years ago I was facing some serious health issues. I spent lots of nights wide awake, unable to sleep. (After a while, you can only watch Three's Company so many times before you run from the room screaming.) So I would sit at the computer. It became a choice between researching Breast Cancer or researching Disney, so researching Disney became my new hobby.

Tell us who is going, about when you're thinking of going, and let us throw some options at you.

Joining in for all of the planning fun!
I've already started planning for summer 2012 even though our summer 2011 vacation hasn't started. :rotfl:
The Beach Club and Stormalong Bay are fantastic! You will LOVE it.
I was at the YC for a long weekend in November and fell in love with the Epcot resort area. If you have any questions, I may be able to help. :goodvibes
